Does this work for a wedding guest?

I absolutely love this dress and it's. A gorgeous fit, but I'm worried I might come across as too formal- please let me know if I'm overthinking!

Context: wedding is in Istanbul, in the evening and the bride has told me she loves it, but I just want to sensecheck. I've only recently lost enough weight to wear anything like this and I'm still trying to get used to adapting my style from constantly covering up all my bumpy bits.

Tough one. If it was in the uk, I’d so no, but if hot weather and evening, maybe? I wouldn’t wear this to a wedding, but I don’t think you’d be unreasonable to wear it if you want to.

What kind of venue in Instanbul? Are either of them muslim? Remember its a Muslim country and depending on the venue / guests, You may feel very uncomfortable

PawsAndReflection · 31/08/2023 01:35

No both English (one has a Turkish parent hence the venue). We've sort of been given the direction that everyone will be dressing up, but I'm very much a jeans and sweatshirt person which is why I'm struggling!

Lovely dress but wouldn't say it fits the wedding guest vibe

CrappyBarbara · 31/08/2023 02:09

I might not wear that to an UK evening do but in America that would be perfectly appropriate for an evening wedding. Not sure about Turkey though 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ruthietuthie · 31/08/2023 02:14

I got married in Turkey. My husband is Turkish, but we met in the US, and his family is cosmopolitan. This would be perfect. All the guests at my wedding wore glamorous evening gowns, full-length. Go for it. (Of course, if the parents are really religious or the bride wears a hijab, then the situation is entirely different. But most families in Istanbul are extremely cosmopolitan and Muslim largely in name only, rather than in practice.

This. The bride says she likes it - surely that's the highest seal of approval? AFAIK, Istanbul loves to dress up. Have you got some nice dangly earrings?

Congrats on getting into the kind of shape this dress demands - and have a great time!

I'd say it was ok. I went to a couple of weddings when I was there and there was a mix of 'everyday wear' to blingy evening gowns.

Covetthee · 31/08/2023 05:16

Its lovely OP!

As a middle easterner myself i will tell you that there will be ALOT of Glamorous looks if they have a lot of turkish guests , we love a good wedding outfit/look, so this would definitely work esp with the right hair and make up. It’s definitely not too formal for that setting.

AutumnOcean · 31/08/2023 05:54

It's gorgeous!

myladybelle · 31/08/2023 06:08

I'd honestly wear this to an evening UK wedding. Not too formal at all.

thebiggestsaleever · 31/08/2023 06:10

Think it’s lovely. Wear it 😊

Doingmybest12 · 31/08/2023 06:12

I think it's fine for a wedding, though I'd feel I needed to cover my shoulders with something light for the day otherwise it is a bit too evening wear for me . Love the colour .

WunWun · 31/08/2023 06:55

I think it's fine, but will only look good if you're the size of the model!

WunWun · 31/08/2023 06:55

And it will be hard to find underwear that isn't visible under it

I finally broke down and bought a Skims bodysuit- it's amazing and I even managed to get it for the same colour!

I think it's fabulous.

herewego9 · 31/08/2023 07:18

It's absolutely stunning. There are always loads of replies on mumsnet saying things are too glam/evening for weddings. I think it must be English weddings as any I've been to are very, very dressy.

lastminutewednesday · 31/08/2023 07:40

It's lovely and perfect for a wedding imo.

Maraa · 31/08/2023 08:01

I LOVE this!!! I would wear this to a wedding here to be honest, as long as i knew the bridesmaids were wearing different!! Go for it, you will look stunning and congrats on the weight loss! You will look amazing! Enjoy xx

Startrekkeruniverse · 31/08/2023 08:10

Perfect 👌

MintJulia · 31/08/2023 08:15

It's fabulous. If you take a wrap to cover your shoulders while travelling, maybe add a contrast colour or a different texture, but the dress itself is stunning.

Jewellery?

Whattheactualwhatnow · 31/08/2023 08:22

I think it’s gorgeous. And perfect. I’d probably wear it with an light/white oversized blazer with sleeves pushed up, during the day

Flyinggeesei234 · 31/08/2023 08:30

Honestly OP best wedding guest dress suggestion I’ve seen on S&B for a long time. For the event you describe it looks great. Enjoy choosing jewellery etc.

10HailMarys · 31/08/2023 08:45

Having seen a lot of pictures of Turkish weddings in the UK, I would say this is completely appropriate!
