I don't think I've EVER been bored

Really, never Confused

With access to the internet for 30 years now there's always books/articles - anything 🤷‍♀️ to read

Plus going out for walks, tv watching, playing games, dogs to cuddle

I just can't imagine ever being bored

No, it was off the back of another thread where a teenager was bored - saw it and though 'Huh, I don't think I'm ever bored' 🤔

People had different boredom thresholds though, DH seems to get bored if he's not doing something usually outside and I can always tell as he paces and keeps looking out of the window, this usually happens if the weather isn't good, he isn't so interested in browsing the internet or watching TV

PuppyMonkey · 12/08/2023 16:39

Surely there are things you’ve found boring, OP? Books, films, MN threads? The ironing? Cooking? Your DH?

SwedishEdith · 12/08/2023 16:40

A lot of work is tedious so I find that boring. Conversations I have to have with particular people for particular reasons and the notes I then have to make to make sure I follow the right process. That's boring and I get bored doing it. Brushing my teeth, filling up the car with petrol etc, all boring and I got bored doing them. When I am really feeling bored, just reading an interesting book or article won't stop that feeling. Maybe it's akin to mild depression and people who claim to never be bored have also never experienced depressive moods? Maybe it's not the same thing at all but I definitely have an almost painful feeling of boredom in some work meetings or visits from my in-laws.

Ladybug14 · 12/08/2023 16:41

You've never been bored ?

But have you ever been boring?

Grin
PuttingDownRoots · 12/08/2023 16:42

Never been stuck in a traffic jam?

Charrington · 12/08/2023 16:44

Are you more extrovert or introvert op?

I’ve never been bored by myself even if there’s nothing to do because I can just sit and think. But I get bored, or something like boredom, at parties or in groups when there isn’t something actively interesting going on but I can’t just disappear into my own head.

Or I’ve been bored in hospital where I’m too sick to scroll on my phone but there’s a constant stream of people coming by so you can’t even doze.

MummyInTheNecropolis · 12/08/2023 16:49

I like my own company and enjoy reading, pottering about, cooking, doing DIY so rarely get bored at home. I do however get bored waiting for things, I absolutely hate hospital waiting rooms, theme park queues, queuing at passport control etc and get really bored doing those things, even if I have a book to read. I also often find inset day training mindnumbingly boring.

JaninaDuszejko · 12/08/2023 16:57

Things that I find boring:
Waiting for a delayed plane or train or doctors appointment
Listening to my teenager explain in great detail for the third time today why Taylor Swift is the greatest lyricist of the21st century
Sitting in a work meeting where my presence is unnecessary and I have other more important things I have to do
Insomnia
Shopping for handbags with my mother while she carefully checks the number of sections in every bag in John Lewis
Traffic jams
Being forced to watch DSs favourite youtube video of someone pranking someone else again and again and again
Having someone who works for me arguing with me when they are wrong

Actually being bored is good for your brain, it makes you more creative so never being bored (e.g. because you're constantly on your phone) is not actually a good thing.

Batalax · 12/08/2023 17:03

Op, I agree I’m never bored. There is always something to do. There are so many things I don’t get round to doing despite only working 3 days a week and having grown up children.

I remember being bored as a child, but I don’t think I have ever been since I was about 16 and in charge of my own life. When the kids were young I would have been bored out of my mind staying in the house with them all the time - so I didn’t. We went out and about and met up with friends.

I really don’t understand people who say they are bored.

MotherofGorgons · 12/08/2023 17:06

Not even when doing housework?

Stompythedinosaur · 12/08/2023 17:10

If you'd like to try it, I can invite you around when my dc are "putting on a show".

WibblyWobblyTimeyWimeyStuff · 12/08/2023 17:10

I don't get bored either @LaurieFairyCake Never ever. Always something to do. Is there a saying somewhere 'only boring people get bored?'

BananaStraw · 12/08/2023 17:12

I've been thinking about this thread whilst stuck in traffic. It's a really interesting thing, I think. There's no real consensus about what being bored actually is.
So yes, there are things and people that i find boring, but I go and find something else to do.
I can also escape quite readily into my own head and it's making me wonder whether a more introverted nature like mine helps you bypass boredom.
I agree with posters who talk about boredom being a springboard to creativity. And how content one is with simple things is perhaps a lot to do with it.

So a more adrenaline-seeking individual might find me boring, as I am content with what I have and I'm not rushing off to look for an adrenaline 'fix'. But equally too much time in the presence of my in laws has me cutting visits short, etc. Am I bored then? Possibly.

I said upthread that i don't get bored but there are definitely things that I don't want to do. I don't label them boring though.

I find the whole matter very interesting and pondering on this and other MN threads quite often keep me entertained. Good subjects for conversations with some of my friends and family occasionally too.

MotherofGorgons · 12/08/2023 17:06

Not even when doing housework?

Personally, no. I do lots of thinking, or listening to music or podcasts.

JaninaDuszejko · 12/08/2023 17:22

MotherofGorgons · 12/08/2023 17:06

Housework you can do things alongside to entertain you like listen to music/podcasts/radio. The worst boredom is when you have to pay attention to something because soneone you love is wittering on about it but you aren't actually interested in it Minecraft.

whatisforteamum · 12/08/2023 17:25

I get painfully bored and a bit depressed about it too.
I'm awaiting an ADHD assessment though and I stopped driving so lots of fun activities are no longer available to me.
That said I love work and can hyperfocus on it and cleaning my home, gardening cooking.
I still think I'm too hyperactive though.
Thank heavens for the internet.

Lightningspeed · 12/08/2023 17:29

LauderSyme · 12/08/2023 16:27

@Lightningspeed Bless you it's horrible and rubbish, isn't it? I spend a lot of my free time online but sometimes I just can't maintain focus and concentration for more than a few seconds cos everything feels soooo boooring!

Precisely. Sometimes everything is irritating. You do have do to the hungry or tired, lonely thing though, sometimes that is the problem. I have a hard time feeling hungry for some reason (despite being fat) , so when I can't sleep or I'm very irritable it's time for a meal. I don't have many answers though, maybe one of those rabbit holes will provide one day haha.

SouthLondonMum22 · 12/08/2023 17:31

People are just different, aren’t they?

The most bored I ever felt was maternity leave yet some love maternity leave and never feel bored.

GalileoHumpkins · 12/08/2023 17:32

WibblyWobblyTimeyWimeyStuff · 12/08/2023 17:10

Yes there is and it's utter self serving, superior bollocks.

Lightningspeed · 12/08/2023 17:36

People on here will look down at other social media, but that Christmas when moldies was exposed was a shit show, people were glued to the drama. I think I only had a basic grasp of it tbh because wasn't involved, but it was funny to watch. People adore drama despite saying its beneath them.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 12/08/2023 17:36

I'm never bored either. I find it kind of hard to imagine how I could be bored tbh. I reckon I could sit in an empty room for several hours with nothing to occupy me but my thoughts and still not be bored!

Twattergy · 12/08/2023 17:39

I often love peace and quiet and a clear day...so what might be someone else's boredom is my relaxation.

dizzydizzydizzy · 12/08/2023 17:41

Times I have been bored: waiting in A&E. Very uncomfortable, totally unstimulating, sometimes scary and you never know how long the wait is going to be.

When cleaning/tidying - such mindless work. I try to listen to the radio or music but I would always rather think of something else I'd rather too.

Meetings at work - just YAWN

When I broke my leg- there's only so much reading and tv watching I can enjoy in one day

Batalax · 12/08/2023 17:57

There are times I’d rather be doing something else, but just have to get on with it. I’m not sure I’d call that boredom though as I’m still occupied, maybe frustration, dislike, resentment perhaps.
Isn’t boredom wondering what can I do now, I’ve got nothing to occupy myself with, and being restless?
