Please don't say "his hobby"...

.....it's either golf or cycling. And have if a partner who does one of these things will definitely not "out" you. Promise.

I'll probably just say what I like.

Rowgtfc72 · 30/08/2023 04:40

Dhs hobby is doing up old cars.
He's recently bought one and a half minis.
No more complaining about the rain and lying on the wet floor- this one actually fits in the carpeted garage.
He also has lego. Much lego. But it has been consigned to a large table in the loft out of the way.

MinnieMountain · 30/08/2023 05:31

Mine plays hockey.
I remember someone on here mentioning fencing is identifying and she proved her point by getting a friend of mine on a few details.

VeloVixen · 30/08/2023 05:35

Well my dh base jumps which probably is outing, alongside other details such as my job and kids ages.

AngelaoftheNorth · 30/08/2023 06:58

Hahahaha if only my DH was obsessed with such a mainstream hobby. His would be totally, totally outing to name. Sigh.

PurBal · 30/08/2023 07:01

DH likes trail running and occasionally competes in ultramarathons. Do you know who I am?

MelonsOnSaleAgain · 30/08/2023 07:02

Another car one here. And photography. Expensive hobbies. But the photography one means great holiday and family pics!

Luckily for him I quite like cars too. So his next project will be one for me 🤣

Random789 · 30/08/2023 07:15

I completely reject the golf/cycling hobby binary. I can think of loads of leisure activities that are neither golf nor cycling (nor anywhere on a spectrum between golf and cycling, for that matter). Gold panning (upthread) is a fabulous example of a hobby that smashes the golf/cycling binary. Other examples of non-binary hobbyists include my neighbour who takes his terriers ratting.

Mine does 5K runs and the Round Table (like Brownies for Dads).

Love the 'like brownies for dads' analogy!!

Beezknees · 30/08/2023 07:26

My ex (DS's dad) scuba dives.

BarrelOfOtters · 30/08/2023 07:37

My dh mountain bikes with a group (one of whom is a woman…shock!). But it’s not a sport I’d say. And the rest of his life revolves around the dog. He can also name and give date of first manufacture of any car. My those motorway drives just fly along now.

I garden, it’s a hobby.

SallyWD · 30/08/2023 07:38

My DH has a hobby which is neither of those things.

ComeTheSpringLobelia · 30/08/2023 07:49

My DH has a hobby he is very intense about. Its not cycling or golf thank god. But it takes place in only a few parts of the UK and if you put that in a post and then in other posts mention your Dcs and what age they are and roughly an issue they are facing in school then in another ask for recommendations for a city break then it might be that someone who knows you twigs.

i this week realised that a MNetter was a friend of mine simply because she mentioned a dog walk she had taken that had some identifying features in it (not landmarks, more vague than that) and then she was on another thread I was on talking about a recipe she had made recently. I messaged her to say I had spotted her and gave her my user name as well we had a laugh about it offline. Thankfully it was fairly innocuous.

Squidlette · 30/08/2023 07:53

Is there a separate category for reluctant hobby? I do the garden and try to make it look nice, but I don't really enjoy it. It just needs to be done. Same as DIY. Some people love doing it, but in my house it's a bastard necessity. Same as the gym, actually. Don't really want to go; don't really have time to go, but I like to eat.

daisychain01 · 30/08/2023 07:56

CurlewKate · 29/08/2023 18:46

@cctvrec wow! I want to know all about the gold panning now! Does he find much? I suppose it must be in Wales.....Damn, I suppose you can't answer that!
I do have a hobby myself- the only reason I wouldn't mention is it because I would DIE of embarassment if anybody outside a tiny circle found out!

I call double-standards.

You start a thread having a go at people for their"stealth hobbying" DHs and here you are stealth hobbying yourself Grin

I love gardening but have friends who just view it as outdoor cleaning..

those aren’t hobbies, they are chores. I view the gym as a chore.

@daisychain01 "You start a thread having a go at people for their"stealth hobbying" DHs and here you are stealth hobbying yourself"

To be fair, it was stealthing by throwing a tea towel over an elephant that I was talking about! I reckon stealthing because of a desire to avoid death by terminal embarassment is OK......

OP posts:
Random789 · 30/08/2023 08:23

Lol at throwing a tea towel over an elephant. I think I will take that up as my hobby. I will do it like a matador draping their cape on a bull.

CurlewKate · 30/08/2023 08:40

@Random789 If you could make the elephant disappear there's a way of monetising your hobby....

OP posts:
Ohdearnamechange · 30/08/2023 08:46

My DH's hobbies are largely MDMA, drinking to excess and watching oiled up permatanned men wrestling. So I think without the name change I'll stick with 'hobby' 😆

He can date any old crime series we're watching....that's 1986, you know that because they changed the wing mirrors on the Focus that year.

Where is all this info stored?!

In the same space women use for storing useful info like birthdates, anniversary dates, DC school holiday dates, dentists appointments, Christmas is coming better start planning plans and the like. Men don't store that info, so the space is free.

AuntieStella · 30/08/2023 08:54

I think talking about hobbies is now a MN cliche, to the extent it's worth preserving.

I assume it came about because no-one wants to admit publicly that their DH/DP is a MAMIL.

But I like to think they're all Morris dancers, or bog snorkellers or dwile flunkers.

RavingStyle · 30/08/2023 09:02

OfficerChurlish · 30/08/2023 00:57

Mine sculpts life-size replicas of the Lewis chess pieces out of cave-aged Comté. It sounds harmless, but it's surprisingly expensive, especially post-Brexit.

(If anyone here recognises him, please don't blow my cover!)

🤣🤣

birdsongismyfave · 30/08/2023 09:03

My husband likes fox hunting, only he is the fox and the hounds and horses chase him. He runs around the countryside chased by people on horses in red coats blowing horns.
