Lighthearted thread!

Well you're completely wrong about Nicola Walker, she's amazing. I think the thing is in the last few years she's had a few parts where she's basically a deeply troubled hardworking professional with a lot of family bother (Last Tango, Unforgotten, The Split) so it can start to feel samey but IMO that's no reflection on her acting - it means she's been cast because the director wants her to bring a similar energy I guess. Would be fun to see her cast as a completely different type of person.

Keira Knightley isn't really suited to acting, she smirks all the time! Not sure how.

If you want to see Danny Dyer doing a great job, watch Spy. He's hilarious.

Need to rack my brains for who else is crap.

Emma Watson gets my nomination too. So wooden.

Mine too she's bad ,also Charlie from casualty ,equally as bad as Emma.

Fraaahnces · 05/08/2023 14:38

Nicole Kidman. Simpers, wrinkles her nose and attempts to be little girly/ingenue. She’s actually about eleven feet tall, and if her face could move and she quit being cutesy, she’d be far less irritating.

I really like her acting, just the pauses were starting to grate. Maybe I need to try and work past it, because I do really like her otherwise!

VioletLemon · 05/08/2023 15:02

Harrison Ford
Emma Thomson
Helen Mirren
Daniel Radcliffe

Jackiebrambles · 05/08/2023 15:29

I’d like to defend Daniel Mays I think he’s a brilliant actor!!
He was amazing in Red Riding (that was bloody dark) and Line of Duty. He was a bit daft in that Xmas movie from last year.

I want to like Nicole Kidman but having watched her in both Big little lies and nine strangers recently, she seems to be just playing wooden Nicole kidman. At one point in big little lies she started talking in her Australian accent!

Durrrr not Danny Dyer - Jason Statham! Got my brain crossed

ScrambledSmegs · 05/08/2023 16:52

I need to stand up for Danny Dyer a bit - he was typecast as geezer at the start of his career and consequently got a bit lazy (I blame Nick Love).

However Harold Pinter liked him, rated him as an actor and he was cast in 3 of his plays. I saw him in The Homecoming at the Almeida years ago, ok so it was a good cast anyway but IIRC he was very good on stage.

romany4 · 05/08/2023 16:54

Brad Pitt and Nicholas Cage..
Just fuck off

No it mean he auditions for those roles and usually gets them. He would have no chance getting a role of an intellectual type character.

You've just defined typecasting Grin.

Look I'm not suggesting he's a misunderstood Laurence Olivier or anything, just that given the chance (and he did get that chance on stage when I saw him) he could actually act. Probably not now he's done years in Eastenders though.

MerylSqueak · 05/08/2023 17:54

I no longer watch anything with Clive Owen in as he wrecked ever. It's been a while though so he may gave improved.

Hayden Christiansen was appalling in Star Wars but I haven't seen him in anything else

Kevin Costner probably isn't a very good actor but he has charisma and he generally picks roles that suit him. He's an old fashioned movie star. I love Bull Durham so much. I think Clint Eastwood might be in the same category. He's been in some excellent movies and he's good but he basically plays Clint Eastwood in everything.

How very dare you? Emma and Helen? Wash your mouth out! Grin They are both amazing! You may not "like" them but there's no way you can say they are bad at their craft!

HalloumiLuvver · 05/08/2023 20:38

Oh god yes Hayden from Star Wars. Actually painful to watch. I remember George Lucas was quoted as saying he had "something amazing behind his eyes" or some such bollocks, well he never showed it on screen, he was godawful.

Ellmau · 05/08/2023 21:01

For woodenness:
Most of Dr Who's recent companions (can't remember their names)
The actress who played Brenda in the last series of Father Brown (ditto) - wooden is far too kind
Keanu Reeves
Tom Cruise
Billie Piper
Madonna
The actress with the lead role in The Blacklist
Charlie Sheen

For overacting:
Alison Steadman
Sean Penn

For terrible accents:
Anthony LaPaglia
Mel Gibson

ive never understood the love for Alan Rickman personally - there’s no nuance or skill in anything I’ve ever seen him in I think people on here just fancied him and confused that for acting ability. Totally overrated

I agree with Alan Rickman

Hadjab · 05/08/2023 23:01

JaneJeffer · 04/08/2023 19:57

Criticism isn't ripping people to shreds. Do you want to put critics out of work?

This isn't criticism, it's just bitching

ErrolTheDragon · 05/08/2023 23:30

If anyone doesn't think the criticism of a particular actor are justified, then by all means defend them, as several have done with Hugh Grant for instance.

JaneJeffer · 05/08/2023 23:34

I don't agree with you @Hadjab. Are we just supposed to pretend people are great actors so we don't hurt their feelings? Rubbish

HotMess21 · 05/08/2023 23:53

ScarletWitchM · 04/08/2023 20:02

Jason Momoa - lovely to look at but just plays the same character every time!

Harrison Ford - could be substituted with a cardboard cut out and you wouldn’t notice

What's that about Harrison Ford?! Take that back! 😤

Absolutely not HF. He was so good in Witness, Ender's game, Frantic...

Mothership4two · 14/08/2023 06:09

Having seen Oppenheimer this weekend: Kenneth Branagh

I thought he was hammy as Poirot as well but just thought that was the role.

He should stick to directing - Belfast was excellent

MerylSqueak · 14/08/2023 07:30

I agree. Branagh puts a dampner on everything he's in.
