The immigrant barge - what’s actually wrong with using it?

1000 replies

NC523 · 08/08/2023 18:16

Educate me!

I looked at pics from the inside, it all looks very much like standard student accommodation to me, including common rooms/relaxation areas/health support on board. Residents can go on & off the boat, it’s passed fire etc safety and been used to house people in lots of other situations. I don’t understand why people think it’s not ok. Can anyone explain please?

It's a pox ridden, firetrap. It's unfit for any other purpose than being a monument to the costly stupidity and performative cruelty of the Tories.

Luckydip1 · 13/08/2023 16:25

Anyway, if you think immigration is bad now, just wait until climate change real kicks in, there will be huge migrations of people.

Oh don't worry about that, UK and others will sink the boats at sea, long before they get to UK/mainland Europe.

There will be electoral gain in doing so.. :(

You literally are suggesting anyone can come though. I posted what the requirements are to be classified as seeking asylum. Anyone who says they are gay or doesn’t support the government could be at risk in many countries . How can you say otherwise?
People in boats are coming from a home country that is monumentally fucked. Essentially they are all economic migrants because they don’t see a future there.

Ukraines have a short term problem in their country and will want to return to Ukraine when it’s over. It’s mostly women and children whist the men are defending Ukraine. Nothing to do with them being “not brown”.

I thought it was agreed by all that economic migrants as I have been and Rishi has been were perfectly fine?

It's not up to me to clarify your interpretation of my posts as obviously I don't know how your thought processes work (However, I'm flattered that you seem to think I am a mind-reader !)

No-one else seems to have a problem.

@EllenVannen why are you so scared of saying you don't want the UK to take any asylum seekers?

jgw1 · 13/08/2023 16:41

Luckydip1 · 13/08/2023 15:07

These people crossing the channel are what you would call fussy asylum seekers, they have considered all the countries in Europe and thought, no none of this are good enough for me, I'll pay a complete stranger £5k, to cross the channel in a fourth hand rubber dingy to get to England where they are so soft they will put me up in a nice b and b and get a cooked breakfast in the morning and spending money.

At the risk of repeating myself it was established in a court case of 1999 and upheld on appeal to the HoLs that any countries an asylum seeker has transited on the way to the UK can be ignored when considering their asylum application.

More details of the law here.

Dinghies in the Channel - Illegal entrants and immigration offences - Levins

There is much controversy in the media at the moment about migrants crossing the Channel in dinghies. In this article, we set out to explain some of the relevant law and clear up some misconceptions. This article is intended to be a general commentary...

It is a wonder isn't it why Rishi "stop the boats" Sunak doesn't have a chat with Rishi "increase climate disater" Sunak and agree which is the government policy.

@jgw1 that law is a gift to asylum seekers, no one wonder they are coming here thick and fast.

EllenVannen · 13/08/2023 16:47

Alexandra2001 · 12/08/2023 15:38

Rubbish.
Your own link states "Several jews led away to safety by the Police" tiny numbers of racists does not make the Germany state (in 1921) anti-Semitic.

The Nazi state did things by stealth and once they had power, they could crush descension, often with death.

Who on here would have stood up and tried to stop a Jewish family being deported or Romany family or a disabled person or a socialist?

The vast vast majority would all stay silent because to protest would mean you and your loved ones would all die.

How else do you think Xi or Putin stay in power.

@Alexandra2001
You may choose to believe that Germany (and Europe) wasn't anti-semitic prior to the Nazi regime.
However, this fact is well documented and started in earnest with Martin Luther.in the 16th Century.
Initially Marin Luther was ambivilent towards the Jews. However, when he realised that they went not going to embrace and convert to his new Heretical religion he started to villify them.

In 1543 he said “ Let the magistrates burn their synogues and whatever escapes be covered wih sand and mud. Let them be forced to work and if this avails nothing we will be forced to expel them like dogs. (Concerning the Jews and their Lies 1543)

In 1998 The Bavarian Lutheran Churches issued an apology which said, in part;:

“ The Evangelical Luthern Church in Bavaria confesses that, as a Lutheran and German Church it parcipitated in the guilt of the Holocaust.
It dissociates itself from Martin Luther's antisimetic writings and from anti-Judaism in Lutheran Theology”

You might like to look it up.

@jgw1 don't blame the PM, he is only, giving the electorate what they want which is less immigration and help with the cost of living. Finally the extortionate green policies are being addressed.

I’m pretty sure Labour are following with dropping ULEZ, it’s not like they’re standing apart on that

On the law in pp I agree smugglers will be feeling happier with the wrangling in the U.K. over this.

The longer we delay, get it stuck in courts, the more Labour oppose and various groups are invested in stopping legal change the more £ they get

TooBigForMyBoots · 13/08/2023 16:51

The PM is not lessening immigration. He's wasting money on stupid, shitty schemes that cost a fortune, while immigration is increasing.

inamarina · 13/08/2023 15:59

How is she talking nonsense? So you don’t believe that a significant change to a society can cause tension and division?
She’s not saying that we shouldn’t offer asylum, but to pretend that the only people who see any potential issues are racists anyway and best to be ignored won’t help anyone.

Yep. Even Putin can see why causing mass movement of people destabilises societies

He’s not provoking it to help Hmm

@jgw1 that law is a gift to asylum seekers, no one wonder they are coming here thick and fast.

Given the same law applies to all those countries who are signatories to the 1951 convention, I am not sure what your point is?

By all means argue for the UK to leave the convention though if you think those who wrote and agreed it were wrong.

In the interest of factual accuracy does the UK take more or less asylum seekers than other equivalent countries?

Surely if Rishi Sunak wanted to give the electorate what they want he would implement the policies in the manifesto in which he took to the country in a General Election?

I am increasingly convinced that it isn't in the governments interests to reduce immigration.

Look at the EU - once we left it was a whole lot harder to blame the EU for all the countries ills. If the boat crossing stops, who would the Tories blame them for their destruction of the country?

Repeatly on this thread we have had posters complaining about a lack of housing and asylum seekers jumping the queue, without stopping to wonder why there are more empty homes than there are people in need of a home.

If Sunak was actually interested in helping the country he would pay the same proportion of his income in tax as a teacher or nurse has to, but of course he doesn't.

Australia is a signatory.

They have used Nauru to get boats to zero.

I've no idea. Why don't you ask the authority that erected them?

But this hotel wasn't and they didn't want to share rooms. They think they should have 5* living. Their entitlement is outrageous.

This caller says she is 'incensed' by asylum seekers who complained about sleeping four to a room made for two.

They probably want Sunak to pay differently to everyone else with on the same tax code.

It’s on repeat this empty house and tax stuff, not sure if they answer any direct questions
