...and yesterday I made vanilla extract. I have never felt more like a parody of myself.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but how long does home made butter keep?

As long as normal butter IME. Like bought butter, though, it lasts longer if it's salted. And you can keep it in the freezer for ages.

BenoitsBriocheFeuilletee · 30/08/2023 14:00

I don’t remember much from my first primary school but I do remember making butter, twice.

We just put milk in a jam jar and shook it and shook it. I can still remember the yellow blob forming in a jar of liquid.

It was in the days of free school milk so perhaps it was using up leftovers. All milk was full-fat in those days.

What is the watery stuff that comes off the butter? Whey? Buttermilk? If its the latter you can made soda bread with it?

not sure, but I make pancakes with it, they come out really well.

tt9 · 30/08/2023 14:01

@Tessisme not long as its stupidly delicious

Tessisme · 30/08/2023 14:02

Thanks @off.

Oh dear. I should probably stay well clear then. I already have a butter habit😅

@mrsm43s I was given one of those and a pair of butter hands for Christmas a couple of years ago but haven’t got round to using it yet. How long does it take?

Quite a while, to be honest. And just at the point you think it's not working, it quite suddenly and rapidly turns into butter! It does give you a good workout!

The butter tastes delicious though, and it's great to be able to flavour it how you like.

When I was a kid, DM had a gadget for making 'cream' from unsalted butter and milk. I suppose that was in the days before skimmed milk and cream was relatively more expensive.

It wasn't very nice.

I used to do that too, Errol with a Bel cream maker! As did my mother. I thought it quite OK, actually, and cheaper than buying cream.

I love this and the rat biscuits especially.

I've made and make pretty much most things - but never butter despite watching endless TikTokz about it.

I'm finally going to do it because of you. And I have wanky salt crystals and not one but 3 butter dishes.

I regularly make pup cups for various dog birthdays. I've got 2 this week.

I often make hummus, pesto, focaccia, and occasionally pasta.

Butter here we come.

CurlewKate · 30/08/2023 17:23

I used my electric hand mixer- it took about 6-7 minutes? I might try the food processor next time.
I love making focaccia! So delicious and so much praise for so little effort....

I made butter with an early years class a few years ago - just put cream in a jar and then we all took turns shaking it. When it was butter we all shared it on a baguette.

I know - my brother family think I'm some kind of domestic goddess.

Mix, long prove in the fridge, take it out, cook - cover with wanky salt. About a minutes work and a lifetime of awe 😂

CurlewKate · 30/08/2023 17:39

@Shannith Have you made no knead bread in a Dutch Oven? That's kind of magic too!

A pet cow. Well actually I have 2!

Do you have a cow flap as well?

(Look up Goodness Gracious Me on Youtube. Great stuff.)

My problem with home made butter is the whey just goes everywhere in the final stages of whisking.

Edited

You can get mixing bowl splatter guards you use with an electric hand mixer. In fact one of the reviews on a Tala mixing bowl cover states it is useful in preventing mess when making butter.

I watched a complex video on doing a pretty darn on a moth hole in a cashmere sweater. It is like an apprenticeship scheme for the wanky club.

I am keenly propagating plants according to my latest insta heroine anyathegardenfairy so I think I def show the kind of commitment and potential required.

I do visible mending, I think that might be close?

I do yogurt, but strain (well I've made it 3 times...)

dearanon · 30/08/2023 22:54

Roast some garlic and chop parsely and add it in. It's delicious.

I'm sorry but you can't just announce that you have not one pet cow but two and not post a picture of said pet cows.

Cow tax please. 😁

Sgtmajormummy · 30/08/2023 23:05

I make my own jam (5:4 fruit to sugar and 7 minutes in the microwave), can I join the club?
Yesterday it was Lemon Curd, traditional style, so I might get onto the waiting list…

ClaraBourne · 31/08/2023 01:57

@NanTheWiser We had one of those too, it was the 'Arlington Cream maker' from the Ideal Home Exhibition (where else) and it was bloody hard work with a handle you had to press up and down for about an hour with milk and unslated butter. Only used at Christmas.

mathanxiety · 31/08/2023 04:37

I was in two minds about buying an Instant Pot until I realised I could make yogurt in it. You know your life is sad and weird when you look forward to the weekend because you'll wake up on Saturday and make your own yogurt.

CurlewKate · 30/08/2023 12:39

@Alycidon I haven't tried it yet- I'm still basking in my cleverness. It is half the price though.

Half the price, or twice the price? If it’s half the price I might try it with the cost of butter just now.
did you use a blender to whip the cream or do it by hand 💪🏻

NeverGuessWho · 31/08/2023 07:09

Marking my place whilst desperately trying to come up with an idea of how and why I might be allowed to join the wanky thread.

That Kilner butter making whatsit is also on my Christmas list.

sashh · 31/08/2023 09:25

I watched someone (Atomic shrimp if you are interested) on YouTube making butter by sort of folding cream with his fingers, it only took a couple of mins.

@twinkletoesimnot are they small or is your house huge? Are they housetrained?

CurlewKate · 31/08/2023 10:28

@Glovesandscarf Half the price. £1.20 for the cream.
