Woolworths pic&mix

When they closed, why did no other company 'steal' the pic&mix off the suppliers and start selling it?

And why has no one tried to do similar since? Pic&mix since has been shit when compared to woolies.

Did woolworths make them all themselves?

Why is this a 2:17am question?

Why not ?

I saw some sweets that looked like Woollies sweets on Facebook and it made me wonder why it all just disappeared.

Just interested why it would cross your mind this time of the morning

Bluesheeps · 24/08/2023 02:22

Don’t get me wrong, I used to love a bloody decent pic n mix….but now I think of it, it is a bit grim

LoveThisUsername · 24/08/2023 02:25

Please do not tarnish the hallowed woollies pic&mix with germophobia. Humankind survived the 80s/90s.

It’s funny that I used to love Woollies pick n mix, always get one at cinema ( even though the sweets all taste a bit fake) yet have never been tempted by tescos. Tescos pick n mix just seems wrong,

Bluesheeps · 24/08/2023 02:32

Ok fine. I take it back. But still….I’m 30 years older now and I don’t want toddlers dribbling on my white mice

BusterGonad · 24/08/2023 02:42

BHS did pick n mix as do Wilkos.

Devilsmommy · 24/08/2023 03:12

Yeah Wilko's pic n mix probably closer to woolies one than any other😁

zen1 · 24/08/2023 03:17

Poundland near me do a Candy King pic n mix as do Tesco.

Why is this a 2:17am question?

This is the perfect question that fills your head at 2.17…

I am awake anxious about Ds’s gcse results - this is definitely more constructive to ponder over

I have seen it done at wilko’s - Lego land but you are right no one did it quite like Woolies

curaçao · 24/08/2023 03:49

Supermarkets did them until fairly recently

HappiDaze · 24/08/2023 03:50

There are some great online Pick and mix companies

We use one called something like Sweetzy

I can remember the pick and mix counter at woolies being a whole counter that you could walk around and the staff were in the middle. It always seemed to be topped up so it looked like huge piles of sweets.
Choosing your favourites could take ages.

Aintgotthatswing · 24/08/2023 04:15

It was wonderful. My favorites were the liquorish sandwiches and a chocolate covered coconut fondant thing in a pale blue wrapper. I've never seen these sweets anywhere since.

GlobetrottingPercy · 24/08/2023 04:29

This is the bag I remember….

I imagine a lot got stolen too either by children eating them without their parents realising or from people having a quick flying saucer on the way past (although, if you were going to steal a sweet and have it on your conscience, the flying saucer would be a terrible, wasted choice, no?)

Oooh, I used to work on Pic and Mix at Woolworths in the Manchester Piccadilly store many years ago. Best Saturday job I ever had!

Vickythevan63 · 24/08/2023 06:30

There are still some very good pic n mix stalls in markets, depending on where you live. We have one close to us in Cheshire, it definitely rivals that from Woolies!

(I am 60 and attribute my love of sweets to Woolies PnM and the brilliant market stalls in the Yorkshire town that I grew up in!).

Sherwil16 · 24/08/2023 06:41

I worked in Aldgate Woolworth's (long gone) and we called it 'Pick and Nick'!

Hottoffeesauce · 24/08/2023 07:06

I loved the Woolies Pick & Mix. Quite a bit of it was consumed/nicked upstairs, in the stockroom of the Woolies I worked in! Our IKEA has stopped their pick and mix now, too!

Cotswoldbee · 24/08/2023 07:18

Went to a show the other year (county show type of thing) and there was a large tent which had an amazing P&M selection. 😁
Picked up a paper bag and put in a few of all our favourites.
Went to pay, they weighed it and it came to just over £20! 🤯
Handed over the money but some how I just couldn't enjoy them after that. ☹️

In all fairness to them, when I looked around and the price WAS shown however I think £4.99 / 100g was a tad too much (this was pre-Covid so a few years ago).
