...and yesterday I made vanilla extract. I have never felt more like a parody of myself.

I have a jersey house cow and have spent the summer making butter and ice cream and yoghurt. Cheese next!

I need a jersey house cow in my life!

No, that's completely normal.

Straining it through muslin to make Greek-style might qualify.

DarkPsy · 30/08/2023 12:55

I picked lavender from the garden, dried it out and made potpourri. Can I be in the wanky club?

WholeWorldsPivot · 30/08/2023 12:56

@EverybodyLTB if I make butter but nobody I went to school with thirty years ago sees it, did I really make butter? 🙄

I LOVE this! 😂and you do have a point...

Gatekeeper · 30/08/2023 12:57

I always make my own butter- I get 2 litre bottles of whipping cream for a quid and that makes 3 x 250 (ish) blocks of butter. No brainer!

CurlewKate · 30/08/2023 12:58

@ScottBakula "Peeps round wanky corner , I make my own yoghurt, am I allowed on this thread ?"

On probation. You have ten days to make labneh.

I made dog biscuits once...

That's nothing. I made rat biscuits in bulk, because I was dissatisfied with the nutritional content of industrial rat food. I think that's probably peak wank.

Sourcherriesarebest · 30/08/2023 13:00

I watched a complex video on doing a pretty darn on a moth hole in a cashmere sweater. It is like an apprenticeship scheme for the wanky club.

I am keenly propagating plants according to my latest insta heroine anyathegardenfairy so I think I def show the kind of commitment and potential required.

I actually own one of these https://www.kilnerjar.co.uk/0025348-butter-churner/

We make wanky butter with middle class salt with alarming regularity.

Oh thank you for this , it's going on my Christmas list!

I was a bit confused because at first I thought you meant the poison pellets for rats to eat and was thinking 'but why would they need good nutrition before they die, is that some sort of kindly Last Supper scenario for rats?'

There's something almost classically perverse about that scenario.

No, I just had a lot of pet rats, and they could be surprisingly fussy (well, except for one girl who would eat anything and everything, whether it belonged to her or not — trying to put her on a diet would've just resulted in everyone else wasting away while she continued to aspire towards the spherical). The muesli-type pet food mixes tended to contain some things rats can't really eat, and several things they would leave in the bottom of the bowl while looking hopefully at me. The special "selective feeder" lab-block type rat food would just get ignored as though it wasn't even food. And neither of them seemed nutritionally particularly satisfactory. That's how I ended up puréeing cheap bits of meat and offcuts, as well as various other nutritionally-balanced ingredients, to bake into salt-free crunchy meal biscuits for the picky little fuckers.

Oooh harsh @CurlewKate ... [wanders off to surreptitiously look up labneh...]

What is the watery stuff that comes off the butter? Whey? Buttermilk? If its the latter you can made soda bread with it?

AnotherOneGone · 30/08/2023 13:17

I need to get on the butter making band wagon - there is a big Morrisons near me that often has yellow stickered whipping cream - £1 for 2 litres (unused from the cake filling in the bakery I guess).

So at 36% fat content, I should get about 750g of butter, so 3 packs for £1.

SpanielsMatter · 30/08/2023 13:18

I once gave DH the job of whipping cream for a pavlova. I’d put in the icing sugar, he did such a bad job he turned the lovely cream into sugary butter …

I was not pleased. He’d literally tickled it with a whisk for ages.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/08/2023 13:21

DD and I used to make dog biscuits, but as they were basically crunchy wholemeal and cheese we ate quite a lot of them ourselves. I think we liked them more than the dog did.

Moonshine5 · 30/08/2023 13:23

Have always pretentious 'ghee,' made for us in this household, never gave it a thought😂

You win! Proper milk and cream...!

When I was a kid, DM had a gadget for making 'cream' from unsalted butter and milk. I suppose that was in the days before skimmed milk and cream was relatively more expensive.

It wasn't very nice.

The Kenwood Chef attachment per chance? I would like one just because the only time I want cream is 6pm on a Sunday night when the shops are shut 😀 But I have also heard it wasn't great.

CurlewKate · 30/08/2023 12:39

@Alycidon I haven't tried it yet- I'm still basking in my cleverness. It is half the price though.

My sister made loads of butter when Morrisons reduced their cream right down to 9p for a large pot. She bought 12 pots of the reduced cream and went on about her economy butter she made for weeks. She still looks out for reduced cream.

You can do that just with a ordinary mixer.

TheProvincialLady · 30/08/2023 13:40

@mrsm43s I was given one of those and a pair of butter hands for Christmas a couple of years ago but haven’t got round to using it yet. How long does it take?

Tessisme · 30/08/2023 13:41

Maybe this is a stupid question, but how long does home made butter keep?

DupontsYellowDressingGown · 30/08/2023 13:46

Keep the buttermilk for pancakes!
