No idea why the last one was taken down, but for anyone who wants to continue the discussion on Letby, I’m starting a new thread here.

I’m 100% sure she’s guilty, but I’m still massively struggling to comprehend why on earth she did it.

WHY did she keep the paperwork and notes, I find that really confusing she would write and keep her diary notes.

Yes I have wondered this too. Apparently she owned a shredder and didn’t keep other important information like bank statements.

She knew that she was under suspicion by that stage so why on earth hadn’t she destroyed them.

Again not saying she is innocent (feel like I need to add that disclaimer on ever post!) it just makes no sense to me.

Arrogance perhaps? A feeling she was above everyone else and untouchable?

I think we keep saying she appeared so normal because we would expect her to be a loner without friends. We want to hear that there were signs, that teachers will come foward and say they remember her stamping on insects or behaving cruelly. There is none of that( it appears so far.) So it makes it even harder for us to try to make sense of the already unthinkable.

Exactly, Ive said this before as well but its not what she looked like physically, its that she does not have any of the markers you usually see for serious criminals/anti social perpetrators, she seems to have had a settled up bringing, no MH issues, no SEN or other disorders, no physical health disorders, doesnt live in poverty, hasnt been in trouble with the law before, hasnt had abuse/trauma in her history, has friends and a social life, has interests outside the home which are in line with the norms in society.

It's almost like the evidence is that overwhelming that it's automatic assumed that this person is the guilty one, yet like you say why would you do x

Obviously to be clear, she's guilty as charged. I was just adding to the @bluegreenandcoral perspective.

6 months segregation? Doubt it, there's rules and targets around that

And 'suicide watch' differs vastly to what people actually think it is. She's already spent years in prison on remand, she knows the system by now

This is what I read. Upday on my android phone - I didn't realise it was the Mirror. So yea...maybe not the most reliable.

anonymousamy · 21/08/2023 23:36

We’re so conditioned to believe that serious criminals will have been in trouble with the law before, or that they’ve had traumatic childhoods themselves (not that it excuses their crimes IMO). Letby was completely out of the blue.

For everyone wondering how and why, you need to understand how the mind of a psychopath works. A lot of people are aware they often lack empathy and compassion. But not many know that they are unable to derive pleasure from much in life because their brains don't work properly. Their actions tend to be bad because they know that it is an affront to regular people and they get a rush from it. This rush replaces what normal people feel when they enjoy something like spending time with friends, a beautiful piece of art/music, buying stuff, eating good food etc etc. Psychopaths are sometimes unable to derive pleasure from these things and the rush they feel when they do heinous things replaces that missing bit for them. It's actually quite sad, but in no way excuses actions such as those of LL.

I’m old enough to remember Beverley Allitt, that was shocking enough but this is just so so awful too. I wonder where Beverley is now and why the other inmates haven’t done her in.

Solonge · 21/08/2023 23:38

I understood she has been diagnosed as a psychotic. No cure.

She’s in Rampton

"Allitt is currently detained at Rampton Secure Hospital in Nottinghamshire.[8] She became eligible for release on parole after her minimum tariff of thirty years' imprisonment expired in November 2021."

What do they expect these people to look like?

Exactly, people saying she doesn't look like a killer but then killers don't usually walk around with an axe with a mad look on their face frothing at the mouth, they look like me and you, how many times have we heard "but he was such a nice man, he kept himself to himself or he'd do anything for anyone, it's such a shock he murdered those people" well not really, they walk amongst us, we have no idea who we've walked past in the street and what they're capable of.

yippyde · 21/08/2023 23:43

Solonge · 21/08/2023 23:38

Do you mean psychopath?

Psychotic is not a noun so you can't be "a psychotic" - psychotic refers to someone experiencing psychosis. During this, people lose touch with reality and may see and hear things that aren't there. This is very different to being a psychopath.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 21/08/2023 23:48

If the consultants were pretty sure of letby killing babies, why didn't they call the police themselves?
Surely if you really suspected someone was murdering babies and your managers or higher-ups were stuffing their fingers in their ears, then the next thing you'd do is call the police 🤔

I agree I don’t think people totally mean she looks normal it’s the whole package .The fact of nothing nasty from her childhood coming out , her best friend sticking with her , her social media does not scream out attention seeker? Her family seemed stable ( until they decide to support her ) that’s what I think people mean

I saw a photo of Rosemary West earlier - she looked normal to me too. But I suppose she’s from a different era. Like someone else said, it’s seeing Letby in the sorts of photos your friends might post on Facebook that’s hard to get your head around.

One big difference is both her and Hindley were in relationships with murdering psychopaths and accomplices in their crimes - in both cases it didn't sound like they instigated the murders. West and her husband lived really depraved chaotic lives including rape, him prostituting her etc. Hindley 'went along' with Brady - not to say she wasn't culpable, but it's a different situation. LL was a middle class professional with a seemingly stable and supportive background.

Well they did in the end. Initially they weren’t sure what was going on but saw she was the link and asked senior management would do something about it. Which they didn’t.!

As if it isn’t abhorrent enough without introducing elements that don’t exist.

I don't know racism is being cited - this was is tragic. Racism is irrelevant to th whole case
