Tell Me...What songs do you want at your funeral?

I know, bit morbid.
Tell me your songs (and why if you want cos songs are personal).

Today in my car I heard the song by Train - Drops of Jupiter. I think the lead person Pat wrote it after his mum died. And I thought "ummm could be on my shortlist."

Reasons why asking; I love music, need some inspiration, I always wonder why particular songs chosen when I'm at funeral.
Annoyingly my health running down hill. Treatment for leukaemia is lurking to put me (hopefully) into remission.
I am catastrophising today and thinking what if it all goes crap.
So my focus is on music. I don't want my lovely family picking all the music- it will be horrific! (Light-hearted but honestly urgh).

Bat out of hell as the curtains close. I am a huge Meatloaf fan and it would bring a smile to my children's faces.

A friend had that at his funeral...the vicar looked most perplexed.

The Next Life by Suede - bloody gorgeous song, yes everyone will probably be weeping as it's so mournfully beautiful (Brett Anderson wrote it about his mum dying), but hey ho. Will probably have an absolute banger put in for when they lower me down (really don't wanna add more carbon to the atmosphere) 😁

In My Life - Beatles.
Mr Tambourine Man - Bob Dylan.

shortandpaleandoldandugly · 13/08/2023 14:13

Another vote for In My Life but Bette Midler's version not The Beatles version of it.
Also A Song For You by The Carpenters and Over The Rainbow (Eva Cassidy's version).

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 13/08/2023 14:13

Stand by me the original version, I love that song.

The Nick Drake one they I've forgotten the name of 🙈😂

skyeisthelimit · 13/08/2023 14:23

Best wishes for your ill health issues and I hope you get sorted out.

My funeral instructions include these 3 at the moment, but they have changed over the years:

Who Wants To Live Forever - Queen

I've Never Been To Me - Charlene

You Raise Me Up - Brian Kennedy

skyeisthelimit · 13/08/2023 14:24

My brother wants Gun's n Roses Paradise City

Daisypod · 13/08/2023 14:28

@TotallyScouting we had Good riddance for our first song too, still together batter 27 years 😀 we wanted a short song and the lyrics are about life changing which fits and also ours was an unexpected relationship to everyone so it really fits.

Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road
Time grabs you by the wrist, directs you where to go
So make the best of this test, and don't ask why
It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time
It's something unpredictable
But in the end, it's right
I hope you had the time of your life

AnnieKayTee · 13/08/2023 14:37

Have you ever seen the rain by Creedance Clearwater. 🌦

RamblingEclectic · 13/08/2023 15:18

Blackmore Night has a few songs on my list like:
Now and Then which I think captures grief well even though it's a break up song,

No Second Chance I just find very fitting as it goes on about the lovely times, but time went on too fast and there's no second chance.

Where Are We Going From Here is simularly fitting, as is Gone with the wind: "Wind will sweep away, The traces I was here, A story in a teardrop, That's all I have to give"

Marianas Trench also has some songs on my list like Forget-me-not "if memories are shadows, we best not waste the light." Having a brain injury that already caused memory loss and increases my risks of dementia, this song has long tugged at me.

IAmcuriousyellow · 13/08/2023 15:24

We’re All Alone by Boz Scaggs for me

reallynow1 · 13/08/2023 15:28

Not morbid at all. I too do not want my family to choose....my show, my choice. My songs would be angels by Robbie, the garden (take that), a photo montage to let me go (gary barlow) and then as people go out hold up a light (take that). You can tell what my music tastes are 😁😁😁😁😁.

LaviniasBigBloomers · 13/08/2023 15:32

Shake it off by Florence and the Machine at the end.

I was listening to ol Elaine Paige earlier and am seriously considering Never Enough from the Greatest Showman as in the middle/contemplative song because I think it fits my approach to life.

Something more upbeat for coming in, maybe Somewhere in my heart by Aztec Camera, one of my favourite songs.

But I have a note on my note app on this and change them all the time! I hope your treatment goes well OP.

RenoDakota · 13/08/2023 15:35

All That by Sparks.

SpanielsMatter · 13/08/2023 15:37

Happy Phantom Tori Amos

LaviniasBigBloomers · 13/08/2023 15:43

Oh I completely forgot about L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.ON which has just come on my playlist. Maybe that would be the exit song. I really do think about this all the time!

SleepingStandingUp · 13/08/2023 15:48

Sing Together, also by Train. I just love the lyrics, about saying goodbye to everyone and waiting for them afterwards.
I will look up your Train song too.

Autumn Leaves by Ed Sheeran

I used to keep my best friend up to date with my chosen funeral songs, because I frankly wouldn't trust my sister's choices. She'd be about what SHOULD BE PLAYED AT A FUNERAL not what I'd pick. DH would have a decent bash as songs I love but wouldn't get something random like this Train song or Ed Sheeran.

My classical pieces would be "Spiegel im Spiegel* as the curtains closes and Cautionary Tail by Matteo Bocelli.

Loobyloo68 · 13/08/2023 15:59

I hope you dance can't remember who sings it

TallerThanAverage · 13/08/2023 15:59

I'm have a direct cremation but if I had a song it would be Closing Time by Leonard Cohen

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 13/08/2023 16:04

I'm hoping I can organise a 'funeral party' before I go; I have always thought it's a shame that all your loved ones turn up and say lovely things about you after you've gone, I want to be there!

I plan to have my own list of songs, that include 9000 miles by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Hell's Bells by AC/DC and Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. And Show Me The Way To Go Home, in honour of my dad.

I seem to have lost my list somewhere, must be on my old computer! You've reminded me that I need to keep it updated, thank you!

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 13/08/2023 16:04

oh and Black Bird, by Altar Bridge. That'll get us all crying!

Floralnomad · 13/08/2023 16:06

I’m not having a funeral but my mum had ‘Don’t let the sun go down on me ‘ by George Michael and Roxettes ‘ it must have been love ‘ .

Sussurations · 13/08/2023 16:07
