Tell Me...What songs do you want at your funeral?

I know, bit morbid.
Tell me your songs (and why if you want cos songs are personal).

Today in my car I heard the song by Train - Drops of Jupiter. I think the lead person Pat wrote it after his mum died. And I thought "ummm could be on my shortlist."

Reasons why asking; I love music, need some inspiration, I always wonder why particular songs chosen when I'm at funeral.
Annoyingly my health running down hill. Treatment for leukaemia is lurking to put me (hopefully) into remission.
I am catastrophising today and thinking what if it all goes crap.
So my focus is on music. I don't want my lovely family picking all the music- it will be horrific! (Light-hearted but honestly urgh).

I've got a list of several of my favourite heavy metal songs to be played on the way in and of the service but my main request is to have Fire by Arthur brown played as the curtains close over my coffin in the crematorium.

Amy hit the atmosphere by Counting Crows

My name is Amy (time for my next MN name change!) and the lyrics are

"Amy hit the atmosphere. She bought herself a rocket ride of this gutter"

@FlamingYam There’s a podcast by the BBC called Soul Music where people talk about a particular song and what it means to them and they did an episode on Miserere Mei, Deus, might be worth a listen?

Thank you so much. Will definitely take a look!

I’ve actually got a list…
was telling the family the other day…
banter is my thing so all songs picked are for a reason and they aren’t the typical songs you hear at funerals

in the end - linkin park
every breath you take - the police ( to be played at end when every one is leaving )
end of the Road, - Boyz II Men
Bring me to life - evanescence
Bye-bye by *NSYNC
Somebody I used to know - Gotye
Hello - Adele
See you again by Charlie Puth and Wiz Khalifa
Bury a friend - Billie Eilish

If I Ever Leave This World Alive by Flogging Molly. I love it and it captures how I feel about death.

Hope you're doing okay, OP.

I want Good Riddance by Greenday too, it’s a shame about the name.

I agree - but couldn't you just ask for it to be called 'Time Of Your life' in the order of service?! That's a cracking song, but Glen Campbell's version is my favourite.

Another vote for In My Life, but I would definitely want the Johnny Cash version. I know The Beatles wrote it, but (imho!)I think they sang it too upbeat and cheery, and were too young at the time to do it full justice.

Other contenders would be:
Sandy Denny - Who Knows Where The Time Goes?
Alan Jackson - Remember When
Another hymn: O Love That Wilt Not Let Me Go

One practical note I'd add, as you don't always think about it until it's too late: bear in mind that people leave whilst the last song is playing; so don't choose something with the super-poignant part right at the end, as nobody will hear it.

Clawdy · 14/08/2023 08:08

I really don't think the Beatles version of In My Life is "upbeat and cheery", even those opening notes have a beautiful poignancy.

Aaarghthepancakes · 14/08/2023 08:13

Monty Python 'Always look on the bright side of life', and 'It's a wonderful world' Louis Armstrong.

Applebobbins · 14/08/2023 08:24

Not sure about entrance music but the b would like ‘how great though art’ which has been played at all of the family funerals I have been to and my exit song id like ‘together in electric dreams.

FuckMeSidewaysAndCallMeBarbara · 14/08/2023 09:43

This made me laugh!

That's another reason for wanting the song @Abracadabra12345. It would definitely lighten the mood.

wellstopdoingitthen · 14/08/2023 10:43

Volare - Dean Martin

Dead by My Chemical Romance

Appropriate, I suppose 🤷‍♀️😂

For me:
Opening tune: Creep - Radiohead (non-sweary version depending on situation). Suits me.

Middle, contemplative piece: "Closing" from Glassworks by Philip Glass. Beautiful and appropriate.

Going out: "Days" by The Kinks - perfect song about the end of time spent with (a) loved one(s), but cherished and remembered forever.

eandz13 · 14/08/2023 11:32

Ayla - DJ Taucher
Ready To Fly - Rozalla

Quite fancy a rave at my funeral, and they're 2 of my favourite tunes.

Someone I know recently went to a funeral and they played this as her friend’s coffin lowered.

Monty Python 'Always look on the bright side of life', and 'It's a wonderful world' Louis Armstrong.

Damn, yes! It would be great to squeeze in "What a Wonderful World" too... Got to be the most positive and beautiful song ever.

May It Be by Enya, LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring is my favourite film and I bloody love that song. I want people in floods of tears at my funeral, crying can be so cathartic.

My favourite film too! My brother introduced me to LOTR books as a child, 60 years ago. I arranged his funeral 10 years ago, and had Into the West by Annie Lennox played as the coffin went into the flames.

FizzingAda · 14/08/2023 19:49

The Lark Ascending
Days of our Lives by Queen
annies Song, it was number one when we got married, and I love John Denver

ChocolateCakeOverspill · 14/08/2023 19:51

I haven’t read the thread so these may have been mentioned before but depending on my mood I go from wildflowers by Tom Petty and See you in my Dreams by Bruce Springsteen to firestarter by prodigy and Sunchyme by Darius G

FOffULEZ · 14/08/2023 19:53

"Old and Wise" by the Alan Parsons project, it has to be the original version though with lead vocals by the brilliant Colin Blunstone

Plus "Wishing on a Star" by Rose Royce
