Do Brits not use face cloths?

I'm from North America and I grew up washing my face with a face wash and a wash cloth.

Wet face, suds up the cloth and give it a gentle scrub until all my makeup is off and rinse with wet cloth. Then I use a toner on a cotton pad to remove any leftover traces, but there's usually not any unless I've missed a spot around my hairline.

I've noticed through travelling to hotels here in the U.K. and much of Europe that there are no face cloths (flannels?) in the rooms to wash my face with so I have to wet the bottom corner of the towel and use as a face cloth.

How does everyone wash their face here? Do you mainly use makeup wipes? I've tried a few but they never seem to work very well

  • I'm always left with lots of makeup on my toner soaked cotton pad. It also seems a lot of waste that ends up in the landfill.

How does everyone ensure their face is clean from makeup & sunscreen without a gentle scrub and water? Was I using the wipes wrong?

I think they get stained a lot so hotels don’t do them as much. I use a Muslin, you get them with hot cloth cleansers. Benefits are you can wash them easily and they dry quickly as really thin. Especially on a hotel towel radiator.

You get them in posh hotels. Sometimes there are dark coloured ones with a note saying to use them for makeup, as well as the usual white ones.

DinnaeFashYersel · 30/08/2023 19:21

I never use them.

I never wear make up either so quick splash with water before bed and I have a shower in the morning.

Notamushroomwearer · 30/08/2023 19:21

Yes but I double cleanse if wearing make up.
Washable round pads with a gentle cream cleanser like Loccitane to dissolve and remove make up then a cream cleanser or balm dotted all over face and gently rub over face and neck ,then remove with a soft flannel and warm water.
Gentle rinse with lukewarm water .
Never use a foaming product or scrub.
You need a cream or oil to properly remove make up and sorry its not good manners to leave make up all over a towel.

I do have some of those magic flannels the size of a penny if room is an issue or away for long.

Orangemoon8 · 30/08/2023 19:22

Yes we do. I do exactly the same as you, wash cloth then toner. But I bring my own when travelling. I just got back from abroad and bought my own, hotel didn’t supply them.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 30/08/2023 19:22

I’ve never used them! I use soapy cream facewash or scrub. If I have worn makeup (only light now I’m in my 40s) then I take any remaining residue off with rosewater on cotton wool (or reusable equivalent round thing).

UnicornSlippers29 · 30/08/2023 19:23

Mystery solved then! Thanks ladies. I had no idea it was the norm for people to bring their own.

I know someone said they are quite a personal item and they'd not like to use one from a hotel, but this just seems odd to me considering you're sleeping on hotel bed sheets with your face and drying yourself including down below with a hotel towel. Seems much cleaner to me to be using a clean (cleaned in the same laundry facilities as sheets & towels) face cloth / flannel with hot water and soap on it than the sheets & towels which have the unlikely potential (I hope!) to just be fluffed and repositioned rather than fully changed by a lazy rogue maid.

I think I will just continue to use the end of a small towel as my face cloth. Seems a bit of a pain to bring a wet one back with me in my luggage.

I've seen them provided in hotels, but obviously not all. Maybe some of the chains don't bother.

Hate the word flannel

Not sure why

So do I 😂 Reminds me of the word my grandmother used to describe the cloths used to clean babies bums 😆

Alwayswonderedwhy · 30/08/2023 19:26

Yes. I also use them to have a wash with if I want a freshen up.. face, pots etc.

Spacemoon · 30/08/2023 19:26

I'm quite surprised at the amount of replies saying they do use them, as I haven't heard of anyone under the age of about 60 using flannels. Not since the 80s/90s anyway! Remember using them all the time as a kid/teen though. I just assumed they had phased out as not even my parents use them anymore and they used to love a good flannel 🤣

I use those cloth reusable/washable pads and micellar water to remove make up. As does pretty much every woman I know.

Surlaplage · 30/08/2023 19:26

I'm a flaneller.
I use it with cleanser though.

HermioneWeasley · 30/08/2023 19:27

One of the great joys of travelling in America is that wash cloths are provided.

PinkTonic · 30/08/2023 19:28

I use hot cloth cleanser with a muslin cloth, and washable bamboo pads for toner. I take supplies with me when staying away from home.

Favouritefruits · 30/08/2023 19:29

I use a flannel and so do the children have but I’ve never seen them in hotels in the uk or abroad.

IrritableVowel · 30/08/2023 19:29

I bring my own, with either a zip lock bag or shower cap to wrap it up in before popping back in mu luggage

OldEvilOwl · 30/08/2023 19:29

I use one. I just put warm water on it though to wash my face as I have very dry skin

Notlongnow01 · 30/08/2023 19:30

I’ve never used one and would definitely not use a hotel one on my face.

To clean my face I use cotton wool and cleanser.

Ladyj84 · 30/08/2023 19:31

Yep we use them easy for washing kids and always take own going away

spendtime · 30/08/2023 19:31

I wouldn't want to use a hotel one. I just take my own

Spottywombat · 30/08/2023 19:32

Costco do massive flannels in white cotton, marketed as disposable but so useful. Not a chance I'd only use them once. Halfway to nappies in size.

Scousemousey · 30/08/2023 19:32

I buy the thin ones specially to take on holiday as can't rely on hotels to provide them.

Batatahara · 30/08/2023 19:33

It's just different conventions on what's supplied. My American relatives complain about it every time they come here!

Mariotoaddaisy · 30/08/2023 19:33

Everyone I know uses them. They're sold in places like Primark and Next (if you wanted to do some actual research)

I don't want someone else's fanny flannel in my face though. So I'm not surprised our hotels don't have them as standard.

C152 · 30/08/2023 19:34

I'm not British, but I live here. I've never used a face cloth and don't see the point; I just use my hands and soap and water. (I rarely wear makeup, but my mother always swore by just using a bit of cotton wool and some Johnson's baby oil to remove all makeup. No need for expensive toners.)
