Do Brits not use face cloths?

UnicornSlippers29 · 30/08/2023 19:09

I'm from North America and I grew up washing my face with a face wash and a wash cloth.

Wet face, suds up the cloth and give it a gentle scrub until all my makeup is off and rinse with wet cloth. Then I use a toner on a cotton pad to remove any leftover traces, but there's usually not any unless I've missed a spot around my hairline.

I've noticed through travelling to hotels here in the U.K. and much of Europe that there are no face cloths (flannels?) in the rooms to wash my face with so I have to wet the bottom corner of the towel and use as a face cloth.

How does everyone wash their face here? Do you mainly use makeup wipes? I've tried a few but they never seem to work very well

  • I'm always left with lots of makeup on my toner soaked cotton pad. It also seems a lot of waste that ends up in the landfill.

How does everyone ensure their face is clean from makeup & sunscreen without a gentle scrub and water? Was I using the wipes wrong?

So many odd answers. I had no idea a flannel was such a personal item. They’re in most hotels I’ve been to and I don’t hesitate to use them. Why would I?

It's not really odd for people to think differently to you, is it? It's kind of normal to have different opinions.

Canthave2manycats · 30/08/2023 23:33

I don't use them. I cleanse and tone with Lancome products, and use cotton wool.

MrsClatterbuck · 31/08/2023 02:06

Most hotels I have been in supply face cloths.
I use one at home but in the morning usually. At night I use a wipe and then a cleansing lotion with cotton wool to remove make up. Then use toner before moisturiser.

When at a hotel or not at home I use those Olay cloths that you wet which then gives a lather to wash my face. They are easy to put in your wash bag and take up very little space.

Countrydiary · 31/08/2023 03:49

I use flannels at home for a quick freshen up of armpits and around bottom and between legs. I also have facecloths which are crucially DIFFERENT FLANNELS. I know I’m not using a bum flannel on my face at home but have no guarantee about that in a hotel, would not go near my face!

Ginmonkeyagain · 31/08/2023 08:11

I buy flannels from Ikea in bundles, they have a little cloth hook so they can be hung up to dry and then put in the wash.

TBH I use them for a few days, we have our own ones and they are thoroughly rinsed out with very hot water after each use. It is fine.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 31/08/2023 08:12

Seven for £2 at Tesco last week.

Flannel users - don't you just end up with loads of soaking wet flannels in your laundry basket??

we squeeze the flannels well after use and put them in a basket similar to this photo.

I just dry my face cloths on the towel rail, use a fresh one daily, then pop them in a little net bag with the washable pads.
Throw in with towels

Who isn't neurodiverse these days?!

@Procrastinatingbecauseithelps What a disgusting way to diminish those of us who's issues have been missed because we are female.

Ignorant, unkind and genuinely pathetic.

definatly a possibilty if you don't have a flannel management system (FMS) in place.

We each have a flannel hook so they can be hung up to dry and resued. Sometimes damp flannel get into the washing basket, but its no biggie.

Thank you for naming the toxic behaviours that I couldn't recall the names of.

I need a Flannel Management System.

Nomechanged · 31/08/2023 22:35

Where are people buying their reusable pads from please for cleansing? Or rounds.

So what happens if you wipe your face with a bath towel after you get out of the shower? That’s definitely a towel that will be used all over body.

Jntprcsbllyngcnt · 01/09/2023 08:21

I only ever use a flannel on my body, if I have a bath. I use those 'Erase Your Face' things to take off make up. Saves me money on make up remover products, is better for the environment as you wash and reuse them, and you're also putting fewer chemicals on your skin.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 01/09/2023 08:42

I use micellar water and cotton pads to take off my makeup and then use my hands to wash my face with a face wash. Flannel wash cloths are way too harsh and abrasive on the skin, so to exfoliate I use a chemical AHA/BHA exfoliant which is really gentle and much more effective. (Facial scrubs are also too rough, but that's another thread 🤣).

Also bacteria starts to grow on a wash cloth after 20-30 minutes so they need washing in a high temperature wash after every single use which is way too much of a faff!

Why not just use your hands??

ImthatBoleyngirl · 01/09/2023 08:50

@BaBaaCode for your skin's sake please don't use sugar as an exfoliant, it is too abrasive and will cause micro tears, dryness, irritation etc

I use a balm or cream type cleanser , Ultra bland in the winter.
Washing with my hands would be completely ineffective as I use warm water to melt and remove the cleanser.
I'm post menopause so my skin is quite dry.
It's also a lovely ritual applying the cleanser, then removing with the warm cloth.
Hands just wouldn't feel properly clean.
Aaaah lovely.
I also use the soft bamboo type cloths or the soft erase your face ones.
Op didn't say flannel btw

Zero faff, I use one a day , leave to dry and put in a net bag to wash with the reusable pads.
Bung in with towels

Funderthighs · 01/09/2023 08:55

@Nomechanged the reuseable “rounds” are available at The Body Shop” and on Amazon. I’ve seen them in other shops too.

I use a balm cleanser so need a cloth to remove it. It's not abrasive. There's no scrubbing or pulling.

GeraltsBathtub · 01/09/2023 11:30

I use reusable makeup pads (like round cotton pads). A flannel is too rough on my skin.

Notamushroomwearer · 01/09/2023 11:37

Flannel
Fairly rough cloth of towelling bordered on the edge used for bodies
Face cloth
Soft cotton, bamboo, muslin or those synthetic no make up ones.

Mystery solved then! Thanks ladies. I had no idea it was the norm for people to bring their own.

I know someone said they are quite a personal item and they'd not like to use one from a hotel, but this just seems odd to me considering you're sleeping on hotel bed sheets with your face and drying yourself including down below with a hotel towel. Seems much cleaner to me to be using a clean (cleaned in the same laundry facilities as sheets & towels) face cloth / flannel with hot water and soap on it than the sheets & towels which have the unlikely potential (I hope!) to just be fluffed and repositioned rather than fully changed by a lazy rogue maid.

I think I will just continue to use the end of a small towel as my face cloth. Seems a bit of a pain to bring a wet one back with me in my luggage.

They’re cheap to buy - last lot I bought were 4 for £1 at Tesco. Just throw away any wet ones before you travel home.

That’s even less eco than hotel towels being washed every day. Also, face cloths/flannels won’t take that long to dry and the max number you’d have wet at any one time would be one ?

frechette · 01/09/2023 11:57

Not British and I've never used one, and never heard of anyone from my country using one either. They conjure up images of old people washing themselves with a flannel instead of showering 😩I used to know an older guy who would use one to wash himself everywhere, incl down there! 😱They must be pretty unhygienic if people wipe off make-up etc on them every day, or do you wash it after each use, which must be a faff...

I shower and wash my face with baby lotion in the shower, or sometimes just water. But then I don't cover my face with make-up. If I wear mascara it washes off in the shower just fine and if not, I use a wet wipe to remove the rest.
