Does anyone else listen to music from back in the day

When you were young, with no responsibilities and life wasn't totally shit?

I'm working my way through YouTube live Marillion concerts from the 1980s and marvelling that I can remember most of the words when I forgot 2 of the 5 things I needed in Tesco earlier 😂

Anyone want to share their 'I was young and happy once' tunes?

Me. I listen to Sounds of the 80s and others that play pre 21st century music.

Like you, I know every single word to "Heaven is a place on Earth", yet sometimes I enter a room to get something and forget what for.

My favourite band when I was 15 is still my favourite band. Every time I listen to them I melt away back into an early 2000s carefree life. It's actually my biggest stress release, I'll be 80 still rocking out to that band 😁

Great to find another fan, few people seem to know them. I saw them live a few times, firstly in 1983. It's only the Fish era for me though - I just couldn't feel it after he left.

Love listening to golden oldies!

TheAloe · 31/08/2023 21:04

I’m 35. I went the gym today and listened to my Sean Paul album from back in the day. Minus the cider and park bench this time 🤣. Some brilliant times indeed.

WetsuitRevolutionary · 31/08/2023 21:16

I found smog at the end of my rainbow...

Picklemeyellow · 31/08/2023 21:18

I listen to 80’s music all the time on YouTube and Greatest Hits Radio, it brings back so many happy, contented memories.
After watching the Wham! documentary I found the Wham! Make It Big album again.
I was 11 when it was first released and would listen to it over and over, on my Walkman.
I replayed that album last week, there were 3 fairly unknown songs on that album (If you were there, Like a Baby and Credit Card Baby).
I haven’t listened to that album in almost 40 years yet my brain recalled every single word of those songs. Amazing seeing that I can’t even recall my own name some days (thanks perimenopause!).

‘If you were there’ , was my absolute favourite.

Stripeypyjamas · 31/08/2023 21:20

I only really listen to Heart 90s radio. Alicias attic, ace of base, eternal, blur, pulp, no doubt. Love it all!

I did exactly the same after watching the documentary and as soon as the opening chords of Heartbeat played I was transported right back! I haven't actually heard that song for probably 30 years or so, yet I still knew every word. Make it Big and Nik Kershaw's The Riddle were my first two records Smile

Listening to Gold on radio or online I often hear a song I wasn't into and find myself liking it - even if I still think it was a bit cheesy or whatever? Perhaps I was a bit of a snob back in the day !

LubaLuca · 31/08/2023 21:29

I listen to Pulp a lot. It takes me back to two times in my life when I've been genuinely very happy.

Regularly.

In my car the radio cycles through the channels whilst I get annoyed by each presenter/rubbish music or over to Bluetooth and my ever growing playlist

It switches from oldies to recents and also sometimes recommendations are let in

I’ll suddenly think of a tune and that plus a combination of the groups other tunes and covers will be added.
For a while I’ll aim for those that I listened to of an era, and discard the so called classics / charts of that time but at other times they become listenable (not for the tunes themselves but the nostalgia value of a time or a friend)

Thanks to this thread Kayleigh has just jumped back on to the playlist and curiously the word Marillion triggered a chain of links to Marillion - scottish - man on mountain with claymore, which with a quick google has brought me to what appeared to be the wrong result of a Scottish MPs campaign but turns out to be the right Jessie Rae with “over the sea”

I won’t be adding that to the playlist but it was a nostalgia moment

ginghamstarfish · 31/08/2023 21:31

Yes, I still have cassettes and cds of my old favourites.

greengreengrass25 · 31/08/2023 21:34

Definitely

Loving Spotify and also R2 POTP on Saturdays

“Heaven is a place on earth” gives mixed emotions.
A very close friend that’s no longer here was a major fan.

I will thank you for the happy side of the sad memories. This week is the anniversary of me having to break into their flat.

I have what was supposed to be a secret habit of disappearing to get away from everyone and blanking it at this time of year, but everyone worked that one out in no time

With the event I like to disappear to not being on this year a friend dropped heavy hints about getting me out somewhere ‘near the end of the week’

I’m now having a little private session of Belinda Carlisle with a smile and a tear

A genuine thank you

NooNakedJacuzziness · 31/08/2023 21:39

@Picklemeyellow - that brings back some memories! "You can have my credit card baby but keep your red hot fingers off of my heart lady" - banger!

RocketIceLollie · 31/08/2023 21:39

I still listen to my late 90s ministry of sound compilation CDs, and yes I still use a cd player 😆

It's literally all I listen to

FictionalCharacter · 31/08/2023 22:17

All the time. But I’m noticing a lot that even much younger people are discovering and appreciating music of the 80s and 90s especially. All the time on YouTube you see young people commenting on how good the music from that time was.

43ontherocksporfavor · 31/08/2023 22:27

Of course! It’s the best therapy.

AlisonDonut · 31/08/2023 22:31

I have a shed at the top of the garden with all my old CDs and records in, plus a record and cd player and there is nothing quite like popping an Orange Juice or Aztec Camera LP on and putting my feet up to hark back to the old days.

SoundsLikeAYouProblem · 31/08/2023 22:34

I have started to listen to old albums I used to have around 35 years ago. Happiest days of my life. I wish I could be that happy carefree person again with easy going friends, energy, an exciting future ahead and no worries.

freetheunicorn1 · 31/08/2023 22:37

I went to see James and Razorlight last month!

Globules · 31/08/2023 22:37

Never stopped listening to them tbh... Except de la soul, as I only had them on cassette. I was really happy when 3 feet high and rising appeared on Spotify earlier this year. Royalty issues meant it took forever to resolve.

Inthebathagain · 31/08/2023 22:38

I saw Ash and Supergrass play last year. Hilarious being part of a room full of mid 40s all singing

"We are YOUNG!"
