I suppose they want to space out the bad news!

the80sweregreat · 06/09/2023 21:20

Most MPs haven't resigned

Notonthestairs · 06/09/2023 21:27

There is still time!

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/09/2023 21:36

I thought I’d seen he’d resigned but can’t find anything now.

Perhaps it was a mass hallucination.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/refugees-homelessness-hotels-evictions-home-office-b2405326.html

Government have quietly changed the point that the 28days for successful asylum claimants to find accommodation from the point that they get their ID documents issued when they get the letter confirming their success. This has had the entirely predictable result that many are becoming homeless.

Thousands more refugees facing homelessness after government eviction rule changes

140 organisations, including Red Cross, Crisis and Shelter, write to Michael Gove and Suella Braverman

itsgettingweird · 07/09/2023 04:46

There really no depths they won't sink to is there?

LlynTegid · 07/09/2023 07:37

I'm sure we'll find out within the next year, though hard to predict what will be next.

usuallydormant · 07/09/2023 08:37

I'm not sure this has been mentioned: Sunak's goverment has managed to get all the parties of NI to agree on something.... that they are all opposed to the Legacy Bill passing through parliament at the moment which stops any new criminal investigations or civil cases about atrocities during the conflict, many of which were carried out by veterans.

Another likely case for the ECHR.

Those against include – unusually – all of the North’s five main political parties, as well as relatives of those bereaved by the Troubles and victims and survivors’ groups and human rights organisations.
Also against are the Irish Government and other parties in Ireland and Britain, and internationally it is opposed in the United States and Europe, and by the United Nations.
Those who oppose it say will block bereaved families from ever receiving either truth or justice and is in breach of the UK government’s international human rights obligations.

Northern Ireland Troubles legacy Bill: What it means for victims’ families

Thanks usuallydormant, I hadn't seen anything about that.

Fascinating polling from Bright Blue. Despite all the 'will of the people' guff from Braverman, only 24% of voters support government policy of sending asylum seekers automatically to Rwanda without processing their claim. 57% support introduction of humanitarian visas.

"Price of fixing school concrete crisis in England ‘approaching £150m’" That's not much more than the Festival of Brexit cost. Add in the Department of Education's luxury décor refurbishment, and that would have more than covered the fixes. Grr!

Exclusive: analysis suggests bill could rise much further, with major rebuilding programme possible instead of temporary fixes

About time.

RafaistheKingofClay · 07/09/2023 10:59

I think he had to do it today so they can hold the by election on the same day as mid Beds.

AdamRyan · 07/09/2023 12:05

It's àll a bit weird due to boundary changes. Looks like whoever gets selected won't stand at the next election Confused

DuncinToffee · 07/09/2023 13:32

Add to woke list

💥Statement from the Prison Officer Association:
“No-one ever wants to see an escape from prison, but since 2010 this union has been saying: cuts have consequences. You cannot take out £900m from the budget and expect the prison service to operate as if nothing has happened.” 1/3

The chickens coming home to roost are flooding in now. 😂

Notonthestairs · 07/09/2023 14:04

On Radio 4 today, science minister Michelle Donelan said the number of frontline prison officers “increased by 20%” in the last year.

This isn’t correct. The number of FTE band 3-5 officers rose by 3.2% in the year to June 2023. (1/2)

x.com/fullfact/status/1699767207838745081?s=46&t=Uw4lJNwxFZFnX0Xs3doHYg

She hadn't factored in the number of prison officers leaving or staff changes.

@usuallydormant - I hadn't read anything about the Legacy Bill. Very interesting. I find it so strange that the Government are pressing ahead with this despite overwhelming opposition.

It seems this government only forge ahead with things that have opposition.

Everything they are forging ahead with aren't things that the polls are showing have huge support.

Yet apparently are "the will of the British people"

DuncinToffee · 07/09/2023 17:25

Everything is crumbling down around them

NEW

RAAC worries spread

Government body writes to local authorities and housing bodies to make sure owners can identify RAAC and "develop proportionate mitigation and remediation plans"

"Inform us if you identify issues which suggest material non-compliance with any of the Regulatory Standards"

The LGA say they need money to help with the crisis

“The Government needs to ensure councils have the necessary funding and access to the right technical expertise as they now look to identify any buildings they are responsible for which may contain RAAC, and put in place plans to remediate them.”

Johnny Mercer has been particularly active in pushing it through. HMG don't want to run the risk of being held accountable for crimes committed by its forces in NI. Protecting GB veterans and government secrets is the objective, the views of the people of NI as usual don't seem to matter too much.
