Woolworths pic&mix

When they closed, why did no other company 'steal' the pic&mix off the suppliers and start selling it?

And why has no one tried to do similar since? Pic&mix since has been shit when compared to woolies.

Did woolworths make them all themselves?

Why is this a 2:17am question?

Duh, cravings!

Those strawberry cables... 🥰

MaidOfSteel · 24/08/2023 07:31

I have never found a decent substitute for Woolies pick n mix Acid Drops. Ever. Still trying, even 30+ years on.

catwithflowers · 24/08/2023 07:58

I worked as a Saturday Girl for Woolies for two years, back in the eighties. I was either on the pick and mix or the make up counter (Rimmel and Miners 🥰). Pick and mix was fun as I often had to go up to the stockroom in one of those old fashioned service lifts where you closed a gate manually and could see the lift shaft as you went upstairs.

I remember enjoying a few sweeties while I was up there 😂😂. My favourites were a raspberry coconut concoction, covered in dark chocolate and in a dark pink wrapper. I think they were called raspberry ruffles!

We have a local sweet shop chain here called Mollies that sells a great range of pick and Mix but it's so expensive. Other sweets etc in the shop aren't so bad but if you fill a bag of pick and mix it can easily come to a tenner. Def miss Woolies pick and mix. As the choice these days is tesco or poindland with a small limited range or somewhere that I just can't justify the price.

LoveThisUsername · 24/08/2023 09:06

I know wilkos/supermarkets/poundshops/cinema etc do Pick'n'mix, but its nowhere near woolies pic&mix.

I wasn't allowed woolies pick and mix but used to look at it longingly (told it was too expensive).

But today we've enjoyed tescos and the cinema.

I've almost been tempted by market stalls /at events but they're insanely expensive!

Needmorelego · 24/08/2023 09:28

@LoveThisUsername errr....they do and have done for years. When Woolies closed the Pick n Mix was supplied by a company called Candy King. It was also being sold at the same time in other retailers like Wilko, Poundstretchers and supermarkets. Shops like B+M, The Range, Poundland etc sell Candy King Pick n Mix.
It isn't hard to get "Woolies" Pick n Mix.
(Former Woolies employee - so I know a bit about Pick n Mix)

LoveThisUsername · 24/08/2023 09:33

This new candy king shite is nowhere near real woolies pic&mix.

Candy king don't sell any sweets you can't get anywhere else in bags.

@LoveThisUsername sorry to ruin your memories but some of the older products sold in the Pick n Mix were stopped being sold due to hygiene reasons.
Anything loose (ie not in a wrapper) and especially if it had nuts frequently had to be removed from sale due to "infestation" 🐜🤢🤮

Theborder · 24/08/2023 09:37

Wilkos did though? And now that’s closing. Had this exact same conversation with my husband last night. Off to get the kids a pick and mix today before it closes.

Theborder · 24/08/2023 09:37

Our local Wilko does have that but a lot bigger/more choice. Best it’s gonna get in 2023.

OMG, what a dream Saturday job!! 😍

I guess you've never been to Wilkos

pepino · 24/08/2023 10:05

Tescos, Wilkos and other shops still do pick and mix. As well as cinemas who charge and absolute bomb for the same stuff as willies.

pepino · 24/08/2023 10:06

Lol woolies not willies!

watermeloncougar · 24/08/2023 10:44

You can still get Pick n Mix in loads of places. Granted, it's not exactly the same as Woolies but to be fair it's probably slightly more hygienic. I just remember Woolies as having been touched/ dribbled on/ nose picked over by about a million kids! Certain sweets aren't available any more but that's the same with any kind of confectionery... items get discontinued (usually just when they become your fave.)

I was Saturday girl too although usually stuck on the tills, although sometimes I got a reprieve in the holidays and got to go on the pick and mix. I thought most of it was wrapped, so not a hygiene issue.

I was terrified of those lifts!

JohnnyYenSetHimselfOnFireAgain · 24/08/2023 11:38

I was thinking about Woolies pick and mix only last night, too. In particular, Pascall's Fruit Bonbons. I loved them but can't get them now. 🙁

😮😂

ChessieFL · 24/08/2023 11:46

@catwithflowers you can still buy raspberry ruffles - online or places like B&M.

FinnRustle · 24/08/2023 11:51

My favourites were the dome-shaped strawberry and orange creams that came in a twisty wrapper that looked like a strawberry/orange when you flattened it out. It was so pretty - one of those lovely 'doesn't need to be as nice as it is' touches that you don't seem to get any more.

You are my kind of confection consumer.
I bloody loved Woolies pick n mix BUT as my family owned a newsagents and I knew what vile things could happen to uncovered sweets I only ever got pre wrapped options. Strawberry, orange and mint creams, rum truffles, raspberry ruffles ect.
I would seriously advise people not to ever buy unwrapped pick n mix.

FinnRustle · 24/08/2023 12:20

I also loved the old Dairy Milk and Yorkie bars, with the top paper wrapper, then the foil around the chocolate like an underskirt. That's what used to make chocolate feel like a treat when I was little - not just the chocolate itself, but the prettiness of the wrapping, and the engraving across each square that you could make appear by running your finger over the foil. The colours in a Fry's Five Centres, the double layer of foil and cellophane in a tin of Quality Street.

Now it just feels like everything's been reduced to bland variations on Dairy Milk.

Crawleyperson · 24/08/2023 12:30

I went to Wilkos earlier as I'd promised my son a pick n mix. Sadly due them going bust most of it was empty, so he couldn't get one there. We went to Poundland instead.

I try not think about the hygiene side of them. We're still alive, so that's a plus!

I will miss Wilkos. Sad
