I don't think I really understand what a fascist is.

It's not the Oxford comma that's important in that sentence.

"Eating horses and reading" compared to "eating, horses and reading" - it's the comma between "eating" and "horses" that is needed. The Oxford comma that you can put after "horses" is optional and doesn't alter the meaning.

Kinda proving my point here.

RoseslnTheHospital · 06/08/2023 10:43

Yes, I am agreeing with you that the Oxford comma is not the one that changes the meaning in that sentence.

I don’t understand eggs.
Like, how do they know there isn’t a baby chick inside, rather than a yolk?

A baby chicken or just a chicken? If there's no rooster, the eggs can't have been fertilised and therefore won't contain a chick. Basic biology.

Shittenshite · 06/08/2023 10:45

Chick*

Autocorrect fail.

That's not even a demonstration of an Oxford comma. IAs i understand it, it's when a comma is used before the word 'and'.

An example would be using it in the sentence describing board games:

Snakes and ladders and noughts and crosses.

Using an Oxford comma it becomes:

Snakes and ladders, and noughts and crosses.

RoseslnTheHospital · 06/08/2023 10:55

No, an Oxford comma is just a comma used before the "and" or the "or" in a list of three or more items.

Calm down dear. Why are you so upset/angry/offended/anything else (delete as necessary). You're, being quite OTT.

You really are completely incapable of admitting fault... I have to admit your lack of embarrasment at something anyone can easily check you where wrong on is quite impressive.

If only you could take your own advice.

English Grammar... It makes no sense!

You can have a comma after a single word. Sentences so long you HAVE to breathe midway through them.

Obsure rules.. I before e except from after c.. well then it not I before e is it?

Don't even get me started on semicolons...

Singular and plurals A mouse turns into mice, but a house doesn’t turn to hice...

Also evert time I mention this to people I get. Head tilt and some idiot tries to explain it to me..

I have tried for the last 32 years... your 5 minute explanation will NOT suddenly make it all clear....

But yes it embarrasses me.

English in general is a head fuck.

Like how Tear and Tear are pronounced different but Tier and Tear are pronounced the same.

LadyBird1973 · 06/08/2023 11:49

Do Australians buy globes with Australia positioned at the top?
Doesn't Southern Hemisphere mean it should be at the bottom?
(Yes I do know that when in Australia it doesn't feel any different to being in Britain)

I think Tier and Tear (as in teardrop) are pronounced differently…

Boomboom22 · 06/08/2023 11:58

Globes as a map have the north Pole on the top.

BMW6 · 06/08/2023 12:14

It's only tradition and convention to have North at the top for globes and atlases.

I have no doubt that you can buy globes and atlases positioned differently - no reason why not.

The Earth has no "right way up"

I think in general people in Australia use the same orientation maps as we do in the UK. There's no technical reason why maps should have North Pole at the top and the South Pole at the bottom. You could orient them any way you like, but recent history means that the north was dominant and prioritised. The UK was heavily involved in determining modern mapping using Greenwich as the starting point for longitude, hence maps showing the UK in the middle.

Lots of historical maps were orientated differently for various historical reasons. So religious reasons for maps that had the East at the top.

Helendegenerate · 06/08/2023 12:20

There are some hilarious stand up comedy observations on how the English language is full of ridiculous examples of words pronounced in nonsensical ways.

My embarrassment is that I still haven't managed to get any links to these work.

I'm fairly adept at most other aspects of the computer. Honest! 😗

BMW6 · 06/08/2023 12:20

Imagine you are an alien spacecraft entering our universe and into our solar system.

There is no reason why you would approach Earth seeing it the way it is conventionally portrayed is there. You could see it from any plane ( maybe with the poles on the left and right) and it wouldn't be the "wrong way round" would it!

Effect is a noun and affect is a verb .

Except that you can “effect change” ie make change happen, where it is a verb ….

I'm embarrassed that I don't know how to use a cafetiere. I'm 56 and never drunk coffee in my life and only ever have instant (oh the horror!) in my house of anyone comes round. I won a cafetiere in a raffle and want to buy some coffee for it but have no idea what I'm supposed to buy, which is a bit embarrassing!

Flying ants-the fact these non flying insects randomly grow wings overnight. Where do they all go?

I agree with this. And why do they all appear on the same day?

The amount of FB posts there are bemoaning "flying any day" on the same day, no matter where they are in the country.

Best thing about the shit weather of this summer - I've not noticed flying ant day this year!

Easily found out information about flying ants:

https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/when-why-winged-ants-swarm-nuptial-flight.html

TLDR - Existing ants don't grow wings, new "princess" ants eggs are laid and hatch after a period of hot humid weather. They emerge alongside males that hatch with wings and disperse in order to mate and form new ant colonies across a wide area (hence the need for wings). There isn't just one day on which it happens, but if most of the country has a period of hot humid weather in July/August then it may happen on the same day for many local regions.

I would imagine that lots are eaten by insectivore birds rather than form new colonies.

How to work our tv. It's about 12 years old and has had lots of boxes and controllers added to bring it up to date. If I turn it on, and it's not on a screen I don't know what to do with, then I turn it off and do something different instead.

I know how to use our TV, but my nephews think it's absolutely hilarious that I have no idea how to turn on a PlayStation, or use the controllers!

I also have no desire to know how to turn on a PlayStation, or use a controller either!

stayathomer · 07/08/2023 12:10

Yes to the tv thing! I sound like my mother giving out about how many remotes there are that all do different things and you have to go into different sections to get into either Disney, Netflix or Amazon Prime (which are mostly not tuned in). I miss the good old days of just flicking through!!
