Crumbling Houses of Parliament. Very symbolic!

DuncinToffee · 05/09/2023 18:25

Who will be the one doing the checks with an instruction manual and a hammer 🤔

Houses of Parliament have been crumbling for ages. I think they are still debating about whether they are going to move while it gets fixed. Bits regularly fall off it.

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/09/2023 19:27

I definitely wouldn’t tap it with a hammer, the whole thing might go.

Piggywaspushed · 05/09/2023 19:30

Presumably that's why they removed hammer from their initial instructions??

MrTiddlesTheCat · 05/09/2023 19:34

In terms of plot twists in this dark comedy we're currently living through, parliament collapsing (literally) would be a cracking (see what I there) end.

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/09/2023 20:07

It’s the ultimate metaphor.

The article above is from 2017. They’ve made so much progress on this that, this one is from last year.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10411867/amp/Chunks-stonework-falling-crumbling-Parliament-ahead-planned-14billion-refurbishment.html

The Guardian had a podcast on it last week and not much seems to have changed. I think there’s a debate scheduled for December but it’s likely to be postponed until after any election.

It is another good example of how much the Conservatives currently value conserving anything.

RafaistheKingofClay · 05/09/2023 20:57

Personally I’d turn it into a museum and rebuild it in a more suitable building.

Something less adversarial and more accessible. I’m all for tradition but it doesn’t really function well as it is.

Well it's certainly been coming down like a house of cards recently!

Oh

Tests are being carried out to determine if RAAC is present in the Houses of Parliament

Surveyors are currently investigating if it’s used in any part of the parliamentary estate

Surveyors? Couldn't they find any head teachers to do the checks?

Ooops. It had to be the case knowing the Sunak government. They can’t go a day without any story somehow managing to get worse. It’s quite a skill.

Construction work at a school

13 schools with RAAC had building work scrapped

The schools were among those that lost out when Building Schools for the Future was cancelled.

L1ttledrummergirl · 06/09/2023 00:00

To be fair, I think he's likely to be remembered as the worst PM ever, and coming after Truss, that takes some doing.

I think the best he can hope for in the future is that history forgets him.

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/09/2023 00:17

Somehow among all the school building/Keegan crap I missed this. This is just a Tory cabinet minister standing up and proposing life sentences for lawyers who coach migrants. WTAF.

And here comes the attack on the disabled and unemployed.... sick note from the GP? But we have said you are fit for work so that means your benefits will stop.... when are they bringing back work houses?!

RafaistheKingofClay · 06/09/2023 07:17

I thought working from home was bad and everyone needed to get back to the office unless they were a cabinet minister?

itsgettingweird · 06/09/2023 08:05

Anyone watching GMB?

There's people behind the reporters with brilliants signs about what a fuck up the Tory's have made.

They are clever little slogans.

My favourite so far as been "Brexit got Britain done".

Hopefully a little bit of free propaganda about the truth.

I understand that one of the purposes of Brexit was to free the UK from some of the regulations that the EU imposes. I suppose things like building regulations. I wonder how getting rid of those is going?

Yes and didn't they also make us stick to silly little rules about sewage and water?

@DuncinToffee obviously benefits claimants need less money to encourage them to work, and millionaires need more money to encourage them to work. Makes sense 🙃
