DD took morning after pill then had sex again!

Is there a chance she could get pregnant? She absolutely does not want to be pregnant but for some reason thought that taking MAP once would protect her from all unplanned pregnancies this cycle. She is in a right state. She's 18 and her boyfriend is lovely (also 18); they both agree they are too young for parenthood. She would have an abortion if she was pregnant but would obviously rather not have to go through this. The unprotected sex (apparently the condom fell off) happened only a few days after her period finished, so she took it at the most effective time from what I can tell. She's now coming up to when her period would normally be due but has been told it might be late. She had unprotected sex the second time about 2 weeks after the first time / after she took the MAP.
I can't find out if Levonelle stops ovulation entirely or just delays it, different websites saying different things, so I don't know what to say to her!

I could weep with the stress!

Thank you

Can't she just go on the pill ? Injection ? Coil ? And condoms ?

Can we just fuck off with the mean comments? I hate the nasty comments about a teenager barely an adult. Adult women in their 30s do silly mistakes like this but of course on MN we love to get on our high and mighty horse.

Yes she could get pregnant and needs 2 methods of contraception to be safe in the future condom + and something else reliable.

I took The Pill for 25 years non-stop. Never had one 'mistake'.

As they say, The Pill is only as reliable as the person taking it...

BlastedIce · 11/08/2023 12:08

And how do you propose that you stop her having an adult relationship?

Well, you wouldn't stop her, obviously. But just because she can, doesn't mean she should.
I suspect this girl will only learn the hard way. But you know what they say: 'Play stupid games, win stupid prizes' 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thats a nice story but the OPs daughter isn’t on the pill, she was using condoms, and she probably wasn’t responsible for putting the condom on. The error misunderstanding the morning after pill is obviously daft but the contraceptive pill and condoms are not the same thing. The boyfriend was equally responsible for the condom.

What makes you think that? She says she’ll abort. So if that’s the case why not just say “I’m pregnant”?

She’s says that now. Doesn’t mean she actually would. It all just sounds a bit too bizarre having these conversations with you about her sex life and so in-depth. All this about a condom falling off. She sounds quite immature and unless you think about an implant for her then my bet is she will end u pregnant, although I think she already is.

Didn’t you already say this upthread? She said she’d abort so what would be the point.

Saying and doing….

It’s more bizarre to lie about being pregnant and make an elaborate story to reveal it, than it is for a teenage girl to discuss an error with their mum.

Yes, I know she isn't on the pill... my point is, if she's having that active a sex life, she probably should be on the pill, coil or similar.
When I was 17, I did my research and took MYSELF off to the GP to get put on The Pill because I wanted to protect MYSELF from getting pregnant.

The fact OP's daughter isn't on the pill, coupled with the fact her boyfriend doesn't seem to know what size condoms to buy/how to keep one on, tells me that they need to have a grown up conversation about contraception - or stop having sex!

Hormonal contraception isn’t the right choice for everyone. Neither is the coil. They just need to use condoms properly in future if she doesn’t want to go on the pill or similar. It’s great that you’ve never made a contraception mistake but some humans do, I’m sure OPs daughter has learn a lesson from her stupid errors here, hopefully the boyfriend has to.

That’s such a wonderful story about YOURSELF, but this thread isn’t about YOU.

I’m not sure why YOU think the daughter and her boyfriend will stop having sex?

CurlyhairedAssassin · 11/08/2023 15:05

It's a fair point that that poster made, Blasted. Having sex as a young adult brings young adult responsibilties, and that is making sure you're not going to get pregnant. Pill, implant, condoms. We all need to take personal responsibility for it, NOT your parent. Yes, when we are teens SOME of us may make a silly mistake, have unprotected sex and seek out the morning after pill. But most of THOSE people don't then make exactly the same mistake again a little bit later. The fact that mum is now having to advise on this just shows that they really weren't ready to have sex in the first place.

It was a ridiculous comment and the couple are NOT going to stop having sex.

I mean really??

The op hasn't been back since yesterday and you're all still arguing about it. Lol . Go out, get some air, it's the weekend

Yepyepye · 09/08/2023 18:56

I agree she has been extremely foolish and I have no idea why she thought this. I don't think she saw the logic that if this crazy reasoning of hers worked then women would just take one monthly morning after pill instead of taking it daily. Some of the sources seem to say it stops ovulation but is that not the case?

I have tried to be as open and honest with her as possible as I was raised in an extremely conservative, religious culture (no way would I have told my mum anything like this) and we are still in touch with family who are very devout. I don't know if somehow this cultural influence has impacted on her in some way. I agree she is too immature to be having sex but I can't stop her - she is literally an adult (just).

With all due respect, if you can't talk to her openly about this, then you need to get her down to a family planning clinic where they will. Because for the moment, it sounds like she doesn't even have a grasp on the basics.
Does she realise she shout get tested for STIs too?

She's not mature enough to be having sex. Particularly not if she's felt the need to go running to you about it all now

Yeah, this. Smh.

ColonelSpondleClagnut · 11/08/2023 17:40

Just another message of support for you both. I was a complete pillock at that age (and until quite a bit older too!) and I sort of remember what it's like to think you know stuff and then realise you're completely out of your depth.

Im glad your DD can talk to you though. That's worth all the stress in the world to have that 🙃

Luke1054 · 11/08/2023 18:17

But come on. Let’s do a vote. How many times have you seen a condom fall off.

Her DD likes the boaby so she will carry on regardless. You can't stop her. Encouraging her to have safe sex is the best approach as she's an adult now.

Something tells me they won't have learned.

I suggested the pill for the simple fact that the boy doesn't seem to know what he's doing re condoms, so the girl needs to take the responsibility. Or take these 'risks' every time.

Jumpingthruhoops · 11/08/2023 20:42

Royaly82 · 11/08/2023 09:33

These comments are why a lot of you have daughters that would never come to you for help after making a mistake. Good grief!

It's lovely that your daughter is able to talk to you. I have four and can I just ask you to not repeat any of the things most of these 'lady's' are suggesting (not that I think you are that stupid)
Maybe discuss other better forms of contraception like the coil going forward and remind her she can always come to you when she needs to

I think the opposite is true.

My dad's idea of the 'birds and bees' chat was to tell me in no uncertain terms that: 'If I ended up pregnant at 16, my bags would be on the doorstep'.

Yes, my dad was strict but also the most kind, loving man, so I doubt very much he would have gone through this and that it was merely a 'deterrent. But, needless to say, I wasn't about to find out.

Everyone on here must be absolutely perfect in every aspect of their lives the way they go on. Sitting behind your screens preaching away.

I’m 35 now but on my first time at 18 we used a condom and it came off. I got the MAP to cover myself. Wish I’d been brave enough to discuss with my Mum though!
At the grand age of 32 having been with my partner 7 years and using condoms for 6 of those years (same brand, same type) another condom came off. We don’t know when or how but that’s what happened. Sometimes it just does! This time I didn’t get the MAP and it happened to be my most fertile day of the month. We were going to start trying later that year anyway so saved us months of trying!

Just because it didn’t happen to you, doesn’t mean it was stupid or idiotic. It sounds like advice online isn’t accurate at all. Yes it was risky behaviour but cut the poor girl some slack, it takes two to tango!

Not perfect. We just understand that sexual intercourse can result in pregnancy.
