Watching on Netflix, no spoilers, apart from what a woman she is and what a family they are.

I would guess they were both in their forties if I didn't know their ages. As for their daughter she should be kept in school, all she did was sit in the kitchen and couldn't even chop a vegetable, so housewiving is not for her. I also don't think Paris should be telling her she could be a Doctor or a model. If you don't attend school you cannot be a medial professional

perilady83 · 22/08/2023 19:06

Personally i think Venezuela is smarter than she lets on and wants to reject a lot of it

For a 13yr old seemed v passive, bored with it all. Youd think parts would excite her, eg being filmed but just seemed checked out and dismissive of her parents etc

Wonder if she'll reject that way of life. Not sure what traveller girls are usually like at that ahe

Must be mega lonely being so isolated from peer group at school, unless she lives nr lots of traveller girls her own age. Maybe she does.

Proudgypsy · 22/08/2023 19:33

Venezuela behaved just like any othe traveller girl her age.

Just because she's not in "school" doesn't mean she can't follow a career. She's fortunate enough that with her parent's wealth she could pay for any education she wants.

Why the quotation marks around school?

Most careers and universities will be much harder to get without a secondary education and qualifications. Which I think they legally have to provide? There was mention of a tutor but we didn't actually see one.

Proudgypsy · 23/08/2023 11:32

@Castform because she's not in a school but doesn't mean she isn't being educated. I assume you don't really think that you saw every inch of their lives?

If you want to know how it actually works for most gypsy and traveller children happy to explain instead of you making your own judgemental conclusions.

LostThestral · 23/08/2023 12:43

@Proudgypsy - apologies for my ignorance but I would love to know please. Are most traveller children home educated?

Of course we never saw every inch of their lives. It seemed very whitewashed to me. But we can't actually assume that she's getting a proper education and qualifications when there was no indication of this.

Proudgypsy · 23/08/2023 12:59

@LostThestral so the way it works for most is that they will complete primary school and then withdraw to be home educated. A person from the local authority (not sure of the official title) comes out regularly to check that work is being done.

Now for a lot of them, they have no interest in the work they are doing and only complete it because they have to, not unlike many secondary school students. For those who wish to pursue something, their parents fully encourage that and hire tutors etc as needed. That's changed a lot over the last 5/10 years I'd say.

A very small percentage will go to an actual secondary school and that is because they have chosen to do so.

LostThestral · 23/08/2023 13:08

thank you Proudgypsy

Saying that they are keeps the authorities of their backs.

Lilyoverthevalley · 21/08/2023 14:35

Exactly!

I don't believe in excusing unacceptable world views because he is a traveller, saying it's part of his "culture" and we don't understand his "culture". Where do you draw the line, some religious people (note I said only some!) are against, homosexuality, is that ok because it's part of their culture? Some people are racist, is that ok because of their upbringing and "culture"?

I can't work out why Tyson Fury hasn't been cancelled and is actually being celebrated to the extent of a documentary on Netflix appearing about him. Yet other people are cancelled over a relatively minor single comment made years ago!

To be honest I find it extremely depressing and it makes me feel like a lot of people only pay lip service to feminism while not truly caring about equality.

I wonder how much editing and coaching went on behind the scene, given that while he was certainly entitled and disrespectful to his wife in the doc, they clearly tried to portray him as loving and accepting rather than someone who said he would hang his sister and chain his wife to the bed.

ZingyApple · 24/08/2023 06:55

I really like Paris, she’s a strong woman and holds the family together. She has so much patience, while all around is chaotic!
There might be extra help we don’t see but still, she puts up with a lot. She’s naturally beautiful too.

I know of a similar large family of traveller decent who have wealth. It’s much the same as the Netflix documentary.

The wives are the strong ones, the men seem to run around, wheeling and dealing, buying expensive cars, clothes etc, but never seem happy and fulfilled, always chasing something and never seeming quite settled. It’s like they’ve never truly grown up and their wives, much like how Paris described it, feel like they have another child at times.

Their upbringing will of course have repercussions on how they treat others. I don’t know a lot about John Fury. The set up with his caravan looked lovely, was this staged for the show (?) - I did want to grab that bird cage and set the poor thing free and untether the horse and dog.

If you could put the strength of a person’s character in that boxing ring, Paris would knock out Tyson in the first round!

I personally think she deserves her own show and a HUGE medal!

99% of what we see is editing and coaching. If this is the "good side" I would not want to see the reality.

Yea I'm not sure if it's their fake Irish accents..... they don't live in Ireland

There mum is Irish and I don't think they go to school so not mixing with English kids so yes they have an Irish accent.

.... yes their fake Irish accents. They don't live in Ireland - Tyson grew up in Manchester. There is an Irish twang that sometimes comes out. He still went to school until he was 11.

My parents are from overseas and I have an English accent.

What Irish accent??
I’m Irish and I’m not hearing it?

I'm not Irish but I though they all sounded northern English to me.

@ZingyApple he is a violent criminal who was jailed for gouging someone's eye out.

theworldsgonefeckingmad · 21/08/2023 22:40

@Googlelina how can you compare the taliban who are terrorists and do live executions of people on YouTube to taking children out of school after primary 🤦‍♀️

He's a homophobe, a misogynist and a Jew-hater.

Why do you think the Taliban comparisons are so unreasonable? Oh, I see, because he's white?

perilady83 · 26/08/2023 14:32

Thought it was unusually open to allow the eldest two kids to be shown not really seeming that happy or in awe of their famous parents

Both seemed checked out and almost cynical / had contempt for their father

Unusual to see something where celeb kids arent PR briefed

It doesn't seem so long ago that there was condemnation of him being nominated aged for SPOTY, now he's got his own feelgood documentary.

user1469779776 · 30/08/2023 10:17

Regarding their accent, I am from Dublin and don't think their accents are remotely Irish. They sound British to me. Completely different to the Irish traveller accent.

user1469779776 · 30/08/2023 10:44

Agree, definitely no Irish accent, north of England

CornishGem1975 · 30/08/2023 10:47

Defo not Irish accent, they don't sound like Irish travellers, they sound very Northern.

Galdownunder · 24/09/2024 04:26

I just found this thread after watching the series. I needed to put the subtitles on as their accents were really difficult to understand at first. It’s a real shit show isn’t it? The medicated children acting like animals, scoffing coke out of bottles for gods sake, their names just wtf and Paris is mad for putting up with his shit. She’s also an absolutely dreadful mother - screeching at those kids constantly and speaking to the teenage girl like she’s a bit of shit. The whole family needs to climb in the bin and shut the lid.

They're from the gypsy community. Have you not heard a gypsy accent before?
