...and yesterday I made vanilla extract. I have never felt more like a parody of myself.

I thought you were going g to say yiu over whipped some cream ...

I've done that before!Grin

CurlewKate · 31/08/2023 10:30

As an experienced butter maker🤣I honestly don't think you need a gadget. It took me about 6 minutes with a bowl and an electric mixer. I haven't got a stand mixer, but I would have used that if I did. Even easier.

The Kenwood Chef attachment per chance? I would like one just because the only time I want cream is 6pm on a Sunday night when the shops are shut 😀 But I have also heard it wasn't great.

The worst attachment was the 'Make cream from milk and butter' attachment.

This meant a hot mixture of skimmed milk on the turn and already somewhat rancid unsalted butter. And because she didn't believe in instructions, she'd reduce the amount of butter down to 1 oz and make up the rest with Flora.

Glovesandscarf · 31/08/2023 10:52

£1:20? I feel a project coming on.

husbandcallsmepickle · 31/08/2023 10:59

New life goal is to make my own butter
In the meantime, is it wanky enough to be simmering all the leftover veg in my fridge to make hidden veg pasta sauce for DS?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/08/2023 11:00

@ErrolTheDragon , I once ate a Bonio for a bet. It was actually quite nice. Our dog wasn’t keen on them, but she’d bury them in the garden for a rainy day, or try to bury them in a DD’s bed. Ditto the odd real bone, hence I’d get a call from upstairs, ‘MUM! Can you please tell your dog to stop burying her bones in my bed??’

Santaseviltwin · 31/08/2023 11:03

Does homemade apple cider vinegar count?

gluenotsoup · 31/08/2023 11:07

So… if I buy cream do I need double or single? And just whisk away with my electric whisk? When do I add the salt, and is it just something like Maldon sea salt?
I feel a project coming on🤔😆

crackofdoom · 31/08/2023 11:14

Do you think it would work if I dumped a load of yellow stickered cream in the food processor and wandered off for 5 minutes?

I'm all about the minimum effort wankitude, me. I make no- knead sourdough bread because it's literally less effort than going down the shop.

There's something almost classically perverse about that scenario.

No, I just had a lot of pet rats, and they could be surprisingly fussy (well, except for one girl who would eat anything and everything, whether it belonged to her or not — trying to put her on a diet would've just resulted in everyone else wasting away while she continued to aspire towards the spherical). The muesli-type pet food mixes tended to contain some things rats can't really eat, and several things they would leave in the bottom of the bowl while looking hopefully at me. The special "selective feeder" lab-block type rat food would just get ignored as though it wasn't even food. And neither of them seemed nutritionally particularly satisfactory. That's how I ended up puréeing cheap bits of meat and offcuts, as well as various other nutritionally-balanced ingredients, to bake into salt-free crunchy meal biscuits for the picky little fuckers.

I love this so much. As a fellow rat lover, this makes me smile so much.

I'm the person that relandscaped her entire garden, and made a literal bombproof rabbit burrow for her pet rabbits though, so I'm not known for sensible behaviour with pets

LifeinadreamChateau · 31/08/2023 11:57

Just back from France and breakfast at one place we stayed had homemade yogurt in individual pots.

So yesterday I dusted off my old machine and made some yogurt in little glass pots. Lost the instructions so followed some YouTube videos.

Had some this morning, perfectly set delicious yogurt. Dc won’t touch it so more for me!

Sounds perfectly rational to me Grin

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 31/08/2023 12:07

@CurlewKate as long as you promise not make a vomit inducing 'butter board with it, you are out of wanker territory Grin

winelove · 31/08/2023 12:13

I am growing my own flowers and have vases of fresh flowers round the house every week - can I join the wankey club.... have never made butter!

Sourcherriesarebest · 31/08/2023 12:20

Okay can people give me instructions or send me a reliable link for:

making yogurt instant pot
no-knead sourdough

tell me what cut flowers you successfully grow and

anyone know if the buttermaking works in a vitamix?

Thank you!

@off-I don't want to hear that about vanilla extract and I choose to believe tic-toc! I intend to put it in pretty bottles with hand designed labels as the wankiest Christmas presents ever.

Lol at wanky.

I’ll have some please

Caramelandsalt · 31/08/2023 12:31

Please 🙏 can I join ? I will try to think of something wankier than wanky to make , but in the meantime if you are using yellow label cream does the butter not go off on the date the cream would?? Or am I being a bit dense ?

I guess maybe it might make a difference to how long it lasts? But spoilage bacteria find it much harder to grow in butter than in cream, because butter has a much higher fat content — all of the sugar and protein has been removed, and most of the water, and most microorganisms don't thrive in that kind of environment. If you add salt, that also retards bacterial growth. The main thing that makes butter go bad is oxidation due to exposure to light and air, making it taste rancid.

off · 31/08/2023 12:41

Sorry, I should've said microorganisms and microbial, rather than bacteria and bacterial. Brain not firing on all cylinders today 🙄

off · 31/08/2023 12:49

I wonder if making cultured butter instead i.e. fermenting the cream with lactic cultures before making it into butter might extend the shelf-life. I've never noticed a difference in longevity between cultured and sweetcream butter personally, though, probably because I eat it all far too quickly for that to be a problem.

BethDuttonsTwin · 31/08/2023 12:51

Dd made butter topped with sea salt crystals, and baked bread rolls for part of her GCSE catering practical and got an L2M - equivalent old grade B. Her teacher was pretty impressed.

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 31/08/2023 13:00

Oooo!

Gatekeeper · 30/08/2023 12:57

I always make my own butter- I get 2 litre bottles of whipping cream for a quid and that makes 3 x 250 (ish) blocks of butter. No brainer!

Wow where can you get 2 litres of cream for £1?

EversoDetermined · 31/08/2023 13:35

I need to do this! I already make:

Yogurt (and strain it)
Mayonnaise
Jam
Chutney
Pickles
Sauerkraut
Sourdough

SurvivingNotThriving · 31/08/2023 13:36

Damn, I need to up my wank factor. Can't compete with some of these!

I did grow my own buckwheat, then thresh/winnow/toast/mill the grain to make buckwheat flour for blinis. Does that count?

ETA: And I grow my own quinoa, which surely earns me a few wanker-points.
