I don't think I've EVER been bored

Really, never Confused

With access to the internet for 30 years now there's always books/articles - anything 🤷‍♀️ to read

Plus going out for walks, tv watching, playing games, dogs to cuddle

I just can't imagine ever being bored

Ohh that's sad to read.

I'd ask why, but I think you should start a new thread.

You'll get lots of support and space for a moan. Post in relationships maybe? Or mental health. All here to get you out of this fug.

Hopefully see you on another thread ❤️

Thank you ❤️

I think that if you have a rich hinterland then you don't get bored because your mind can occupy itself as it's got a wealth of resources.

So you might be waiting for an appointment and instead of going on your phone, you'll think about a book you've read, a philosophical debate, a trip you have planned
...

If you're in a tedious meeting, you'll plan a feast you'd like to prepare, replay an opera in your head, or plan a project you'd like to tackle.

So not being bored isn't a matter of being constantly stimulated by your phone, the Internet or Netflix but having the mental resources to be constantly absorbed in something.

Well, that's what I think.

I don't have ADHD, but I'm bored a substantial proportion of my time. Reading online is great for a couple of hours, but doesn't work all day. Quite often my eyes are too tired to read. Trying to watch Netflix now, but can't quite concentrate...

You're welcome ❤️

Every thread on MN, someone claims they or a family member has ADHD.

Or perimenopause ...

I do get bored, but that doesn't matter really.

Boredom provides a bit of downtime from the hustle and bustle of life. Sometimes life is so busy and full of things to be done that you need to just have nothing to do, or something mindlessly dull to do (cleaning shelves at work... so boring)... get bored, get thinking, breathe a bit.

WunWun · 12/08/2023 20:36

There are definitely boring threads places on the internet..

LaurieFairyCake · 12/08/2023 20:40

So it's definitely not because I'm amazing Grin

I do think there are dull patches (work meetings) but I don't get bored because my mind just goes somewhere else - suspended attention, so I'm listening 'enough' but my brain is thinking other more interesting thoughts.

Also I'm really happy in my own company and I try to minimise MASSIVELY doing stuff I don't want to do - so I rarely clean (can't be arsed)

And I don't wait for anything - if there's a traffic jam I turn round, if I have to wait anywhere and there's no signal or it's inconvenient I leave

I don't think it's so much "never getting bored".

It's more being able to find something to do because you're bored of what you were doing.

So you go for a walk. It's generally because you were bored of what you were doing before.

You get up and go and get your book. Because you were bored of the activity you were doing.

Being bored isn't a bad thing. Not being able to channel your energy when you're bored into an appropriate activity is the issue.

This post makes it sound like you actually do get bored very easily and so find ways to avoid that.

It's fine. But if you would rather drive than sit in traffic it's because sitting in traffic boring and you'd rather not!

That's not judgement. I'm also very happy in my own company and massively avoid things I don't want to do.

I also get a wandering mind as struggle to focus in meetings etc. I really struggle to watch a film!!!

But like you I can easily find ways to keep myself amused.

If you didn't avoid situations with no signal is it because you get bored?

PuppyMonkey · 12/08/2023 21:28

I mean, you can’t always turn around in a traffic jam. Sometimes you have to stay in the queue if you want to get home? Grin

Good point. It's bizarre to think everyone can just stand up and leave every situation they don't like and go and do something more amenable instead.

coreas · 12/08/2023 22:12

I don't get bored because my mind is very basic and I'm happy with minimal input

Driving the wrong way down the motorway to escape a traffic jam is illegal.... sometimes you are just stuck and it sucks.

But as a person who gets bored occasionally... what do I know?

(Also... try sentry duty! 😂you want it to be boring but hate it being boring simultaneously)

BatheInTheLight · 12/08/2023 22:19

Sounds like your impatient OP, as well as being supposedly immune to boredom!

I think it's all relative. Many rich, famous people for example would find my life boring in the main, but I've just become accustomed to a pretty ordinary, working class life. A life which is punctuated with relatively brief periods of activities which are enjoyable but unfortunately work and managing small people is the order of the day most of the time.

RumNotRun · 12/08/2023 23:20

This by a previous poster sums things up for me

"I can't be bothered to do anything but I really want to do something."

I love reading but sometimes can't be bothered, I don't feel like watching TV, cleaning, going for a walk etc, so my go to is just to nap. A bit difficult when I'm at work though 😁

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 16/08/2023 10:07

I find some things fantastically dull, but I'm rarely bored. My brain fills itself with things I'd rather be thinking about instead; that's how I while away the tedium.

Exactly. Finding a situation or experience uninteresting or tedious doesn't necessarily mean you have to be bored. You have the whole contents of your mind to entertain you.
