Tell Me...What songs do you want at your funeral?

I know, bit morbid.
Tell me your songs (and why if you want cos songs are personal).

Today in my car I heard the song by Train - Drops of Jupiter. I think the lead person Pat wrote it after his mum died. And I thought "ummm could be on my shortlist."

Reasons why asking; I love music, need some inspiration, I always wonder why particular songs chosen when I'm at funeral.
Annoyingly my health running down hill. Treatment for leukaemia is lurking to put me (hopefully) into remission.
I am catastrophising today and thinking what if it all goes crap.
So my focus is on music. I don't want my lovely family picking all the music- it will be horrific! (Light-hearted but honestly urgh).

@TiffanyLilly

Well if they let martyrs straight in then that covers half of mumsnet.

😆

I’m a Christian, so have chosen hymns rather than songs for my funeral.
“In heavenly love abiding” is my first choice. The lyrics include “My saviour has my treasure and he will walk with me”.
My treasure is my late DH, who died young 32 years ago, and my great hope is that I will walk with him in heaven.
Second is “Just as I am, without one plea, save that thy blood was shed for me, And that thou bidd’st me come to thee, Oh lamb of God, I come”.
It makes the point that none of us are good enough for heaven, or can bargain our way in - we get there solely by the love and sacrifice of Christ.
Finally, “The Day Thou gavest, Lord is ended, the darkness falls at thy behest”
A reminder that our temporary lives here are given by God, and that He determines when He will call us home.
I might just have a secular song as the mourners file out to the graveyard following my coffin - I’m quite tempted by Neil Sedaka’s “This will be our last song together”, which is gentle, nostalgic and a nice way to say goodbye!

Heal Me - Cast
Fire In My Heart - John Power
Sleeping Soul - John Power
Viva - John Power
Island - John Power
Guiding Star - Cast

All of which qualify as hymns anyway, as well as being music I love.

Perfect Day, Kirsty McColl version. It hasn’t all been perfect but there have been lots of good bits and I’d want my family to know I was glad that I spent it with them.

Getting cremated so might ask for Disco Inferno by The Trammps.

Pudmyboy · 13/08/2023 20:19

I want Peter Gabriel's Solsbury Hill at the end,
I love (Thank you for the) Days by either the Kinks or Kirsty McColl but I already sing that to my beloved little cat, he is still with me but I know our time is limited

Robinbuildsbears · 13/08/2023 20:19

I just listened to the second, it's a lovely version, isn't it? 😍

BlackJumpsuit · 13/08/2023 20:23

@UnctuousUnicorns

Yes!! I heard him perform it at the Royal Festival Hall once, goosebumps and big lump in throat 😭

Canned Heat. Not obvious perhaps, but then we had Walk Like an Egyptian for our wedding song in 1987 😄

weegiemum · 13/08/2023 20:33

Sh-boom from the Cars soundtrack

Haven't thought of anything else yet, but it would include something by the Barenaked Ladies.

risefromyourgrave · 13/08/2023 20:35

May It Be by Enya, LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring is my favourite film and I bloody love that song. I want people in floods of tears at my funeral, crying can be so cathartic.

FlamingYam · 13/08/2023 20:42

Miserere Mei, deus by Edward higginbottom as people are walking in to set the tone. I want tears!

Everything is borrowed by the streets (I came to this world with nothing and I leave with nothing but love)

There is another but I can't think for the life of me what it is.

Rockschooldropout · 13/08/2023 20:45

Life on Mars - Bowie
Wooden Ships - Crosby Stills and Nash
What is and what should never be - Led Zeppelin
Fire - Crazy world of Arthur Brown (I’m being cremated ) Everyone that knows me won’t be surprised I could be in such bad taste even in death !

FlamingYam · 13/08/2023 20:46

Calling all angels Jane sibery

Oh Miserere Mei Deus is such a good shout, the most beautiful song I have ever heard I think. I would love to hear it sung live in a cathedral.

Je regrette rien Edith Piaf

Great one!

FlamingYam · 13/08/2023 20:51

@risefromyourgrave thank you and yes, truly beautiful. You're so right, I imagine in a cathedral would be simply magnificent. It's my go to calming song.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 13/08/2023 21:00

Ashes to Ashes - David Bowie
Nobody Does it Better - Carly Simon
Ghostbusters - Ray Parker Jr

I think my mother wants this one. I like it too.

LorraineInSpain · 13/08/2023 21:04

For me:

Tom Paxton - Redemption Road
Laidy Maisery - Order and Chaos
Keane - Watch How You Go
Within Temptation - The Swan Song

I’m not religious, but I had to choose the music for my grandmother’s funeral when I was younger and I still like the choices.

Faure - Pavane
The Day Thou Gavest Lord Is Ended
Make Me A Channel Of Thy Peace
Lord Of All Hopefulness, Lord Of All Joy
Elgar - Nimrod
