I was in a pub full of male football fans...

When the England women scored yesterday.

I was in the crowded pub at a ground before our local side's game. The roar that went up when the women scored was loud , completely comparable to if the male national squad had taken the lead.

Times are changing. Not long ago I doubt it would even have been on, they certainly wouldn't have been giving it much attention.

That's great, at long last! We do pretty well as a nation in women's sport. Our netball team are awesome too.

Well @Luizaa you have certainty succeeded in destroying a discussion about people enjoying the game with your bizarre and aggressive posting. 13 posts and the thread isn’t even two pages long. 👏

Realism, dispelling the hype and expectations and placing safety at the core of the discussion.
What is wrong with that?

You are just coming across as a misogynistic desperate to prove your point. Why not go to Facebook, there’s plenty who share your view point in the daily Mail comments section.

No concern about safety? Women being encouraged into a sport that might harm them physically?

Undoubtedly the medical teams need to make sure they are aware of the female anatomy and the difference that may have when it comes to injuries- I had a similar conversation during the women’s challenge cup final in the rugby yesterday.

but that shouldn’t be used as an excuse to stop women play or restrict their play. It should be used as a learning curve

Do you post as incessantly on conversations on social media about say, mens boxing, or is it just us women who need to be educated on our frailties by a man?

Agreed, some alterations to reduce the frequency of head impact. There are 4 English players who should be playing sidelined with cruxiate injuries.
Statistically the incidence of this type of injury is a major issue in womens football yet it is never appears to be mentioned or addressed.
Natural turf allows for greater cushioning 3g and 4g are too firm..

Why do you want things to change @Guiltyfeethavegotnorhythm0 ? Enjoying football and rugby league is an important part of working-class culture. Why should we change because you feel uncomfortable in a pub showing football?

mbernue · 13/08/2023 20:20

I don't think "times are changing". I think it's summer, people will watch football.

Before female sports weren't often showed in pubs, just sports places like Walkabout. Now whey are they.

Woman's sports isn't as fast as mens. The mens team is much better than the woman's team. It's just biology.

Note how there where very few women watching the game....

And I say this as an ex athlete

I think Guilty makes a valid point, extreme levels of partiality do make some people uncomfortable.
Perhaps go to pubs without a tele.

LaDeeDa123 · 13/08/2023 20:33

well yes @Luizaa, don’t go to a pub full of football fans if you are going to complain about them. Don’t also claim that exuberance is the same as violence. Try also to understand other peoples’ culture before criticising them. I wouldn’t dream of claiming to feel threatened by noisy Italian football fans if I was in a bar in Rome with the football on. Basically the world doesn’t revolve around that poster and her family.

Agreed, hype and agenda pushing by the BBC. A pundit was asked before one of the games whether WSL games should be shown on Match of the Day. She was very excited about it, I doubt whether the viewers would be

I think @Luizaa makes some good points here particularly with regard to injuries. Not sure what is misogynistic about what they have said. Does seem to be a word that's overused on MN to the point where it has lost its meaning. For me women's football is not exciting in the same way men's football is. Not the same atmosphere at matches and not the same quality. We all like different things I guess

catscatscurrantscurrants · 13/08/2023 21:53

@Luizaa, I wasn't paying the plumber. He made no remark about my house, nice or otherwise. We were discussing women's football, both expressing our admiration of their skill and good attitude. HTH.

Pandaflop · 13/08/2023 22:00

I think it's brilliant. Nothing is going to change overnight, it doesn't mean that just because women's football isn't on par salary and viewer wise as men's football that this increased interest in women's sport isn't exciting and a really positive thing. Men have been the default in sport for a long time, women's team may sadly never be equal in terms of many metrics to them, but that doesn't change the fact this is good news.

Freepo · 13/08/2023 22:03

I watch men’s football all the time and have done my whole life. I’m a season ticket holder and I just can’t get into women’s football in the same way. I really want to because I think they’re awesome - I just don’t enjoy it as much.

other sports I far prefer watching women eg hockey, netball, gymnastics.

Although not obsessed by women’s football in the same way as men’s, I think it’s wonderful that more people are watching and they are getting more recognition. I also think that the inclusion of female pundits/commentator is brilliant - I think Alex Scott is as tactically astute and more as any male pUnfit

GreggingIt · 13/08/2023 22:09

My DH said “we should watch it”, so we did and enjoyed it. He’s also been watching a lot of women’s cricket (more his sport than football).

I watch the men’s World Cup. It is bizarrely WAY less stressful watching our lionesses! I could actually enjoy the game without thinking any minute now we’re out and all the weird hype and pressure that goes with it.

True, each to their own, for me there is a lack of speed and intensity. Very supportive of women and girls playing football for enjoyment but the idea they will ever have equality in earnings with men is for the birds.
The gulf is enormous £70 for a Tottenham WSL shows how little money there is in the womens game. Also Dallas FC u15s 5 US womens team 2 shows the actual standard.
I would rather watch mens football.

What was the last match you watched - start to finish?

SellFridges · 14/08/2023 07:00

We watched in the pub as well, before going to a Premier League game. Really great atmosphere (especially as there was also a table of Colombia fans).

There was one table of about eight blokes who loudly declared “I just don’t care about women’s sport” etc every time anything exciting happened. I think they were a bit put out by the end that nobody else thought their way…
