Please don't say "his hobby"...

.....it's either golf or cycling. And have if a partner who does one of these things will definitely not "out" you. Promise.

OP posts:
DinnaeFashYersel · 29/08/2023 19:21

Mine does 5K runs and the Round Table (like Brownies for Dads).

WhyEffingBother · 29/08/2023 19:26

What about the poor woman on here ages ago who's husband's hobby was off out chasing gooses or some shit. That's pretty outing!

DoraSpenlow · 29/08/2023 19:30

ZolaBudd · 29/08/2023 18:27

or it somsething sad like model trains or cosplay or clay pigeon

Why are model trains sad? Mine has just spent ages building a model steam train from flat pieces of metal. His engineering skills are amazing and he really has had to use his brain and work out problems.

His other hobbies are restoring classic motorcycles and repairing antique watches. Far more productive than endlessly cycling around the roads or sat on his backside 'gaming'.

CurlewKate · 29/08/2023 19:33

Just messaged my dp to tell him he has to start gold panning immediately- but he's currently somewhere in the middle of the Channel, so probably won't get it! Of well, I'm off to spend an hour on my embarrassing hobby....

I had a cousin who could have referred to her DHs hobby. Also his owls...

And his merlins?

OP posts:
ErrolTheDragon · 29/08/2023 19:42

Quite possibly.

Bananalanacake · 29/08/2023 19:50

My DH hobby is buying Lego sets and piling them up in the hall. We are getting a storage unit.

Can't you build them into a table or something?

BakingBeanz · 29/08/2023 19:57

Totally agree, op😂 I always want to reply “just say golf”

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 29/08/2023 19:57

Volunteering with their local steam railway def. takes up loads of some blokes’ time, but I don’t recall anyone on here confessing that their dh is an addict.

UneFoisAuChalet · 29/08/2023 19:57

CurlewKate · 29/08/2023 18:18

I agree-mine is into playing the guitar, being a Scout leader and sailing, but whenever someone on here says "he goes out to do his hobby every Sunday morning" you just know it's one of those! I was cruelly amused by someone today carefully saying "his hobby" throughout a long post then accidentally typing "golf"....

I don't think I've ever said "hobby" about an adult's activities.....

😂 me too ! Guffawed when gold was mentioned.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 29/08/2023 20:00

Why? What's wrong with it. Why is 'activities' any better. I have hobbies. So does dh. None of them are cycling or golf. I'm baffled as to why I shouldn't refer to them as such. Maybe you should start another one of those 'Does anyone else have an irrational hatred of a particular, inoffensive word?' threads.

Sadik · 29/08/2023 20:05

Does no-one elses DP play cricket? (Assuming it's not outing due to the number of men - and women - in the cricket club!)

I made it Very Clear before we moved in together that I was happy to support his sporting activities from a safe distance only and I would not be coming along to watch Grin

I’ve never heard of this. I’ve just googled it and there’s a women’s version which I’m going to look into.

I’m loving this thread as some of these hobbies (Lego, board games, metal detecting etc) are right up my street and I didn’t think other adults would enjoy them much or you could call them a hobby.

LifeIsShitJustNow · 29/08/2023 20:17

The problem is when you say HIS hobby, knowing it’s not cycling/golf/football/whatever but something that would be quite easily outing and then no one believes you.
Or goes into a contest around the fact it’s not that unusual etc…

LifeIsShitJustNow · 29/08/2023 20:22

Whippetlovely · 29/08/2023 19:19

Yes and I don’t get this whole if I say such and such it will out me. It absolutely won’t! It’s ridiculous. We are all strangers on the internet I don’t sit here trying to figure out if I know the people writing on here as I’m damn sure no one I know is sad enough to use mumsnet (just me!) I have a mate who uses Quora which is much cooler so she obviously isn’t embarrassed to admit that.

You’d be surprised.
An unusual hobby is one that is remembered. Even if there are quite a few people doing that hobby in the U.K., add a few more bits of information (children, a special event etc…)and it’s easy to recognise someone.
Seeing that about 1 millions people come on MN each day, it’s not crazy to be worried about being outed - like many people have experienced before

Squidlette · 29/08/2023 20:23

I think sometimes though, although it's not outing in one post, it might be if the op has posted other stuff under the same name. I try to keep different names for different topics, so I can't be connected, because I'm a chronic oversharer and forget that I can change details.

LadyAddle · 29/08/2023 20:43

@Whatsthepoint1234 😂- though a lute would actually be quite modest, a fine big instrument.

True. Not long ago I was reading a post and it just read like a friends speaking style. I did a name search and it was definitely her. There was nothing obvious in the original post, pure style of writing, but details on other posts were undeniable.

AllMyExesWearRolexes · 29/08/2023 20:52

Why is it that adults do "hobbies" but children do "activities"?

Whyishewearingasombero · 29/08/2023 21:00

DH doesnt do golf or cycling but spends hours looking through Autotrader, just looking at cars. We're not in the process of buying a car, haven't been or will be for years.

Mine does this with motorbikes on ebay. He can look all he wants; he's not having one.

C1N1C · 29/08/2023 21:07

I drive. Cyclists are the enemy.

And to me, golfing is the human equivalent of throwing a ball for a dog and chasing after it. I just don't get it.

I know, no-one asked for my opinion :).

Whyishewearingasombero · 29/08/2023 21:08

He can date any old crime series we're watching....that's 1986, you know that because they changed the wing mirrors on the Focus that year.

Where is all this info stored?!
