A collective gaggle of school matrons and castor oil would do the job.

What have I started? As it happens, looking at Rishi I don’t think we’re going to need the army.

🤣🤣👀

Had to be done!

"Oh no. Hope you do t feel too rough with it."

Thanks Itsgettingweird. 3rd time with Covid, fully vaccinated etc, it has pretty much floored me. Hopefully coming out of it now though.
I guess in England we might see a bump in cases as the schools & universities have gone back.

UK econmy shrinks because of 'strikes and bad weather' Hmm

A competent government should be able to steer the economy through strikes and bad weather without it shrinking. Isn't that what we pay them for?

I presume the government wanted the economy to shrink due to strikes, otherwise they would have taken some steps to avoid them?

It's like Wes Streeting said this morning, Barclays says his door is open but without being willing to negotiate, it just leaves a draughty room.

Is the problem that the individuals who are running the government have never been told no in their lives, so don't know how to negotiate?

JanieEyre · 13/09/2023 12:26

I think there is something in that. Back in the day, whenever there was a strike people on both sides got together in the traditional smoke-filled room and hammered out some sort of compromise. Both sides were reasonably realistic that that was going to have to happen.

Come Thatcher things started to change, and new legislation changed things a bit, but nevertheless until around 2010 - and possibly a bit later - there was still a more realistic approach to disputes. But the current lot seem to be stunned that the lower classes don't know their place, and think that the way to deal with strikes is to go off to the media giving soundbites about selfish teachers/nurses/doctors/railway workers etc, and are totally clueless when someone like Mick Lynch strikes back with the inconvenient facts.

DuncinToffee · 13/09/2023 12:47

Just seen a few clips from PMQs, think Sunak is urgently looking for that fridge.

Part of me wishes Kier had just pressed on the points he was making about trade deals. It’s probably best not to overuse the point but it was such a joy to see so many legs clearly kicked out from under that side of the benches.

mibbelucieachwell · 13/09/2023 13:19

Late to the party. Now watching Therese Coffey answering Q's on the discharge of sewage into public waterways.

She has described the last labour gov as doing "sweet F all" and made puns about the labour mp who asked the Q "soiling his reputation " .

What an offensive way to speak. Swearing and making cheap jokes.

Speaker eventually told, her off for immoderate language. It's disgraceful.

Notonthestairs · 13/09/2023 14:08

I think the strikes are a very useful smoke screen for other failures. I think they are built in to Conservative pre election strategy - pile on the blame on external factors and claim they have been vexed by bad actors.

This requires them to "tough it out" and if that is at the expense of our health and economic progress so be it.

They aren't looking to win new voters - just shoring up the existing base where they can.

Zonder · 13/09/2023 15:38

Was Hoyle the speaker today @mibbelucieachwell ? Would be unusual for him to tell a Tory off, even mildly!

RafaistheKingofClay · 13/09/2023 15:43

Bad weather. Ok it hasn’t been great but it’s not like we’ve been on fire or has huge floods is it? It’s in fairly poor tsar given what’s happened in Libya over the past few days.

I wonder what the next excuse will be.

I thought Sunak was in favour of more bad weather given his policy of increasing global warming?

Trust Keir.

We wondered the same about hammering home partygate, and look how that ended up in the long run.

My schools already rampaged. It's week 2.

Tory MP Tobias Ellwood resigns as chair of the Commons defence committee after controversial Afghanistan video.

Members of Select Committee tabled a motion against him
He resigned before the vote tomorrow

I was horrified by that video from Afghanistan. It showed terrible judgement.

Piggywaspushed · 13/09/2023 18:53

When Mark Francois states no confidence in you that's When you know you have jumped the Tory shark.

Notonthestairs · 13/09/2023 18:56

Was it Mark Francois that called Sunak bent?

My mistake. He called the Government bent.

mibbelucieachwell · 13/09/2023 19:16

@Zonder It was one of the deputy speakers today.
