New Topic Idea: Unsolved Mysteries

Mimmy352 · 03/09/2023 19:48

Hello! I’ve been advised to post this here, but given the popularity of my unsolved mysteries thread, I figured it might be a good Topic to add to Mumsnet.

The overall “goal” would be to discuss the unsolved crimes, disappearances, and other mysterious happenings in the world. There is potential that these threads could raise awareness for certain cases, but I would hope everyone remembers that these threads would be for discussion purposes only.

What would everyone think? Is it something you’d like to see?

What’s the scariest unsolved mystery you know? | Mumsnet

Whether it’s personal or well known, which unsolved case makes your brain sound like dial up?

I hadn't seen the original thread so thanks for pointing me there and giving me my evening mumsnet read 😀 I love a good mystery so would be a topic I'd certainly be interested in.

Evening and tomorrow morning more like! There’s some cases in that thread I’ve never heard of, and I’d consider myself a mystery master!! It’s fascinating stuff, though your search history might look a bit suspicious by the end of it 😂😂

Yes please! I love a good mystery.

SemperIdem · 03/09/2023 20:03

I would like to see it.

I think particularly with missing persons cases, it’s important they’re remembered and talked about, these kinds of cases can be solved most unexpectedly even after a long time has passed.

The Somerton Man and The Boy in the Box cases have both been solved this year after many decades of being cold cases!

My thoughts too! Maybe it’s a little fanciful to think a thread here might crack open a cold case, but what’s the harm in discussing them? At the very least, memories of people are not being left behind.

One case mentioned on my original thread was of an international student going missing. His parents tried to raise awareness but his father passed and his mother ran out of money, and had to return to their home country without answers. If it were me, the idea of just one person remembering my child and acknowledging that he lived, he mattered, would go a long way

Yes, really important to keep alive the missing persons cases.

samuelclemens · 03/09/2023 20:12

yes please

Alycidon · 03/09/2023 20:21

Yes - I would 'follow' this topic.

TheDogMama · 03/09/2023 20:26

I don’t think it’s a good idea. Look at the Nicola Bulley threads and similar. Some of the posters were awful. They talked like it was a film on Netflix. Comments like ‘plot twist’ and emojis like ‘👀’ posted when certain things were said. And the cases like Madeleine McCann that gave to be deleted because of wild speculation.

As someone who knows a family involved in a widely reported case, it can be very difficult for the victims families to read this sort of speculation with posters treating it like a hobby online.

Mumsnet is meant to be a place of support. There are other places for people whose hobby is true crime.

Evening, all. We'll keep reading and taking a note on views on this thread. As we always say, we're usually happy to give consideration to new topics that sound reasonable but we need to know that there will be enough interest in them and get an idea of how the topic will work. So do let us know your thoughts and we'll keep one eye on this thread.

DancingLedgend · 03/09/2023 20:34

Completely agree with @TheDogMama

I think it's ghoulish.

And would be appalling for families of the disappeared/ unsolved murders.

And would be hard to curb speculation that could potentially prejudice a trial.

jellytotsparkles · 03/09/2023 20:38

Hello! Yes! I think it should become a topic as per my suggestion in the early hours of this morning on the original thread. I did also mention that keeping these cases in the public eye & awareness can help to sometimes jog somebody’s memory about events that may have seemed insignificant at the time. Occasionally there are things people know & recall that they may not link to a case until they notice it being spoken about. So all in all, I support the idea of this becoming a topic on the Mumsnet chat boards if possible :)

TheDogMama · 03/09/2023 20:41

I think it's ghoulish.

Yes, that's the word. I don’t believe for a second it’s about remembering the person. It’s wannabe detectives and ghouls for the most part.

I’ll be disgusted but sadly not surprised if mumsnet allow it.

MarilynBoo · 03/09/2023 20:44

Yes please, I'd find this topic very interesting.

As I stated in my initial post, the intention would be for this to be discussion only. Not for wannabe sleuths to bust out their deerstalker hats and magnifying glasses. The majority of people commenting on the initial thread were all very respectful, only giving their own ideas and feelings about the cases.

I'd be really interested in this. Think it would have to be heavily moderated given you'll have some idiots trying to suggest Lucy Letby is innocent and derail threads with their fanciful assertions. If the thread topic stays true to what the OP intends it to be then it would be brilliant and so interesting.

SecretVictoria · 03/09/2023 20:53

Yes!

You’re naive if you think that won’t happen. Mumsnet have deleted lots of posts of entire threads on current and historic cases due to things posted.

As I said earlier, it’s often not welcome by families and adds another layer of shit for them to deal with.

Mumsnet shouldn’t be about this imo.
