...the Brexit vote, given how it has disadvantaged those children without dual nationality?

I'm from NI, so very fortunate that mine still have FOM. I'd be raging if anyone took that away from them.

I'm still fucking livid about it to be honest.

RosaKim · 09/08/2023 22:47

Couldn’t give a fuck.

Just get a visa it’s not that difficult.

I can’t believe people are still harping on about this.

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/08/2023 22:44

I think you didn't understand who went to and worked in the EU pre Brexit. Most were not the posh, chateau owning folks you think.

The posh, rich, chateau owning/borrowing folk are still having it away. Brexit didn't impact them. It did damage the ability of poorer UK citizens to work and study in the EU.

This. It was ordinary, often working class young people who could just go off and work abroad- in a bar for example. The wealthy are not affected.

It is difficult. What planet do you live on?

@TooBigForMyBoots engineering then.
Poorer kids need access to affordable housing.not many go study and work in the EU. Your reasons are exaggerated and you have no idea about WC poorer people.

I am WC poorer people.😆

That's why I'm so pissed off that other WC poorer people have had their lives made more difficult by the end of FoM.

It is. My husband and our children are all EU passport holders, it has been very very difficult for me to gain a temporary visa to move with them to an EU country.

I think some people's definition of working class is rather different to mine.

TooBigForMyBoots · 09/08/2023 23:01

Comedycook · 09/08/2023 22:40

Oh come on...stop trying to convince us that working class kids in the UK were all heading off to the Alps for a gap year or looking forward to an internship at an investment bank in Europe. It's utter nonsense and I'm not falling for it.

I'm not trying to convince you of anything of the sort. Stop pretending that only the posh and wealthy used FoM or needed it. As I said the posh and rich are grand. They don't have to worry about costs.🤷‍♀️

The Freedom of Movement has been removed from low and middle income people.

Two blokes from my school went to be labourers in Spain. Someone else worked in hotels in France.

You seem to live in a little bubble where only stereotypical upper MC people can board planes.

Such a set up question! If I was Irish I'd be more concerned about the farmers than others fom. So many are going to be ruined keeping up with the expectations if the Eu. That's obviously a whole other thread!

No they’re not.

If they are British, now they are only British. Not European anymore.

Of course they are! If they're British then they're also European. They're from the European continent, not the Asian continent, African continent etc. They're not part of the European Union any more, but if they're British then they're European.
This is basic geography.

Comedycook · 09/08/2023 23:16

I think these boards are full of people who like to describe themselves as working class but they are actually solidly middle class. It's just less cool to say that.

This is such a prejudiced thing to say. Basically you've decided if someone doesn't think the way you think someone WC should, they can't be WC.

I don't understand how you can be so rude as to decide you're the spokesperson for all WC people, you get to decide who is WC based only on your own narrow views.

Comedycook · 09/08/2023 23:23

Everyone has their own views on what constitutes class.

What constitutes your view on what makes someone WC? Council house? Earning less than £15 per hour? Working class parents? Grand parents?

Yours is a narrow stereotype it appears.

You have ignored those who asked you what your definition is.

I think you need to check your geography a bit there 🤣 You seem to have missed what being in the EU actually means! We didn't leave Europe. Hth.

My definition is irrelevant. We will all have different definitions. I'm just pointing that they may be at odds.

You might have your own definition, but it's wrong if your definition is based on 'not going abroad for work', which is what you've said/implied upthread.

You can't just invent a definition to fit your prejudices.

I’m in ireland, Irish born, and I feel sorry for British kids who won’t be able to access study and labour opportunities the way my kids can. But I think ireland has always been more outward looking as a nation anyway. Here all Leaving Cert students have to take a modern foreign language (unless they have an exemption, or do a LC Applied) whereas language learning seem to be in decline in Britain. Fewer than 8000 students take A Level French, whereas over 21000 students took Leaving Cert French last year, and we’ve only a population of 5 million.
