Do Brits not use face cloths?

UnicornSlippers29 · 30/08/2023 19:09

I'm from North America and I grew up washing my face with a face wash and a wash cloth.

Wet face, suds up the cloth and give it a gentle scrub until all my makeup is off and rinse with wet cloth. Then I use a toner on a cotton pad to remove any leftover traces, but there's usually not any unless I've missed a spot around my hairline.

I've noticed through travelling to hotels here in the U.K. and much of Europe that there are no face cloths (flannels?) in the rooms to wash my face with so I have to wet the bottom corner of the towel and use as a face cloth.

How does everyone wash their face here? Do you mainly use makeup wipes? I've tried a few but they never seem to work very well

  • I'm always left with lots of makeup on my toner soaked cotton pad. It also seems a lot of waste that ends up in the landfill.

How does everyone ensure their face is clean from makeup & sunscreen without a gentle scrub and water? Was I using the wipes wrong?

Unfortunately I can't blame them as they're all adults and married off.
Mind, that's not to say they've not sneaked them out when visiting.

@BaaCode

stsnd in the bathroom, pretend to take one out of a packet and see what you automatically do with them.

if you have a DW/DH/DP you'll find them where their hobby kit is!! Fabulous for car maintenance, gardening, wiping down bike/kit...

SwedishEdith · 30/08/2023 20:03

Always use them. In France, you always get the little flannel face mittens.

Jamtartforme · 30/08/2023 20:05

I used to use cleansing cream on a cotton pad, now I use it on a reusable pad. Otherwise it’s cleansing cream and a flannel in the bath.

LindorDoubleChoc · 30/08/2023 20:06

I don't wear a lot of make up so just some Micellar cleansing wash or even gentle soap and water and rubbing with hands is enough for me. I absolutely do use flannels for general washing and showering though. I take them with me on trips away from home.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 30/08/2023 20:10

Not me 🤷‍♀️
I cup my hands and splash my face.

clarrylove · 30/08/2023 20:10

A little bit off topic but we don't tend to use them any more as how do you dry them between uses? They tend to get hung on the basin all day and take ages to dry and for a large family they are just in the way. Any ideas?

You know when sometimes you see something, and it just illustrates in a capsule how different people are?

  1. I'd never considered that there were levels of quality in flannels.
  2. I apply hair products (only ever to wet hair) in the bathroom so I can wash my hands. Never considered having a dedicated wiping cloth.
  3. I am nowhere near organised enough to carry an emergency flannel. I often forget my wallet. Google pay is a lifesaver.
  4. If there's no hand dryer I wipe my hands on my jeans.

@BaaCode we've probably got lots in common, we might like the same food and films or whatever. But my god, I think our brains must be wired up completely differently. I suspect you are much much better at adulting than me. (did you reconcile your cheque book when we used to have them? I never even knew what that was!)

I was thinking all of this!

Towel rail? Mine is heated so they dry in half an hour.

Thank God for Yanks telling us Brits how to wash. We'd never have thought of washing at all if they weren't around to teach us.

Yanks, seriously 🙄 lighten up

You wash them after each use.

foolishone · 30/08/2023 20:13

I would take my own and towels. I never use the hotel ones.

Itsokay2020 · 30/08/2023 20:14

Always use them, although mine is a bamboo cloth that I replace every three months. Never travel without one, and always prefer to take my own.

@UnicornSlippers29 please, don’t ever use face wipes - awful for skin and the environment and I’d ban them tomorrow if I could!!

foolishone · 30/08/2023 20:15

Actually, that's a lie. I don't use a flannel for my face because I've got a battery brush thing. I use a flannel for my body.

chunkychunks · 30/08/2023 20:16

I use micellar water on cotton pads before bed and in the shower in the mornings I use face wash and my hands.

Any time I used a flannel in the past it just had that damp smell to it after one use which puts me off I must not be very good at drying them properly xx

we have loads and they get washed after each use.

ShadyPaws · 30/08/2023 20:20

Every day
For taking makeup off with a cleansing balm
Bum drying after a peri bottle Grin
Then older ones end up being used as cleaning cloths. Even the cat has one for drying him off

I hate those things! I grew up in France where they are called "a glove" because you could put your hand in it. Some were for the face, some for the rest of the body and the bathroom just smelled of damp as they dried between uses. I hated them because you could never be sure what someone else had used it for.

Nn9011 · 30/08/2023 20:20

Not everyone does use face cloths, probably would have used them more historically than these days. A lot of people use face wipes or muslin cloths or even just wash with hands and wipe on towel to dry.
It wouldn't be typical to get a face cloth in a hotel here or probably even in mainland Europe, usually you'll just get a bath towel and bath matt for floor.

NeedTheSeaside · 30/08/2023 20:21

Spottywombat · 30/08/2023 20:00

Car cleaning apparently! They do actual flannels too.

@Spottywombat

ah thanks for that. Terry toweling isn't what I'm looking for, for personal use, co incidentally I think what I need is the car polishing cloths Halfords sell (or used to). A very very soft white cotton, but I'll have a look at the face cloths next time I'm in Costco. I need some for the car 😂😂😂

@UnicornSlippers29 I love your reply about the detail in your post!!!

Growing up, my Mum always had one in her bag for our mucky little faces 😊. She'd rise it in hot water, wring it out tight and put it in a plastic bag. Then we had them in the bathroom for hands & faces before bed. Probably in the bath too, though I remember sponges featuring there too.

i use them to wash & dry babies bottoms before putting a fresh nappy on (after using disposable wipes for the worst of the mess though)

i use them for lots of things, my colour coded system would make most peoples heads explode! 😂😂😂

but I don't wash my face with them very often. I have an 'origins' face wash, I apply with my fingers and rinse under the shower or with my hands cupped under the bathroom sink.

Some hotels do, some hotels don't, but I don't use them on my face.

User1659463 · 30/08/2023 20:21

I don't wear makeup so just use soapy hands mostly but I use a flannel if I need to wash suncream off as it needs a bit more than just my hands washing it

Strawberryshitcake · 30/08/2023 20:21

I don’t use them. I double cleanse and it gets everything off.

LlynTegid · 30/08/2023 20:21

Yes, call it a flannel.

(OP, for information, after summer comes autumn. The Fall is a tv series or a band from Manchester that existed until 2018).

FlorenceTheFerocious · 30/08/2023 20:23

Yes, everyone I know well enough to know this about them uses face cloths. I hate that so many hotels don't supply them. I feel as if I used to find them in hotels but now I don't 🤔. Maybe it's my imagination / coincidence though

Same here. Cotton pads/micellar water. Hate the damp smell of drying flannels.

bryceQ · 30/08/2023 20:23

Yes I use a flannel. I would take it with me. I use an oil cleanser and a flannel to remove the day.

Some hotels do have them. But maybe they don't like people using them to remove make up?
