I was in a pub full of male football fans...

When the England women scored yesterday.

I was in the crowded pub at a ground before our local side's game. The roar that went up when the women scored was loud , completely comparable to if the male national squad had taken the lead.

Times are changing. Not long ago I doubt it would even have been on, they certainly wouldn't have been giving it much attention.

They've probably realised that the blokes are shit and the women have a better chance at actually winning!

England, ranked 4th in the world and therefore “Shit”.
Absolutely everything wrong with people in one short sentence.

Agreed, England are fantastic, the U21s are Euro champions.

Daffodilwoman · 14/08/2023 07:34

Dh watches and always has watched women’s sport.
The women’s team have more chance of winning than the mens.
It’s good to see female commentators on TV now too. This didn’t happen in the past.

Free and discounted tickets, free to air broadcasting and now real football is back quickly forgotten.
Totally over hyped

I went to see the Lionesses at Old Trafford alongside 60,000 people we paid quite a lot for our tickets. Was fucking brilliant and far better than the atmosphere has been at many a united game. The men's world cup is free to air too.

smilesup · 14/08/2023 07:42

Of course the standard is not as good. Until little girls are taken to football from aged 3 at the same rates as the boys, that money is invested in the foundation and premier level, until girls can play at school at actually get passed to as much as the boys, and encouraged to play by their parents etc. Until all clubs have professional teams it's not going to happen but it's changing dramatically in my lifetime and it's amazing.

£70 for a WSL season ticket? A ninth tier season ticket for mens football £85 .
Parity of revenue, parity of income for players.

That says more about united than womens football.

You can think what you like, Luiza. The rest of us are going to enjoy the sport.

”real football” was like that when I started going in the 80s @Luizaa Cheap to get in, on the telly. That’s when I fell in love with it. It was a much more real experience then than it is now. Now the “real game” is financially out of reach of most kids. And the Game is not better for it.

I am a msssive fan of a “real football” team. (COYW) and I’m Not forgetting the World Cup.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 14/08/2023 07:59

Here in Australia the Australia v France match broke sporting viewing records. The support is phenomenal. Can't wait till the Aussie England game!!

I'm taking my sons to see both the men's and women's big mash cricket, my nephews and nieces have gone to both the men's and women's AFL fixtures.

Women's sports is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

True, each to their own, for me there is a lack of speed and intensity. Very supportive of women and girls playing football for enjoyment but the idea they will ever have equality in earnings with men is for the birds.
The gulf is enormous £70 for a Tottenham WSL shows how little money there is in the womens game. Also Dallas FC u15s 5 US womens team 2 shows the actual standard.
I would rather watch mens football.

I like the women’s game more simply because they get on with the business of playing without the drama, pretending to be hurt.

It properly winds me up the fact that in every single game at least one bloke will get an accidental kick on the leg & roll around for several minutes then get up & carry on, apparently. it completely spoils the game for me.

The women just don’t seem to do this.

I also think when it’s on tv, you get to see more of the women playing, as there seems to be fewer cameras. They tend to follow the players not the ball which I like.

GloriousSludge · 14/08/2023 08:27

I only watch women’s football on TV - sport isn’t my thing, and I only started watching because my dd plays football and wanted me to. Turns out I really enjoy it.

I’ve tried watching men’s football, but the rolling around in fake agony is so annoying that I can’t get in to it.

I suspect there’s quite a few mums of football playing girls who have started watching for this reason - DD’s age group at her football club has tripled in size in the last few years.

BerryPieandCustard · 14/08/2023 08:42

DH, an avid men’s football fan, will watch any match on TV and will be glued to it, watched the game against Colombia as I already had it on.

He got really in to it and was on the edge of the sofa in suspense just as he is in some of the men’s games, he has conceded that actually women CAN play football just as well as men and he really enjoyed the match.

roll on Wednesday!

  1. As there has been no investment in women's sport research it's not known why so many ACL injuries are occurring. Do get in touch with Arsenal WFC and let them know you've solved the mystery and they just need to remove their 3G pitches.
  1. Heading the ball is dangerous for male players. Outfield players are 4 times more likely to develop dementia. That's why heading is no longer allowed at certain levels and there are strict training conditions for adolescents.
  1. The new sport you have described is called Futsal.

Inmyownlittlecorner · 14/08/2023 10:52

I love Womens football. DD2 plays at the Arsenal hub & is a huge Arsenal ladies fan. The tickets are cheaper than the mens so we manage to go to all of the Emirates home matches, but I do think they'll have to raise the cost soon. DH has also really got into Womens football over the last 2 years.
We've also been to a few Lioness matches, the atmosphere is brilliant.

The amount of ACL injuries is concerning but hopefully the new research into Women's football boots will be a positive impact.

Watching Chloe Kelly's penalty in the Nigeria match was amazing & more powerful than than any premier league goal last season!

MattDamon · 14/08/2023 12:14

Can't stand men's football. Boring, brutish, overpaid, not worth the price of admission. The difference is, I don't feel the need to hop on every thread about it and loudly declare my feelings. It doesn't bother me that other people enjoy men's football.

Why do these sad men think anyone gives a shit what they think? It's pathetic.

BatheInTheLight · 14/08/2023 12:18

I like men's football but have zero interest in the women's game. Best of luck to them though of course.

RocketIceLollie · 14/08/2023 13:07

Woman's international football seems to be popular now but I think the domestic woman's football still has a long way to go to reach interest levels of men's football.

We need fair play rules for the WSL. Wages need to come out of gate receipts for WSL games not parasitcally bled as a cross subsidy.

Woman really need to support the woman's game. It's no good just moaning about woman not being paid the same as their male counterparts if they in turn don't bother to attend games or watch on TV to push up TV viewings.
