.....it's either golf or cycling. And have if a partner who does one of these things will definitely not "out" you. Promise.

OP posts:
TheAloe · 29/08/2023 21:09

Or fishing, fuckinhell fishing…… ended my parent’s marriage 🤣

Passivhaus · 29/08/2023 21:13

Was your dad jealous your mum caught a bigger trout than him?

TheAloe · 29/08/2023 21:16

@Passivhaus

Not quite 🤣 but when you’re out the house for consecutive 12 hour days fishing and then you find a box of maggots next to the cheese in the fridge I think that was the final straw for her 😂.

Whippetlovely · 29/08/2023 21:16

I highly doubt 1million people come on mumsnet that would be 1 in 7 ppl in the country and half of them or more are children and men. I bet it’s more like 100k so the chance of being ‘outed’ is very slim. Even so it’s not like forchan nobody’s confessing to murders! Now that would be interesting 🤨

MajesticWhine · 29/08/2023 21:20

DH's hobby is triathlon, it's three times easier for him to escape from his family.

Well you're wrong in terms of my dh, my ds, my db, my dbil (x 3), so not sure where you are getting your stats from.

The 'outing' thing comes from the fact that in one thread you might refer to a hobby, but in another you refer to the area of the country you live, and in another you mention your car and in another you mention how many dc you have and in another you mention something to do with your work, etc etc, and it is the sum of the information that then outs people.

Why does it bother you so much ? Confused

User174398521 · 29/08/2023 21:27

DHs hobbies are cycling, fishing and running, he also watches all three on TV, upstairs thank goodness.

Yellowsubmarineunderthesea · 29/08/2023 21:28

I'm amused at people calling cycling a hobby - I cyle and run 3/4 times a week but I purely see it as a method of fitness. I kinda always thought of hobbies as things like stamp collecting, model making, that sort of thing.

I always think a hobby is something you make time to do because you enjoy it. That's why my university personal statement was so hard. Hobbies: um, reading, going to the pub, playing pool (in the pub), watching my mate's band in the pub.

As an parent, hobbies are much more important because you have to ruthlessly make time for it. I'm divided on the gym side of it. I see exercise more like cleaning your teeth, than a hobby
But then I guess, you choose which exercise to do. Dh's choice would be cycling. Mine is running. I suppose it's become a hobby. But I'd say playing an instrument is my hobby, because I do it because I just want to, and it makes me feel happy, not for any other reason.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 29/08/2023 22:30

Mine's worse - gaming.

Mind you mine is too. Neither of us use it as an excuse to abstain from family life!

JaneJeffer · 29/08/2023 22:55

You are wrong but I can't tell you what it is obviously because next thing you'll be stalking me and I'll end up on the front page of the Daily Mail.

cctvrec · 29/08/2023 23:00

CurlewKate · 29/08/2023 18:46

@cctvrec wow! I want to know all about the gold panning now! Does he find much? I suppose it must be in Wales.....Damn, I suppose you can't answer that!
I do have a hobby myself- the only reason I wouldn't mention is it because I would DIE of embarassment if anybody outside a tiny circle found out!

Nah it's no longer legal to pan for gold in Wales. Its Scotland we're in. The kids are British Champions too cos it's a big super serious thing (to panners 😂... and their mums lugging the pans around)
Definitely beats cycling and golf by a mile though.

cctvrec · 29/08/2023 23:12

I've stated my husband's pretty niche hobby on here. My location is on other posts. The fact my kids win at this hobby has been mentioned elsewhere. It would be super easy to figure out cctvrec is me if you know me. Keeping hobbies vague is to stop people thinking they know the poster then with the help of advance searches, confirming it.
This username is my 'hide nothing' username where anyone that knows me would be able to tell in a heartbeat. My other 100 usernames are vague as fuck with constantly changing details. Even my own mother wouldn't know it's me because my 3 kids are sometimes 2, or one. Or different sexes. Sometimes I live in Scotland, other times I'm English. When I moan about my -possibly on MN- sister I change up the details just in case. My neighbour has a dog. Other times I do and theirs is a cat. The gist is the same though.

So when someone says hobby, they don't want us to know and I'm cool with that.

Some posters begin an op about their other halfs hobby, which can be as basic as cycling or golf ect but some ops think that by saying that, then people or some people will know who their dh is etc

UsingChangeofName · 29/08/2023 23:52

Plus, of course, it often has nothing to do with what the question or rant is, or what the poster is asking for advice about, but you get some posters on here, who just start frothing at the very idea that a man might play football. So, by mentioning football, in some posters' eyes the man is therefore automatically wrong, whereas if he were spending the same amount of time learning Spanish, or running a BB Company, or tending his allotment, then those posters respond differently. If the OP is asking about the time spent out of the house, it makes sense to keep it neutral.
No idea why the OP thinks it is always golf or cycling though.

You might want to check your maths ... 1 in 70 would be more like it. Plus there are posters from all over the world here too not just U.K. there's lots in US and Oz that I see posting regularly.

greenspaces4peace · 30/08/2023 00:22

my dh is an apiarist and the outlay of money for equipment and the time spent out in the field...sometimes i say golf would be better.
his reply is that at least people pay for the honey.
the problem is the small income generated is spent on more equipment or supplies.
i don't generally complain i too get to enjoy the honey, am the chief bottle wash and sales manager.

Harpsichordd · 30/08/2023 00:34

My DP's hobby is Wikipedia, specifically any sort of historical treaty or obscure law... It very occasionally comes in useful for the odd pub quiz question.

CattingAbout · 30/08/2023 00:39

When I read a thread of the type OP is referring to, I mentally replace 'his hobby' with 'dogging' every time it comes up.

Makes the thread more interesting.

DiscoBeat · 30/08/2023 00:42

Not just those, my husband has a different hobby entirely!

GrumpyPanda · 30/08/2023 00:54

I used to agree with you until the day someone I know IRL through a shared hobby (which is not an unusual one) outed herself to me on here by mentioning one specific thing about our group. Now I refer to it as my hobby.

That's harmless though. Somebody I knew irl trough a shared activity was also on an anonymous board for the same activity and very easily recognizable (US expat couple abroad, etc). All well, until somebody on that board started a thread about piercings and said acquaintance chimed in, admitting to piercings in one particular delicate male location. Thankfully not up for verification irl...

OfficerChurlish · 30/08/2023 00:57

Mine sculpts life-size replicas of the Lewis chess pieces out of cave-aged Comté. It sounds harmless, but it's surprisingly expensive, especially post-Brexit.

(If anyone here recognises him, please don't blow my cover!)

AutumnalPumpkin · 30/08/2023 01:02

Oh god, mine changes hobby every few months, so I would never know what to address it as from one month to the next 🤣

They are sports imo. Hobbies are things like stamp collecting and aeroplane spotting.

Every time I see a post about DH and his hobby, I get the urge to post, did you mean to say dh's sport.
