When you were young, with no responsibilities and life wasn't totally shit?

I'm working my way through YouTube live Marillion concerts from the 1980s and marvelling that I can remember most of the words when I forgot 2 of the 5 things I needed in Tesco earlier 😂

Anyone want to share their 'I was young and happy once' tunes?

@Globules me too! Sounds soooo good still.

HarrietofFire · 31/08/2023 22:41

Listened to Spear of Destiny very loudly on my headies walking to work today

ZitWit · 31/08/2023 22:43

Ooh yes, Wham “Make it Big!” I had just learnt to drive and zoomed around in my “dog-shit brown” Mini, with my tapes playing full blast… the poor car was crammed with giggling, singing girls, sweets and cassette tapes, mainly Now that’s What I Call Music 2 and 3. and the charts taped on a Sunday
evening😂 What gloriously happy carefree times they were!
Never listen to modern music, still love my old stuff from late 70s and all through the 80s.

Picklemeyellow · 31/08/2023 22:57

ZitWit my first car was a mini too. I remember having to pull the choke out to give me extra bit of ‘turbo’ on roundabouts haha!

ZitWit · 31/08/2023 23:08

@Picklemeyellow

Aah, the beloved choke! The street used to fill with blue smoke on a cold morning!😁
I loved that car so much, I washed it.every other day… the winter of 84/85 was quite harsh and I didn’t realise that washing the car late afternoon meant the bugger froze solid by 8pm - going ‘out-out’ time…. I had that choke out so much the cable snapped and ended up being held in place by a clothes peg! The steering wheel was huge, the boot was tiny, and it was sooo basic by todays standards…. But the joy and freedom it gave me….priceless❤️

I saw Ash and Supergrass play last year. Hilarious being part of a room full of mid 40s all singing

"We are YOUNG!"

I'm loved Ash and especially Supergrass!!!

mondaytosunday · 31/08/2023 23:48

Heart 70s and 80s are the default radio stations on the car radio.

SapphireSeptember · 31/08/2023 23:52

I've been a huge Evanescence fan since I was 14, I can listen to them, or Linkin Park, Seether, The Rasmus or HIM and just be back in my bedroom, aged 16.

Bloody Heart 00s is my favourite radio station at the moment, I can't listen to Planet Rock or my colleagues complain, but I love listening to that. That takes me right back to being a kid!

Soonenough · 01/09/2023 00:49

@AlisonDonut Aztec Camera ! Love old music, takes me back to being in my 20s, no responsibilities and the future ahead. Bittersweet though as life did not turn out as planned . Remember when listening to records was an activity and not just noise in the background ?

Allchangepls · 01/09/2023 01:35

I'm 39 and my memory is apparently shot to pieces...... but yesterday in the car I sang along word perfect to Gangstas Paradise by Coolio. Word fucking perfect I tell you and my DH gave me a little clap 😂
Music from back in the day brings me joy every day!

ChaToilLeam · 01/09/2023 02:33

Love listening to the 70s and 80s, especially all the new wave and New Romantic stuff. Modern music is rubbish in comparison!

BonnyLassie99 · 01/09/2023 02:47

I was born in the early 80s and so was a teenager in the 90s and so I do love listening to pop music from like 1995-1999!

lardass88 · 01/09/2023 03:56

All the time! Like many others I can't remember why I walked into a room but can sing salt n pepa's "shoop"WORD FOR WORD 🤣

CheshireSplat · 01/09/2023 04:02

Ah yes! I have some old favourites I frequently go back to. Am really enjoying Steve Lamacq and Jo Wiley's britpop series on BBC Sounds, real nostalgia and that is encouraging me to listen to more from that time, absolutely my era.

HerRoyalNotness · 01/09/2023 04:33

As my 12yo says, the 80s is the golden age of music. I always listen to it. We were in the car one day and I’ve never been to me came on. I knew all the words, my H was wtf? Didn’t know who sang it, but just discovered it’s Charlene. Nope I’ve never heard of her either

VisionsOfSplendour · 01/09/2023 04:51

Easing this makes me wonder rif I'm wrong to have assumed that most people mainly listen to the music they liked growing up. New music is for today's youth and tbey will listen to in 30 years time in the same way our parents like music from their era

And each generation will say how awful the music of next one is

Phos · 01/09/2023 08:26

@Allchangepls reminds me of the time one of my colleagues and I treated the rest of our team (and indeed section of the restaurant) to a rendition of Ice Ice Baby on a works night out.

I then upset the older members of the team by telling them I was only 4 when it came out.

Yes. Your flatmate would sit you down and say ' listen to this !'

My Scottish friends got me into Aztec and lesser known bands from there like the Associates. Now its more a private activity. Perhaps because we don't own 💿 CDs or records anymore. Soon the fridge will be recommending bands based on what you've eaten lately . 😱

SquareOne01 · 01/09/2023 09:11

Yes I had The Smiths on half the day yesterday! I just pick a random band I used to love and ask Alexa.

PoppyPansyCampion · 01/09/2023 09:19

Oh @Toffeesgirl I loved Marillion then and still do now! Their lyrics are so clever! Saw them live maybe 1985/6.
I downloaded Fugazi on Spotify not long ago.
Other than that - yes i listen to a lot of 80s compilations. My 90s born children still listen to Pet Shop Boys, Tears For Fears etc as they say it takes them back too.
I currently have Born In The 80s playing on spotify but it's a misnomer really as its aimed at people who were teenagers in the 80s I think.

43ontherocksporfavor · 01/09/2023 09:24

My Spotify playlist is a real mixture so I don’t really think of them as old songs, just music I like. DC are 19&23 and they’ve introduced me to newer stuff too plus DH is a radio 6 fan so he hears lots of new stuff that filters through to me.

43ontherocksporfavor · 01/09/2023 09:26

Heard a blast from the past lately and had to download it on Spotify- Remember the promise you made by Cock Robin!

I'm in my mid 50's and I remember a few years ago watching a bunch of youngsters supporting an act I was seeing, it was iIrc only their 3rd gig. I have since seen them 3 more times, twice as a support act and once as the headline act...that band is The Blossoms and I love 'em.
New and, indeed, old music is for everyone of all ages.

It is now a noise in my background as I depod dried beans and peas for winter soups and squeeze tomato seeds into jam jars for next year.
