I was in a pub full of male football fans...

When the England women scored yesterday.

I was in the crowded pub at a ground before our local side's game. The roar that went up when the women scored was loud , completely comparable to if the male national squad had taken the lead.

Times are changing. Not long ago I doubt it would even have been on, they certainly wouldn't have been giving it much attention.

They've probably realised that the blokes are shit and the women have a better chance at actually winning!

pilates · 13/08/2023 17:37

That’s nice to hear

LaDeeDa123 · 13/08/2023 17:40

That would have made me happy to hear to.

Datafan55 · 13/08/2023 17:41

Good! And roll on Wednesday :-)

Sirzy · 13/08/2023 17:42

It’s brilliant.

im not a football fan but I am a rugby league fan. Yesterday my teams womens side won at Wembley - the first women’s rugby league side to do so - and it has been great to see the postive response from all fans to what was a massive historic event for the game.

Datafan55 · 13/08/2023 17:44

I was just happy to see the World Cup (not England) on in a pub last Monday lunchtime.
(Can't speak for the rest as I don't get out much!)

LaDeeDa123 · 13/08/2023 17:48

The women’s RL final was great @sirzy. There’s always been a huge female following in RL so it’s great to see women playing on this type of stage too. It’s wonderful.

PurpleSteak · 13/08/2023 17:50

I have to admit I'm not a rugby fan so I was unaware of that game, but on the train home from the football, people were taling about having been to "the rugby" at Wembley. No one mentioned it was a women's game 🙂

It is. When me and my sister where children it was still seemed a bit odd for women to support rugby and it was assumed we where there to perv at the players by the time we reached our teen years (that was just an added bonus) the idea of playing when we where younger (early 40s now) was not even possible so it’s great how far it has come.

women’s sport across the board seems to finally be getting the attention it should and after so long of sport being so male dominated it’s fantastic

It was both. Every year the Men’s team play the challenge cup final there but for the first time yesterday the Women’s game was also played (it was a triple header with a lower league final being the last game of the day).

BBC also showed the Women’s final which was another positive.

Vallmo47 · 13/08/2023 17:54

I love it too OP, I hear the regulars I swim with talk about “the game” and I know what they’re on about - our amazing Lionesses! That’s SO cool.

LibbyOTV · 13/08/2023 18:00

Love to hear this! This world cup has been excellent. and I love to think little girls around the world having these women as role models - I don't think we can overestimate the impact this has.

Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 · 13/08/2023 18:05

I went to a pub in England once during euros WC or whatever we're not English , it was very uncomfortable . I wish times would change .

SirChenjins · 13/08/2023 18:08

It’s bloody brilliant, isn’t it? Finally, women’s football is being given the recognition it deserves and the dinosaurs of yesterday who would belittle and demean are slowly starting to die out.

LaDeeDa123 · 13/08/2023 18:09

Really @sirzy I’m a lifelong RL fan and never once was made to feel I was only there to perv over the players. Maybe it depends on which club you support?

It's so exciting. I'm seeing friends post pictures of their sons watching and cheering on the games (yay!). Come along way since as a child I wasn't able to play as there was only a boys team in my village and they said no to me (ok fair enough).

Not seen a single car with an English flag the whole womens football has been over hyped. Keep convincing yourself otherwise.

bonzaitree · 13/08/2023 18:41

I think there will always be people who prefer the men’s game. And actually I think that’s perfectly fine. People like what they like.

Babdoc · 13/08/2023 18:48

I think it’s hilarious to read the comments that angry, defensive, male dinosaurs post under sports reports from the Women’s World Cup in the Times Online.

They are obviously furious that the men have never won the Euros and our women lifted that trophy, and they get grumpier with every match we win in the World Cup!
They post nonsense like “Nobody watches it” - to which I take pleasure in pointing out the sold out stadiums, 4 million ITV viewers in the U.K. and estimated global audience of 2 billion!

True, each to their own, for me there is a lack of speed and intensity. Very supportive of women and girls playing football for enjoyment but the idea they will ever have equality in earnings with men is for the birds.
The gulf is enormous £70 for a Tottenham WSL shows how little money there is in the womens game. Also Dallas FC u15s 5 US womens team 2 shows the actual standard.
I would rather watch mens football.

Luizaa · 13/08/2023 18:50

WSL season ticket I meant

BlastedIce · 13/08/2023 18:52

Loving it, brings a great lift to the country, I’m looking forward to Wednesday and the TV will be on in our office for everyone to watch the game.

Free and discounted tickets, free to air broadcasting and now real football is back quickly forgotten.
Totally over hyped

That's a good thing. The fewer prats driving around with England flags the better IMO.
