How many dinner plates do you have?

Very lighthearted post -

We are a family of 3 and have 5 dinner plates (just moved - this is what survived the move).
We don’t have any ‘posh dinner plates’ either.

I’m looking at dinner sets and trying to work out what we need.

How many people live in your house and how many dinner plates do you have?

Family of two. Two big dinner plates, three smaller (1950s?) dinner plates.

mandymion · 02/09/2023 19:04

Family of 2, with sometimes 3. I think 8 at the moment. Dishwasher requirement to have more than I need though. I like having enough plates.

PatsWoggle · 02/09/2023 19:20

Family of 6, 25 large and 15 smaller every day ones, only 9 side plates.

Those of you with tons of crockery. Where on earth do you keep it all?

Maharajah20 · 02/09/2023 19:37

Ok. I've just gone and counted
12 every day plain white dinner plates
12 mis matched plates for giving dinner to friends/family so if they don't come back it's not a problem
24 posh plates that are part of a complete dinner set and do get used very regularly.
12 Christmas plates, also part of a larger dinner set, that get used all of December
Also 15 smaller every day dinner plates that are in the back of the cupboard that are great for breakfast or kids.

I have just realised I have a LOT of plates....in my defence there are about 20 of us for dinner next Sunday so the posh plates will be out!

I also have matching bowls and tea plates for most sets as well 🤷‍♀️
And the posh set and Christmas I have serving bowls, serving plates, tureens etc! 🤷‍♀️

Our house has a separate dining room and the excess plates and many mugs, some are seasonal like the Bridgwater Christmas and Halloween ones are kept in a dresser sideboard thingy in there. We only keep ones mainly what we are using in the kitchen as it is quite a small kitchen diner with small table, dining room is used for Christmas and stuff

Family of 4 and we have about 12 everyday plates and another 20 or so for when we have a houseful.

We eat out of bowls a lot, so have many of those wide-rimmed type ones.

We got married in the late 90s when choosing a dinner service for your list was still a 'thing'. We still have most of this in a cupboard and it gets wheeled out when we need back-up. Thankfully, we went for white, so it is not dated.

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/09/2023 19:46

Twelve. Family of 4.

Housefullofcatsandkids · 02/09/2023 19:48

We are a family of 6, I have four dinner plates and two kids' plates for the younger children. I do own extras at the back of the cupboard in case we have people over.

ToxicPositivity · 02/09/2023 19:51

We have 20. Family of 6. Add in my parents, brothers family and we need a million. We still have our old 12 in a cupboard just incase.

percypal · 02/09/2023 20:01

There are four of us and we have four! We never entertain, have a very small kitchen and no dishwasher so this is what works for us. When we’ve had more they just ended up piling up waiting to be washed.

TheFireflies · 02/09/2023 20:07

There’s only two of us. We have far too many plates.

23 dinner plates.
18 dessert plates.
18 side plates.
12 small bowls.
4 medium pasta dishes
4 large pasta dishes

Gobimanchurian · 02/09/2023 20:42

Family of 5. We have 3 sets, which were all originally 8's. Oldest only has 5 left, another has 7. We use these constantly, dishwasher goes on every other day ish.

The newest 8 were bought for Christmas/when we have visitors, only used a handful of times a year.

Side plates and different size bowls we have more of, they get used a lot.

EeesandWhizz · 02/09/2023 21:03

4 of us (with a dishwasher, I think it makes a difference).

12 everyday dinner plates, 12 Wedgewood dinner plates, about 20 cheap IKEA glass plates. Everything is white, and has a corresponding side plate and bowl. Also soup and desert bowls in the Wedgewood.

We're a family of 4 and have 12 large dinner plates, 12 medium sized plates and 12 side plates (part of a set). They just stack in our kitchen cupboards. If I had 3 of each they'd take up the same space on each shelf, I just stack them taller.

Then I have 6 plates from an old set that I just keep in another cupboard in the kitchen but very rarely use so the mixing bowls/colander etc are on top of them. I only dig those out once or twice a year when we have a lot of people over for parties.

KohlaParasaurus · 02/09/2023 21:45

We have 27. 13 all in the same design, which is gold-rimmed and not suitable for the microwave. A set of 4 and a separate pair of white ones which I bought for using in the microwave. 6 in Minton Haddon Hall that I couldn't resist on Marketplace. And two that I think DD3 must have left in the cupboard the last time she boomeranged. There are two of us at home.

Don't ask about bowls in various shapes and sizes. I am like a magpie.

foolishone · 02/09/2023 21:46

8 every day plates, bowls, side plates.
Then I think 8 nice plates etc which were a wedding gift.

Two of us. I like to have plenty for guests.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 02/09/2023 21:51

4 of everything, it's just me and a 3 year old (who doesn't eat), I don't have room to store more than I have.

Turquoisa80 · 02/09/2023 21:53

8 dinner plates, 7 side plates and 5 bowlsl which is for 4 of us. Nothing matches

geoger · 02/09/2023 23:22

Family of 4 - 48 dinner plates. We have an enormous extended family and lots of friends and host loads eg Christmas dinner there are minimum 24 of us. I brought 4 sets of 12 plates and the same number of side plates in plain white from John Lewis. For some reason I have less bowls. We’ve also got loads of serving bowls and platters.

Champagneforeveryone · 02/09/2023 23:25

Family of 2 - 3 (DS away at uni) I've just had a purge and bought a beautiful set of Denby in a dark blue. Currently only have 4 settings as that alone set me back over £200 😖

They're utterly beautiful and I'm able to buy individual pieces if one breaks so practically future-proof. I've told myself they're an investment, just to make me feel slightly better 😆
