I don't think I really understand what a fascist is.

I'm not embarrassed but not knowing but this thread reminded me how my mind is boggled trying to figure out why the colours of things fade in the sun - I once read something explaining it and it was something complected to do with electron energy states or something and all the article did was make me realise I don't understand it, before I read it I hadn't given it any thought!

Very goady 'explanation' there. Ageism amd stereotyping at their best.

This has to be the biggest stretch to attempt to be offended I have come across.

I mentioned nothing about 'ageism' or 'sterotyping' of ANYTHING, I simply stated an absolute fact about a designated time frame in all of 10 straight foreward words.

Please explain where the 'ageism' or 'sexism' is in my post?

JusthereforXmas · 05/08/2023 10:51

sorry 'stereotypying' not 'sexism' what a bizarre typo lol been on mumsnet too long.

How Christian’s can believe in dinosaurs.

no dinosaurs went on the ark?
if god created the world in 7 days what world did the dinosaurs live on?
no mention of them in the bible… I haven’t actually read it… but I’m pretty sure they aren’t in it.

Because 'faith' and logic are not one or the other.

I'm christian, I don't believe a bloody word of the Chinese whispered fairy tale book is 100% fact.

I think all the old testament is fun bed time stories, the new testament of garbled fact (Jesus did exist and was seeming quite a famous preacher) with lots whimsy and magic thrown in (like the nativity was made up way AFTER the life of Jesus so virgins and angels 'nah').

The bible has been around thousands of years translated by hand through hundreds of languages and cultures and often doesn't even match up with other versions of its self... you can't take it seriously.

Right now....who's this then?!

I reckon Rik Astley.

Sense of direction! When navigation tells me to ‘head north’ it assumes I know where north it. And when I read a map I have to have it the ‘right way up’. I have to retrace my steps and invariably I go the wrong way.

I lack an internal compass too... people that have one are like wizards.

Don't know which Gen I am.

Born in 1968. Too young to be a boomer but too old for Gen X?

You are Gen X like my mam was... personally I think you where the best generation.

GoatsareGOAT · 05/08/2023 11:06

Someone asked about the <> symbols

x>y reads as x is greater than y
x<y reads as x is less than y

you can either think of it as an arrow pointing at the smaller number
or (this is my kids' preference!) as an open crocodile'smouth that's going to eat the big number

The scientific stuff can easily be googled, including children's explanations. The answer is out there if you really wanted to learn.

I did 4 years of a degree and still dont understand... the kids explanation does not help. Sometimes out brains can't grasp something. I'm not thick (passed everything else) but my brain just can not handle chemistry, complex maths or foreign languages no matter how much I try.

As for the theory thing I literally know its a theory BECAUSE I was taught it on my degree. I have been taught it but that doesn't explain why its treat as fact when its not. People have 'faith' in it working then great but its not a 'fact'.

ImBoilingJackie · 05/08/2023 11:15

@Rufffles I'd say "Niche vintage" probably works as a summary!

@CatMum000 yes, the ant is a different way up when it is at the bottom of the ball than it is when it’s at the top. When it’s at the top the top of its body is facing north, when it’s at the bottom the top of its body is facing south.

@Qwerty21 maybe you missed the title and theme of the thread!!

But the ant is NOT "upside down" in relation to the ball is it, only to the ant on the opposite side of the ball.

When it comes to gravity and planets there is no upside down.

How boats float, and planes stay in the air.

I've read up on it, I've had it explained to me, but still can't get my head around it 😳

It's all about displacement - apparently !!!! 🙃

Maraudingmarauders · 05/08/2023 11:21

How photographs work. We studied them around school, made our own 'cameras', been to photography museums etc but I still can't comprehend pointing something at something else and the image appearing on a different piece of paper.

I also can't get my head around electricity, my DH is an electrical engineer so i just nod and smile a lot. I figure so long as I can use it I don't really need to understand it. I got an A at GCSE physics and chemistry 🤣

BMW6 · 05/08/2023 11:22

And Pinkflamingopants from the point of view of Australians YOU are upside down!

How does it feel?

NumberFortyNorhamGardens · 05/08/2023 11:26

It is also possible for a country to nationally own its own oil and gas and entirely mismanage it. See: Venezuela.

Also to own its own oil and gas and to put the proceeds into a sovereign investment fund and use them for the benefit of all. See: Norway.

Or to own its own railways and to run them into the ground through neglect, incompetence and short sighted penny-pinching. See: British Rail, 1960-1990.

trustingfrogs · 05/08/2023 11:52

I know how big a centimetre and a foot are but I don't know how big a metre is or how long a yard is. Blush

Daftasabroom · 05/08/2023 12:05

There are 100cm in a metre, a metre is about a hand with high the table, kitchen work top etc. A yard is very roughly a metre.

Daftasabroom · 05/08/2023 12:05

Hands width

For me, being butch was a statement about being out and proud, not a sense of inner masculinity. I think this is why numbers have reduced as being a gay has become more mainstream.

In the 90s, I had long hair, wore makeup etc. After I came out, I shaved off my hair and wore army combats, vests and big boots! 😂😂. I was sending out a message really. (30 years on I have long hair and wear dresses again, I am married (to a woman) and have kids and have no need to make the world aware.

So that’s my experience, and theory as to why being butch has reduced.

That's interesting. Do you think being camp (for gay men) is the equivalent and has also reduced? I have no idea how you would even measure this, so maybe it's a completely daft question.

You bring a meeting forward I.e. earlier in the day but when clocks change they spring forward ??? to one hour later???

Spinninsweetness · 05/08/2023 12:40

I just think of 'gross' as hugely massively large I.e. all of your salary and net is smaller after deductions.

@JusthereforXmas i think the ageism comment was aimed at @Stokey who made a comment about boomers !

Yes because clocks is time and the meeting / deadline is the thing. So push back applies to meeting deadline whereas go back 1 hour is time itself.
