How many dinner plates do you have?

Very lighthearted post -

We are a family of 3 and have 5 dinner plates (just moved - this is what survived the move).
We don’t have any ‘posh dinner plates’ either.

I’m looking at dinner sets and trying to work out what we need.

How many people live in your house and how many dinner plates do you have?

Eight and there are two of us. I'm not sure why we have so many!

Maddy70 · 02/09/2023 16:57

We have about 12 but we do have big parties

User13865890 · 02/09/2023 17:03

Retired couple, 6 Denby regency green dinner plates and about 16 plates in next size down of Denby, M&S and Emma Bridgewater. Our main dinner set is the Denby .

11 (used to be 12) day to day dinner plates, then 10 fancier ones that are slightly larger, so get used for guests or when we have a bigger meal or one where you might need space for a bowl etc, eg moule frites. 6 pasta bowls that seem to get more use than the rest!
Our table seats 8 comfortably 10 at a squeeze.
2 adults, 1 dc.
Don't ask me about bowls, cups or glasses. I have a problem.

UndercoverCop · 02/09/2023 17:10

Oh and cake plates, tea plates, side plates, and DH commented on the 5 teapots a few weeks ago.....

User13865890 · 02/09/2023 17:10

Actually reading this makes me feel a bit better about my approximately 40 mugs, a mixture of Dunoon, Emma Bridgewater for different seasons and M&S

Gowlett · 02/09/2023 17:13

Five dinner plates. 3 of us here.
Five side plates for sandwiches / snacks.
Also have a China set with four dinner plates.

IHeartGeneHunt · 02/09/2023 17:21

Two of us and four of everything. We only use the bowls and side plates because the dinner plates are massive!

Thingsthatgo · 02/09/2023 17:28

I am surprised how few plates people have! We have 12 dinner plates (just plain white), but when we are all at home we often use 12 each day. (4 of us - one each for breakfast, lunch and dinner). I was considering buying more Blush

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 02/09/2023 17:35

8 John Lewis basics in both sizes , plus bowls snd pasta bowls.

A separate dinner set of off white Gordon Ramsey ones , which we use for special occasions, and which I supervise the dishwasher stacking/unloading!

ResponsibleWalrus · 02/09/2023 18:12

4 dinner plates with 2 of us at home. We're planning to buy 4 more. There are days when the dishwasher isn't full but we run it anyway because we've run out of plates.

A lot.

Bought the IKEA cheap white glass range less than £1 each, food stays piping hot, don't take up much room, fit in the dishwasher well.

Ditched my expensive pain in the arse easy to chip Denby Angry

I love my Denby and have never found that it chipped easily, and I've had it for more than 30 years.

Their customer service is really good too. I bought some bowls recently and one chipped another in the dishwasher. They replaced it without quibble.

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 02/09/2023 18:17

I have Denby Halo, but only one piece of each thing as there's only me.

8 Denby Greenwich here, got an 8 piece set for wedding presents (didn't need anything so parents got everyone organised, they are the most used items we ever had). That was 24 years ago in 2 weeks time.still have them all, no chips.

Mine's Denby Greenwich too, and I took things as far as to get my wall tiles in my kitchen specially fired to match my Denby. It took 3 goes before they were the right shade...

Used to be a shop near us that sold Denby with about a third off (going back to when we were first married, so 33 years + ago!). I bought a few pieces each month. They don't even make the half of the stuff I have any more!!

So, butter dish, 2 different shapes salt and pepper, large salad bowl, 2 smaller salad bowls, vegetable tureen, assorted oven to tableware, some with lids, some large, some small. Teapot, coffee pot, cake stand, jar I store teabags in, large jug, sugar bowl and covered sugar bowl, milk jug, large serving platter, eggcups, teacups and saucers. Dinner plates, side plates, tea plates, pasta bowls, ramen bowls, and 2 different sizes shallow bowls. Think that's all lol!!

I had a couple of chipped plates and some were showing a bit of wear and tear, so I bought new ones with Tesco Clubcard vouchers (when they were still x 3).

Someone mentioned bowls upthread - these are the most brilliant bowls and they're done in other colours too:

They're a really great size and they get used for everything food!

I have too much stuff, I think... I have 6 canteens of cutlery!!!

Family of 3-6 depending on who is away at university. I think we have 10 everyday IKEA ones at the moment and 6 'special' ones that only get used for occasions.

We aim to have 12 of everything (dinner, side, bowls etc) so need to stock up when I next go to IKEA. I like having relatively cheap ones for everyday use because then it's affordable to have plenty of them and it's no big deal if one gets broken. IKEA is good because they tend to keep their range for years so again no bother to replace.

Lulu1919 · 02/09/2023 18:27

Two of use ....8 of everything
Plus a special set of 12 of everything...33 year old wedding gift !!

SuperiorM · 02/09/2023 18:32

Set of 6 posh ones, 6 others in a design that matches and 2 odd dinner sized plates. The odd ones get used when food prepping, putting seasonings in steak etc. or when there is a need for a central plate, sharing cheese, pud for guests that gets divided.

Ceraunophile · 02/09/2023 18:36

16 dinner plates
Abut 20 side plates (that the dc actually use as dinner plates as well as being toast or sandwich plates)
About 24 small plates that are used for a single slice of toast, cake, puddings etc

6 in the family but we do host a fair bit. Often run out of side plate size if we have guests

Nikee20 · 02/09/2023 18:38

Denby is pricey.

Rocknrollstar · 02/09/2023 18:38

DH is clearly right - I do have a problem. We have 12 white ones in the kitchen and about 70 (2 or 3 different sizes) in a set I’ve been collecting for years and buy in charity shops.

MillWood85 · 02/09/2023 18:43

Just me and DH here most of the time but we've got a lot of kids and grandkids so I've got a full set of 18 (Denby coupe style but in differing colours so not matchy matchy). And I still end up washing/drying the buggers on Christmas day as we invariably run out....

I'm just not sure where I can store more as they're incredibly heavy when stacked.

Denby is pricey.

I bought mine in the sale a few years ago, a lot of people buy it with Tesco Clubcard points, I wouldn't pay full price.

Lagershandy · 02/09/2023 18:58

Two of us, 4 of everything in Denby Linen, I love it Denby is bomb proof.
I did have big Royal Albert dinner service, (I used to work in a lovely shop that sold fine china) but hardly used it so in a declutter I gave it to our local charity shop.

Sgtmajormummy · 02/09/2023 19:01

OP if you’re looking for inspiration, this is my place to look at good quality plates. The prices are about the lowest around.
