Tell Me...What songs do you want at your funeral?

I know, bit morbid.
Tell me your songs (and why if you want cos songs are personal).

Today in my car I heard the song by Train - Drops of Jupiter. I think the lead person Pat wrote it after his mum died. And I thought "ummm could be on my shortlist."

Reasons why asking; I love music, need some inspiration, I always wonder why particular songs chosen when I'm at funeral.
Annoyingly my health running down hill. Treatment for leukaemia is lurking to put me (hopefully) into remission.
I am catastrophising today and thinking what if it all goes crap.
So my focus is on music. I don't want my lovely family picking all the music- it will be horrific! (Light-hearted but honestly urgh).

Dance me to the end of time. Leonard Cohen
And Its a sin. Pet shop boys.

Snipples · 13/08/2023 19:08

I'd like Don't Stop Me Now by Queen, possibly an instrumental version but that song is a belter. But none of this wear bright colours nonsense. I want them all in veils wailing, why god why, it's too soon! And proper snottery tears.

I'm hoping I can organise a 'funeral party' before I go; I have always thought it's a shame that all your loved ones turn up and say lovely things about you after you've gone, I want to be there!

I plan to have my own list of songs, that include 9000 miles by Mary Chapin Carpenter, Hell's Bells by AC/DC and Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd. And Show Me The Way To Go Home, in honour of my dad.

I seem to have lost my list somewhere, must be on my old computer! You've reminded me that I need to keep it updated, thank you!

I know someone that did that. I couldn't attend, I didn't like some people who would be there and I didn't want them to goad me. He was very upset I later realised. I didn't think I meant anything much to him. I phoned a few weeks later as I was aware how sick he was and he seemed really pleased with what I had to say. He died well, it can be a challenge when you know.

Thank you for the Days - kirstie mccoll version
Dance with my father
All things bright and beautiful

KatieLGriff · 13/08/2023 19:13

Days by Kirsty MacColl and These are the Days of Our Lives by Queen.
Both always make me cry though so perhaps I'd think of something a bit more upbeat!!

I quite like the idea of requesting they sing along with Kylie and do the locomotion, forming a conga line around the aisles.

If there is an afterlife, I couldn't think of anything more amusing to look down upon! 😂

on the topic of parties I can’t remember the name but a social media influencer who knows she is living with terminal cancer really had a “fun”real which looked brilliant. She even had Dawn French as the Vicar of Dibley doing the eulogy.

In my church you can request Hymns, you don't chose the Priest does in the end.

Do you attend a Satanic church? If not what happens if the Christian clergy refuses? Will your family have to get in humanists at another venue or something?

Nellie the Elephant. I think the words"packed her trunk and said good buy to the circus" are quite poignant. And "off she went with a trumpety trump" are becoming more fitting the older I get!

This made me laugh!

Only last week I attended a church funeral with a small jazz band playing for the coffin coming in. Then a recording of Fly Me To The Moon for going out.

My parents were wardens at a C of E church for years and unless it was something really inappropriate for a church the requests of the family where always listened to.

Yes sorry I didn’t mean to suggest your choices where inappropriate.

i know the vicar drew the line at Highway to hell being played in the church once which was fair enough!

TiffanyLilly · 13/08/2023 19:30

I was thinking more that Ozzy was a Satanist.

Odd for a Christian church.

I used to say Going on up to the Spirit in the Sky but then I decided I’m more likely going down as I no longer believe in the spirit.
Definitely some Queen, and Brown Eyed Girl.

My friend is dying and has told us to expect some “right bangers” and dance music at her funeral. She will have picked the perfect songs.

larkstar · 13/08/2023 19:37

I'm notoriously irreligious and have made it clear that if it were down to me then there wouldn't be a funeral of any kind. However - I won't be there so it's up to those that care to do whatever they want. I've already said that if there has to be something I have a recording I made in 2013 of the birdsong early one morning from my bedroom window - it's mainly blackbirds you can hear. I've had it on my mp3 player for years - it's 3hrs long and I often listen to it at night to help me drift off to sleep: my wife and kids know about this and know where the file is.

I often cringe, at people who think everyone goes to heaven because they did one nice thing in their life. It's not really the time to say something to a grieving person who is convinced their un religious family is with angels in the sky. I say nothing. I say this as someone who believes I will be off to Pergatory at best myself btw, only special people who are absolute Saints and Martyrs go straight to heaven.

wutheringkites · 13/08/2023 19:48

@TiffanyLilly

Well if they let martyrs straight in then that covers half of mumsnet.

You are the first person I have ever seen who even knows Boz Scaggs is. I bought Silk Degrees when it first came out, it was the first cd I ever bought when I began to replace my vinyl collection and one of the first albums I bought on iTunes. It is my favourite album ever - I could (and do) listen to it over and over. He is very underrated imo. Nice to know somebody else out there likes him too.

More love for Boz here too. Although it's less suitable than We're All Alone, my list has to include Lido Shuffle, not least so people can sing. Have a listen to the Dukes of September version.

Keeping it to three songs would be a challenge, but I'd add David Bowie and Iggy Pop doing a live version of The Passenger (probably banned for funerals for being sweary) and the Afghan Whigs Oriole.
