Tell Me...What songs do you want at your funeral?

I know, bit morbid.
Tell me your songs (and why if you want cos songs are personal).

Today in my car I heard the song by Train - Drops of Jupiter. I think the lead person Pat wrote it after his mum died. And I thought "ummm could be on my shortlist."

Reasons why asking; I love music, need some inspiration, I always wonder why particular songs chosen when I'm at funeral.
Annoyingly my health running down hill. Treatment for leukaemia is lurking to put me (hopefully) into remission.
I am catastrophising today and thinking what if it all goes crap.
So my focus is on music. I don't want my lovely family picking all the music- it will be horrific! (Light-hearted but honestly urgh).

I want 'Vespering' by Thea Gilmore, and at the committal, 'There she goes' by the La's.

We’re All Alone by Boz Scaggs for me

You are the first person I have ever seen who even knows Boz Scaggs is. I bought Silk Degrees when it first came out, it was the first cd I ever bought when I began to replace my vinyl collection and one of the first albums I bought on iTunes. It is my favourite album ever - I could (and do) listen to it over and over. He is very underrated imo. Nice to know somebody else out there likes him too.

Is That All There Is by Peggy Lee.

heartofglass23 · 13/08/2023 17:23

Good riddance. (Because of the ER episode)
In the End Linkin Park
Live Forever and/or don't look back in anger by oasis
Nights in white satin

Deadringer · 13/08/2023 17:29

I like these 3, will be up to my dc on the day though.

  1. Leave right now, Will Young
  2. Let her go, Passenger
  3. Someone you loved, Lewis Capaldi
Restinggoddess · 13/08/2023 17:31

Nick Cave - Into my arms
Sinead O’Connor- Thank you for hearing me
Monty Python - Always look on the bright side of life

Sgtmajormummy · 13/08/2023 17:55

Stevie Wonder “As”.

As around the sun the earth knows she's revolving
And the rosebuds know to bloom in early may
Just as hate knows love's the cure
You can rest your mind assure
That I'll be loving you always

As now can't reveal the mystery of tomorrow
But in passing will grow older every day
Just as all that's born is new
You know what I say is true
That I'll be loving you always

(Until the rainbow burns the stars out in the sky)
Always
(Until the ocean covers every mountain high)
Always
(Until the dolphin flies and parrots live at sea)
Always
(Until we dream of life and life becomes a dream)

Did you know that true love asks for nothing
No no her acceptance is the way we pay
Did you know that life has given love a guarantee
To last through forever and another day

Just as time knew to move on since the beginning
And the seasons know exactly when to change
Just as kindness knows no shame
Know through all your joy and pain
That I'll be loving you always

As today I know I'm living
But tomorrow could make me the past
But that I mustn't fear
For I'll know deep in my mind
The love of me I've left behind
'Cause I'll be loving you always.

I've only got as far as choosing the music to play as people are leaving, which is the piano outro from Layla.

AndStand · 13/08/2023 18:06

The Lark Ascending by Vaughan Williams

RJnomore1 · 13/08/2023 18:11

Into your arms - nick cave
if you have to go - Geneva
I would like a third with a female vocalist but so far I haven’t settled on one.

I may have thought about this a bit too much 😬

Awumminnscotland · 13/08/2023 18:22

I love No One Sleeps by Geneva.

Franticbutterfly · 13/08/2023 18:42

Tony de vit - The Dawn
Vivaldi - Four seasons (winter)
Layo and Bushwacker - Finally (Tim Deluxe remix).

britespark1 · 13/08/2023 18:43

“How I am supposed to live without you” by Michael Bolton as I used to sing it in child talent competitions and it’s a bit of a family in-joke 😂

Ooh. That's perfect.

I also like a PP's suggestion of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird (extended version).

But then again, I do think you can't been Mozart's Lacrimosa Requiem.

TiffanyLilly · 13/08/2023 18:52

Schubert’s “Ave Maria”.

I don't want anyone there apart from my children and their support.

I doubt anyone else had any genuine love for me and they probably won't pray, as even family have fallen away.

I would rather my children keep the money, avoid crushed hands, nosey, grabby, exploitative gossips looking for resources, I would rather they have a nice peaceful meal.

itsgettingweird · 13/08/2023 18:52

My mum chose the air that I breathe for the beginning and circle of life for the end of her funeral.

Seemed like a good choice.

A friend had My heart will go on - her parents chose that as we were kids.

Another friends parents chose Everybody Hurts by REM.

I can't remember the others songs (I've attended lots of funerals) so I think you choose something personal to you not for people to remember. But these songs had lyrics that made me remember iyswim?

FuckMeSidewaysAndCallMeBarbara · 13/08/2023 18:52

Nellie the Elephant. I think the words"packed her trunk and said good buy to the circus" are quite poignant. And "off she went with a trumpety trump" are becoming more fitting the older I get!

FuckMeSidewaysAndCallMeBarbara · 13/08/2023 18:53

"Goodbye" obviously!

WorriedMutha · 13/08/2023 18:57

Two people closest to me divulged what their funeral choices would be. They had thought this through when facing serious illness. The subject came up on a drunken New Year's Eve. They are both alive and kicking twenty odd years later but I am still haunted by those choices. One was Wild Horses by the Stones and the other was Every Grain of Sand by Dylan. I still shudder when I hear those tracks as it takes me back to those desperate days of their illnesses. I find it really hard to be flippant now about funeral choices. Not trying to put a dampener on the thread but it jumped to mind as soon as I saw the title.

WaitingfortheTardis · 13/08/2023 18:59

I would like:

Wonderful life from Smallfoot
Somewhere over the rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole
Fields of gold by Sting

Not sure how many we are allowed but also You are my sunshine as I have aways loved singing it to my daughter.

I wish you all the best for your treatment.

mawbroon · 13/08/2023 18:59

Dear Friends by Queen

thinkkook · 13/08/2023 19:03

Green and Grey by New Model Army and One Way by Levellers.

Mumofcats5 · 13/08/2023 19:04

My cousin and I separately decided and then shared with each other at family karaoke that we would have Treat People with Kindness by Harry Styles at the ends of our funeral services.

I'd also like Who Wants To Live Forever by Queen as feel that would get everyone in the right mood to celebrate my life.

I'm not sure what other songs but there will definitely be more music
