How many dinner plates do you have?

Very lighthearted post -

We are a family of 3 and have 5 dinner plates (just moved - this is what survived the move).
We don’t have any ‘posh dinner plates’ either.

I’m looking at dinner sets and trying to work out what we need.

How many people live in your house and how many dinner plates do you have?

We have about 10 currently with 4 in the family. I recently got rid of another stack as I never used them. These are all everyday plates, no fancy china.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 02/09/2023 15:20

16!

Family of 3. We have a set of six that I have had for 30+ years! And a set of 4 that DH got from somewhere. We tend to use those ones regularly. Then we have 6 "posh" ones that are part of a bigger dinner set that only comes out on special occasions.

Far more than we need tbh!

Batatahara · 02/09/2023 15:21

4 of us, we have 12 dinner plates readily accessible, and another 12 stored away for when we have lots of people round or to stay.

12 feels about right to us given that we use the dishwasher for everything.

Family of 3 - have 12 everyday Denby + a dinner set of 8

ShinyBandana · 02/09/2023 15:27

Family of 4 - we’ve got about 14 everyday dinner plates, plus 8 in the fancy set (wedding present) and 6 in a mid-level-fancy set. We’ve also got about 50 ikea plates that come out when we’re having a party.

I’ve never thought about this before but that’s a lot of plates, isn’t it??☺️

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 02/09/2023 15:27

9 for 4 of us. I'm not sure how it ended up at 9! If we're entertaining more, the kids will use side plates. All the plates and bowls are plain white so it's easy to add some if there are breakages.

We do also have an 8 person set of white with tiny gold stars that gets used every day in December.

Poblano · 02/09/2023 15:30

Family of 5. We have 8 dinner plates in the everyday set, 4 in the 'posh' set that were a wedding present. The set of 4 has had very little use as we had 3 DC, but now 2 are away at university I could actually use it again.

ChristmasFluff · 02/09/2023 15:31

Just me. 6 posh plates. 8 everyday plates- random and unmatching survivors of various daily-use plate sets. I mostly eat out of bowls anyway, and I have 6 big bowls (pasta type) and 5 small bowls (cereal bowl size). Plus 6 posh bowls that match the posh plates.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 02/09/2023 15:31

1 person, 3 plates, none match!

DisforDarkChocolate · 02/09/2023 15:32

Three people. 21 dinner plates.

I shall admit to last year's pre-Christmas Dinner panic buy being 2 dinner sets in plain white from John Lewis. Every year I do something equally stupid.

TodayForTomorrow · 02/09/2023 15:33

We've got 4. I recently bought a set after deciding to get rid of the mismatched stuff DH and I had both had since our uni days.

KingscoteStaff · 02/09/2023 15:34

Family of 4, but with a LOT of visitors.

8 of everything everyday set - Bridgewater
12 of everything posh wedding present set - Wedgewood. Only used for dinner parties and special occasions. Lives in very top cupboard.

Nikee20 · 02/09/2023 15:34

Wow, I’d say I’d better get shopping!

Now, which plates to buy!!

@UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername I like the sound of the star plates!

5 in the everyday kitchen set, and twelve in the 'lunch party' set.

I have a big family. If they all come I use all of them, and still need to borrow more.

greenspaces4peace · 02/09/2023 15:35

Retired couple, 8 place setting Denby. several pieces of Lambethware which have survived 3 kids and 40+ yrs. A few speciality bits and bobs; onion soup bowls, asian inspired etc.

ForthegracegoI · 02/09/2023 15:35

11 Denby that I consider a little bit fancy but we use them every day. I don’t keep anything for good: I love my Denby blue set, it makes me smile every time I get them out. I don’t have any others. I’ve got 11 because 1 got chipped and DZh bought me a replacement 🤷‍♀️

family of 4.

my mum has about a million for her and my dad - 6 every day ones, a full Denby set for good plus several half sets inherited from older relatives.

BaronessBomburst · 02/09/2023 15:35

A quick count, about 27 but I didn't check the dishwasher.
I also have fish plates and breakfast plates, which would do at a push.
We are a family of three. Blush

spanieleyes · 02/09/2023 15:37

Just me!

I have 12 day to day plates - same of bowls and side plates
I have a full 12 piece " second set" that's plates, side plates, bowls, cups and saucers
And then I have a similar sized " best set" that I don't use very often as it can't go in the dishwasher but is too nice to get rid of!

I think I have too many!

allthehops · 02/09/2023 15:37

Only two of us now but we have about 12 (often have that many people here at Christmas etc)

RadishAndTwiglet · 02/09/2023 15:38

Far, far too many. Having excessive crockery, glassware and kitchen/dining stuff in general is my toxic trait. I'd guess I own at least 70 plates (kept in two different houses) of a size and type you'd serve a main course on.

And let's not even discuss all the other shapes and sizes.

BCBird · 02/09/2023 15:40

Household of 1. About 8 in total. One is 30 plus years old- smoked glass reminiscent of the 70s🙈no posh ones

PollyThePixie · 02/09/2023 15:40

Loads.

A Villeroy and Bosch 12 place setting dinner service plus tea and coffee set.

A good 12 place set for when the dinner service would be too much.

A 24 place set for in the garden. Its very cheerful Mediterranean type colours.

An everyday 12 place settings that was just 3 boxes of a 4 place settings

Another set like the one above but with different shaped bowls.

We’re a big family when all together, which is often, and I love a nicely set table regardless of what meal of the day we’re having.

I also have a thing about beautiful comfy beds and lots of nice towels

NonMiDispiace · 02/09/2023 15:40

Just two of us here; 12 of each plate/dish because when the family come I use them. I think it was two 6 place settings I bought 25 years ago, a few pudding bowls have be replaced.

BarbieKew · 02/09/2023 15:41

We currently have 6 or 7 everyday plates (a couple are chipped) and 12 nice plates for when we have people over.

I need new bowls, not happy with any of them really.

blueshoes · 02/09/2023 15:42

Family of 3-4 (dd now in student accommodation). 15 dinner plates, broke a few along the way. So we stick to white as they are easily replaceable.

Having had children's parties before, we still have the plastic (non-disposable kind) plates. So they are emergency backup if we have tons of guests or need serving plates for canapes etc. Not very posh, we are Grin
