How many dinner plates do you have?

Very lighthearted post -

We are a family of 3 and have 5 dinner plates (just moved - this is what survived the move).
We don’t have any ‘posh dinner plates’ either.

I’m looking at dinner sets and trying to work out what we need.

How many people live in your house and how many dinner plates do you have?

8 for a family of 4.

BaaCode · 02/09/2023 15:44

Sixteen for two of us.
They are two separate dinner services, my daily and my posh one.
In my defence, I've had them years and the posh one only comes out at Christmas and Easter.

Splodgerbodgerbadger · 02/09/2023 15:44

3 of us we have 8 large plates and 8 side plates, we do have a spare set now as I got our current ones for my 50th birthday a Denby set that I’ve wanted for years.

A lot.

Bought the IKEA cheap white glass range less than £1 each, food stays piping hot, don't take up much room, fit in the dishwasher well.

Ditched my expensive pain in the arse easy to chip Denby Angry

Cheeesus · 02/09/2023 15:46

We have about 12 for a family of five. They are bright, multicoloured and deliberately mismatched.

Ted10 · 02/09/2023 15:46

5 of is at home. Have 12 dinner plates , 1 side plate, 4 pasta bowls. 2 cerel bowls. 10 teaspoons, 2 spoons, 3 knifes , 8 forks.

SpacePotato · 02/09/2023 15:47

Three people. 21 dinner plates

Wow. Do you host a lot? I don't have that much cupboard space!

4 people. 4 plates, 4 large pasta dishes we probably use more than the plates.
The DC's mostly use the small side plates though.
We don't do any hosting though.

HippeePrincess · 02/09/2023 15:47

I had to buy 2 sets of 4 for when we had people for dinner a while back and I then got rid of the mish mash from previous sets. A few years on we’re down to 7 big plates, 4 pasta bowls, 6 cereal bowls and side plates. Stupidly didn’t get something generic or unlikely to be discontinued so I can’t just buy more/the odd ones. We’ll probably just use these till we get a new kitchen or we break too many more. I might relent and get more pasta bowls as we like to eat most of our meals out of them.
we’re a family of 5, though ones a baby.

My husband worries the cupboard will fall off the wall.

Little does he know my quest for Christmas themed crockery continues.

Family of 4 adults and we have 8 new dinner plates.

I'm not counting the old set which is currently waiting to go in the loft because I really did love it but too many of the plates are chipped now. Can't bear to part with it, because I bought each plate and bowl one at a time each week from Woolworths. I was really strapped for cash at the time, and that once a week purchase was all I could afford.

OldTinHat · 02/09/2023 15:58

About 14 odd. Just me!

BeyondMyWits · 02/09/2023 16:04

8 Denby Greenwich here, got an 8 piece set for wedding presents (didn't need anything so parents got everyone organised, they are the most used items we ever had). That was 24 years ago in 2 weeks time.still have them all, no chips.

Winnading · 02/09/2023 16:04

A few years ago I got well and truly pissed off with the mismatched, chipped crockery. I got rid of it all. I bought a set of 4 of everything in plain white.
So I thought this was all I had. I've been to the crockery cupboard to find a whole other set on the very top shelf. No idea where its come from. It looks like something 70s or early 80s maybe? Will have to ask the only other person that lives with me if he knows where its come from.

  1. We are a family of 3.
isthismylifenow · 02/09/2023 16:10

About 20 every day plates. They are ancient from a set I got as a gift when moving into my own home over 30 years ago. As people knew I had that set they gave me their odds and ends in case I was missing any.

Then I have a full posh Noritake set which I got for my 21st which comes out on special occasions.

Then I have my entertaining set. We do a fair bit of outdoor eating, so this is a different set as I can not do paper plates or plastic plates. And I don't really want to start the discussion of my ancient plates coming up. (ie, oh god I remember eating off of these as a kid etc etc)

Similar with cutlery.

I realise I have too many, but the bonus is, if I forget to switch on the dishwasher, it is no big deal😄

It's just me and ds in the house now. He does seem to pile them up in his room, when the pile in the cupboard is looking a bit thin, he will be reminded to clean up his tip.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 02/09/2023 16:12

8 in the drawer, same again in the loft. Nowt fancy - IKEA and habitat

DinnaeFashYersel · 02/09/2023 16:13

4 in our house.

Posh set has 8 of everything but when I buy everyday dishes I buy 6 of everything

Oh I get this. I am sentimental with things as well. I find it hard to get rid of things that have a such a history. Hence my vast collection too 😄

slavetothekittens · 02/09/2023 16:17

About 12, a mish mash of patterns and colours, probably two actually match. Plus about 8 side plates, nothing matching.

Sgtmajormummy · 02/09/2023 16:22

Three of us in this house. 2 sets of 6 place settings (so 36 plates plus glasses, serving dishes, cups) and we use them all. The dishwasher is a deciding factor and it’s the soup/pasta plates that run out first. If I was buying for a new house I’d probably buy double the amount of soup/pasta plates to side and dinner plates.

Hedjwitch · 02/09/2023 16:24

4 of us. 6 plates. No fancy set

A bone China set of six and then six heavy duty pottery ones plus two plates that were DH granny’s.

Phos · 02/09/2023 16:42

6 old red Argos ones we got in a set when we first moved in together. Couple are a bit chipped but they’re ok for everyday use.

6 slightly nicer ones from John Lewis but still everyday type ones.

Then we have a “best” set of 6 which if I’m honest I’m not sure where we got them from.

We also have 3 random ones not as part of a
set that have been bought for various reasons. DD tends to use those.

RichieMcAl · 02/09/2023 16:43

We have enough to cater for us + parents/siblings/off spring so if we invite family to dinner we have enough plates to feed everyone.
