Do Brits not use face cloths?

UnicornSlippers29 · 30/08/2023 19:09

I'm from North America and I grew up washing my face with a face wash and a wash cloth.

Wet face, suds up the cloth and give it a gentle scrub until all my makeup is off and rinse with wet cloth. Then I use a toner on a cotton pad to remove any leftover traces, but there's usually not any unless I've missed a spot around my hairline.

I've noticed through travelling to hotels here in the U.K. and much of Europe that there are no face cloths (flannels?) in the rooms to wash my face with so I have to wet the bottom corner of the towel and use as a face cloth.

How does everyone wash their face here? Do you mainly use makeup wipes? I've tried a few but they never seem to work very well

  • I'm always left with lots of makeup on my toner soaked cotton pad. It also seems a lot of waste that ends up in the landfill.

How does everyone ensure their face is clean from makeup & sunscreen without a gentle scrub and water? Was I using the wipes wrong?

Yes, call it a flannel.

(OP, for information, after summer comes autumn. The Fall is a tv series or a band from Manchester that existed until 2018).

Ah Mark E. Smith ❤️

Not since 1985. Not sure why - they worked quite well. Might invest in a couple

Every day
For taking makeup off with a cleansing balm
Bum drying after a peri bottle Grin
Then older ones end up being used as cleaning cloths. Even the cat has one for drying him off

What does bum drying after a peri bottle mean?

FettleOfKish · 30/08/2023 20:27

Going entirely against the grain but I only use face cloths / flannels when I'm in a hotel. We don't have them at home, I use cleansing balm and fingers and/or micellar water and reusable bamboo 'cotton' pads for removing make up.

Most European hotels we stay in seem to have them though. Both I stayed in recently in Switzerland definitely did.

TheClitterati · 30/08/2023 20:29

Big face cloth fan here.

MMAMPWGHAP · 30/08/2023 20:29

IMO more Brits use them in Indian restaurants than at home!

Prescottdanni123 · 30/08/2023 20:30

I use face cloths but when I go on holiday I have to take my own.

Lelophants · 30/08/2023 20:31

Wash your hands and then use your hands to wash your face. I was always told that was better. But we do also use face cloths and you need to bring them to hotels.

gogomoto · 30/08/2023 20:32

They are provided at most decent hotels (4* & up) and pads to remove make up are too.

framedpic · 30/08/2023 20:32

I rub ultra bland on my face then wash off with hot wet face cloth.

A comment from a pp reminded me of something from years ago. A divorced woman I worked with who was probably about 45 at the time used to meet up midweek with men visiting the city we worked in for work. After work one afternoon I was in the toilet before o left for the day. She came in, wet her face cloth in the sink then went into one of the cubicles saying "I'm going to wash my bits girls". Needless to say her "flannel" became the stuff of office folklore

rasellagirl · 30/08/2023 20:32

Same as a PP, my DSis can’t bear the word flannel. We have to say facecloth.

wasahoarder · 30/08/2023 20:34

OP I use flannels for my face but my husband is French and he can't get his head round it! To him flannels are hand towels, to dry your hands on after washing them once you've been to the loo. Like in a really posho hotel!

DinnaeFashYersel · 30/08/2023 19:21

I never use them.

I never wear make up either so quick splash with water before bed and I have a shower in the morning.

Same here. They are called face clothes in Ireland though, never flannels.

LadyoftheLavaLamp · 30/08/2023 20:35

What @AuntieMarys said

Just returned from a 5* in London and there were several 😂

ShadyPaws · 30/08/2023 20:36

@DietrichandDiMaggio I wash with water using a peri bottle after the toilet (to prevent UTIs as very prone to them) so use a flannel for any excess water
I have a colour coding situation!

continentallentil · 30/08/2023 20:37

Lots of people do

But you have to stay in more expensive hotels to get them laid on, or dedicate a corner of your towel 😬

Sgtmajormummy · 30/08/2023 20:38

It used to be part of our holiday preparations to buy DD one of those pressed disks that turn into a flannel when you add water. No hotel flannels wherever we’ve been.
I prefer wash mitts because IME they don’t dribble as much. I’ve even been known to make my own from old towels, the more threadbare the better.

guiltyfeethavegotnorythym · 30/08/2023 19:17

We do use them ( well some ) but they are so personal an item no would would ever dream of using a hotel supplied one or one belonging to someone else . A bit like knickers .

Posh hotels do supply them, you loon.

Snippit · 30/08/2023 20:39

I don’t find them to be hygienic, unless you hot wash them after every use. I use a cream cleanser which I remove with damp cotton pads followed by toner, much more hygienic.

I do use a flannel in the bath to give my body a good scrub, then it goes into the wash.

OP is neurodiverse and has ASD and ADHD. OP is very descriptive because she pays extreme attention to detail and also ensures she’s very clear about things because she knows everyone has their own way of doing things, and has a different way of processing information.

OP also wasn’t sure if people actually used cloths to wash their faces in the UK so felt she’d explain the process she takes to ensure her face is squeaky clean to see how it compared to other potential ways people wash their faces here.

OP was just trying to be clear to make sure her question was understood. Unlike a few MN’ers she didn’t intend that the added info would make other posters feel like a bit of a daft ass to prove her point 😉😘

Who isn't neurodiverse these days?!

daisychain01 · 30/08/2023 20:42

No, on account that someone might have used it for their arse (lowers the tone of the thread immeasurably). I am serious though, it has been known. I daren't risk it now.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 30/08/2023 20:26

What does bum drying after a peri bottle mean?

A peri bottle is a portable bidet in the form of a squeezable bottle with a directable jet. Apparently they are popular with mothers who have recently given birth.

ShellySarah · 30/08/2023 20:45

Flannels are rough and not that good for your skin I'd imagine.

I use Take The Day Off Cleansing Balm. Dissolves your make up and grime and then just rinse off. Toner on a ball for the rest of the make up traces.

LoobyDop · 30/08/2023 20:46

The one time I used a hotel face flannel it set my skin on fire- clearly had been washed or bleached in something pretty hardcore and not rinsed properly.

😂 this thread is brilliant.

They don't have to be posh hotels though.

Premier Inn have them. Hamptons have them. I genuinely can't remember not finding them in any hotel I've stayed in.

And they change them every day. Like I do at home after taking my makeup off. Just chuck that days flannel into the wash.

I've swapped to microfibre cloths though recently as they're bigger and softer.
