Woolworths pic&mix

LoveThisUsername · 24/08/2023 02:17

When they closed, why did no other company 'steal' the pic&mix off the suppliers and start selling it?

And why has no one tried to do similar since? Pic&mix since has been shit when compared to woolies.

Did woolworths make them all themselves?

Anyone remember the 5 and 10 penny bags? Like a mini pick and mix as you'd stand there in the corner pointing to the sweets saying 'one of those please ... One of those...' as rge shopkeeper filled tge little paper bag. You could also buy 2oz or a quarter of sweets chosen from one of the screw top sweet jars lining the shelves. Aah, the good old days!

JusthereforXmas · 24/08/2023 13:58

Wilko & poundland do pick & mix.

GardeningIdiot · 24/08/2023 14:02

Love your posts, @FinnRustle. This is so true:

It was so pretty - one of those lovely 'doesn't need to be as nice as it is' touches that you don't seem to get any more.

Wizzoh · 24/08/2023 14:02

This had made me want pink mice 😋

Just interested why it would cross your mind this time of the morning

Maybe OP is working a very quiet nightshift and musing trivial stuff yo pass the time.

Why is this a 2:17am question?

Exactly the sort of question one thinks of at those hours

Why is this a 2:17am question?

Not everyone works 9-5.

OMG, what a dream Saturday job!! 😍

Agreed🤩 this thread is making me so nostalgic!

LoveThisUsername · 24/08/2023 15:09

People saying Wilko & poundland etc do Pick & Mix, theirs are just shit and nowhere near as good as woollies' was.

Well said! Wouldn’t touch Wilko, Tescos or Poundland with a barge pole 😆

Needmorelego · 24/08/2023 15:16

@LoveThisUsername it's the same stuff to what Woolies was selling when they closed (Candy King) but obviously different to what they sold in the past. I began working there in the 90s and there were a lot of different items. As I said upthread - many stopped being sold to the 🤢🤮 hygiene reasons. I remember some fantastic "penny sweets" sold at my local newsagents in the 80s. But looking back at how unhygienic it was is a bit of a gross memory.

cocksstrideintheevening · 24/08/2023 15:17

Willis and Tesco do it, and the cinema if you're into daylight robbery.

Needmorelego · 24/08/2023 15:21

@LoveThisUsername the nearest to the "old style" Pick n Mix that I have found you can get is usually sold at independent food market type places. If you go to a food fair or farmers market you might be able to get some.

anniegun · 24/08/2023 15:24

Wilko took it on and it didn't end well for them

Needmorelego · 24/08/2023 15:32

@anniegun Wilko didn't "take it on" - they were selling it when Woolies were still around.
They both sold it at the same time.

@LoveThisUsername yeah....no.....the Pick n Mix was barely part of Woolies down fall 😕

Eviebeans · 24/08/2023 03:57

I can remember the pick and mix counter at woolies being a whole counter that you could walk around and the staff were in the middle. It always seemed to be topped up so it looked like huge piles of sweets.
Choosing your favourites could take ages.

I was a Saturday girl in the 80s and worked behind the pick n mix in exactly this set up. I'd rather have been in the record bit though because that was cool 😂

Floppyfrog · 25/08/2023 07:02

COVID was probably due to the downfall of Woolworths. If we'd had some germ sharing over pick and mix we'd have all had herd immunity before the virus had even been named.

Woolies shut a long time before covid.

Woolies was the best, until I found a holy grail sweet shop while roadtripping in Italy. It made even woolies look shit. I bought bags full and then threw up all the way home.

BaaCode · 25/08/2023 12:34

Whenever I come across sweet shops that sell sweets in those big jars all lined up on shelves, I have to go in, it's like my legs take control of my mind.
Then I spend ages agonising over what I want, like I'm six years old with my Saturday spend.
I loved a woollies pick & mix too. Coconut mushrooms. Mmmm.
