Do Brits not use face cloths?

UnicornSlippers29 · 30/08/2023 19:09

I'm from North America and I grew up washing my face with a face wash and a wash cloth.

Wet face, suds up the cloth and give it a gentle scrub until all my makeup is off and rinse with wet cloth. Then I use a toner on a cotton pad to remove any leftover traces, but there's usually not any unless I've missed a spot around my hairline.

I've noticed through travelling to hotels here in the U.K. and much of Europe that there are no face cloths (flannels?) in the rooms to wash my face with so I have to wet the bottom corner of the towel and use as a face cloth.

How does everyone wash their face here? Do you mainly use makeup wipes? I've tried a few but they never seem to work very well

  • I'm always left with lots of makeup on my toner soaked cotton pad. It also seems a lot of waste that ends up in the landfill.

How does everyone ensure their face is clean from makeup & sunscreen without a gentle scrub and water? Was I using the wipes wrong?

They are considered "a personal item" so you are supposed to bring your own (Or a sponge).

SuperiorM · 30/08/2023 19:48

I’ve often seen them supplied in hotels and they are also usually supplied holiday lets. Both of the ones we went to this year had them. Whilst I think your make up removal method is sound, I’d hesitate to use a hotel or let face cloth/flannel in circumstances where I stained it with makeup. Especially as they are usually white. So make up wipes are packed for hols.

aSofaNearYou · 30/08/2023 19:48

They are a thing but I just wash my face with my hands.

GigiAnnna · 30/08/2023 19:48

I never use them. I wash my face in the bath or shower with my hands and face wash or soap.If there's make up I can't get off with soap and water I use micellar water and a cotton pad.

SistersNotCisters · 30/08/2023 19:49

We use them but wash cloths are very personal items that hotels, guest houses and B&Bs don't normally supply. We take our own, chuck it in a sealable bag and take it home again.

xogossipgirlxo · 30/08/2023 19:49

I use face cloth, but I always have my own one that is added with make up remover. Then I wash my face with face wash gel/powder, toner and skincare follows. If I wasn’t wearing make up/spf, I would probably use just face wash and then skincare.

NotFastButFurious · 30/08/2023 19:51

I’m currently in a uk hotel (I think it’s an American brand though) and there are face cloths but I haven’t used them to wash my face! I just wet my face with water from under the tap or shower, lather cleanser in my hands and then rinse off. I don’t wear make up though.

greenacrylicpaint · 30/08/2023 19:52

we have loads of flannels that we use to wash our faces and also scrub and soap up in the shower.

they get clean in a normal wash, surely a hotel laundry service would easily be able to deal with them.
my suspicion is that they don't have them in many hotels as anything small enough gets stolen.

RedVanYellowVan · 30/08/2023 19:52

I just wash my face with my hands, but I don't wear any make up. I do have a flannel but it lives in a plastic bag in my rucksack to be used as a mini towel if I have an impromptu paddle somewhere.

My DM used them all the time and could never quite understand why I didn't.

dudsville · 30/08/2023 19:53

How on earth is a flannel an intimate item compared to a towel that countless strangers have used to dry their bits? I have seen them in hotels and rentals, but not reliably and it always bugs me when they aren't supplied. Like you op i end up wetting a corner of a towel and then can't rinse it properly. I did not know others travel with their own. I'll pop one in my suitcase now to remind me to start doing this! But how annoying to have to carry around a wet flannel.

caringcarer · 30/08/2023 19:53

DragonflyLady · 30/08/2023 19:13

Yes, but you take your own flannels with you.

This. I just pack it into my wash bag.

SophiaElise · 30/08/2023 19:54

I use (and recommend) Liz Earle hot cloth cleanser (followed by Liz Earle toner and moisturiser).

I've seen face cloths/flannels in some higher-end hotels but always pack my own cleansing stuff so have never used them.

NeedTheSeaside · 30/08/2023 19:54

Spottywombat · 30/08/2023 19:32

Costco do massive flannels in white cotton, marketed as disposable but so useful. Not a chance I'd only use them once. Halfway to nappies in size.

@Spottywombat

revthey the loose ones near the towels it are there packets of them somewhere else? (Sold more like face wipes/tissues?).

I love flannels. I have good quality ones in the bathroom for washing myself and cheaper ones in my bedroom for wiping my hands on after applying hair products with my hands.
I also keep a cheap one in a ziplock bag in my handbag for those times when I use a public loo and there's no paper towels to dry my hands on and the hand blower isn't working either.

You know when sometimes you see something, and it just illustrates in a capsule how different people are?

  1. I'd never considered that there were levels of quality in flannels.
  2. I apply hair products (only ever to wet hair) in the bathroom so I can wash my hands. Never considered having a dedicated wiping cloth.
  3. I am nowhere near organised enough to carry an emergency flannel. I often forget my wallet. Google pay is a lifesaver.
  4. If there's no hand dryer I wipe my hands on my jeans.

@BaaCode we've probably got lots in common, we might like the same food and films or whatever. But my god, I think our brains must be wired up completely differently. I suspect you are much much better at adulting than me. (did you reconcile your cheque book when we used to have them? I never even knew what that was!)

Phos · 30/08/2023 19:56

I use them at home but agree never seen them in hotels. I use wipes to remove make up though.

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 30/08/2023 19:57

WaxhamSeals · 30/08/2023 19:12

I’ve never seen face cloths supplied in hotels.
I just wash my face with water, using my hands. I don’t wear make up

I've never not!

In fact just back from staying in 3 separate hotels and 2 university accommodation rooms and all provided face cloths. (I noticed particularly because I made a point of going into Superdrug and picking some up and then thought d'oh, they'll be provided of course)

Tiredmum100 · 30/08/2023 19:58

Yes, I use flannels, but rarely for a hotel to supply them. I take my own.

The flannel does the exfoliating for me.
Get a saucer, put some white sugar on it, wet flannel, dip in the sugar and ' wash ' your body / face.
Amazing exfoliation for free.

Well not free as assume it’s your sugar!

So cringe. It makes you wonder what the OP is like in the real world. Does OP tell people how to use loo roll too? Does the OP scrunch or fold?

It's threads like these that end up being taken the piss out of on other forums! No bloody wonder. 🤣

OP is neurodiverse and has ASD and ADHD. OP is very descriptive because she pays extreme attention to detail and also ensures she’s very clear about things because she knows everyone has their own way of doing things, and has a different way of processing information.

OP also wasn’t sure if people actually used cloths to wash their faces in the UK so felt she’d explain the process she takes to ensure her face is squeaky clean to see how it compared to other potential ways people wash their faces here.

OP was just trying to be clear to make sure her question was understood. Unlike a few MN’ers she didn’t intend that the added info would make other posters feel like a bit of a daft ass to prove her point 😉😘

It’s a lottery as to whether hotels will have them. When they do, it’s a minor win to use theirs and not the one(s) I bring with me and then have to take home damp.

Car cleaning apparently! They do actual flannels too.

Mushroo · 30/08/2023 20:01

I’m surprised at the responses! I don’t normally use them at home but they’re often supplied in hotels so I use them when staying in them.

Im pretty sure both Hilton, Club Quarters and De Vere offer them (chains I typically use with work).

Most places I’ve been to abroad also supply them, mainly city boutique type hotels.

Mykittensmittens · 30/08/2023 20:02

I use the little round pads which are washable - squeezed really well they seem to dry very quickly on the side of the sink.

I did used to use hot cloth cleanser too, but have rediscovered….

ponds cold cream!!!! Amazing stuff. Slather a layer on, wipe it off with a damp washable pad and every trace of make up gone and skin so soft. Cheap! Boots do their own brand of cold
cream too which is even cheaper.

TomatoSandwiches · 30/08/2023 20:02

We use flannels in our house, everyone has a different colour and guest/extras are white.
I would pack my own but I don't use them for my face as they're too course for that, I use oil balm for first cleanse and oil free wash for last, you just need warm water and hands for that.

ichundich · 30/08/2023 20:02

Perhaps upgrade to better hotels. Where I've stayed there's always been a set of face cloths.
