I don't think I really understand what a fascist is.

@JusthereforXmas it's the scientific method. If all available evidence backs up and supports a theory, and it proves reliable in predicting outcomes from experiments and observations then it's the current best theory.

The DNA double helix isn't just a whimsy, it was an idea based on what was known at the time. It has yet to be disproved, and all available evidence to date supports it as a concept. Eg this study from 2014

Definition of verbs, nouns and adjectives refuses to stay in my head

PhoebePhalange · 04/08/2023 19:12

the difference between effect and affect 🤷‍♀️ impact is my go to!

slipperhopper · 04/08/2023 19:15

Plunder/squander dilemma …

To plunder = to steal (generally from a community or society). ‘Mugabe plundered his nation’s wealth’.

To squander = to waste extravagantly ‘He squandered his lottery winnings on fast cars and yachts and finished up a pauper’

Pelsall116 · 04/08/2023 19:16

e-bay! all this bidding stuff and some of the terminology they use

Birdfeather · 03/08/2023 13:21

Affect and effect.

To the point where I just won’t use them!

I google it, think I understand it, then realise I don’t.

Affect is a noun, effect is a verb

How on earth do vinyl records have the actual singers voice in those tiny grooves?
How did someone think it was a good idea and then made it happen?
Boggles my mind!

Haha brilliant one! So true

How boats float, and planes stay in the air.

I've read up on it, I've had it explained to me, but still can't get my head around it 😳

🤣🤣 yes!

And Gen Alpha is what we are in now 2015-2030.

Very goady 'explanation' there. Ageism amd stereotyping at their best.

stopbeingacunt · 04/08/2023 20:02

Excuse the typo, should be and, not amd.

Lemonandginger1 · 04/08/2023 20:06

What Line Managers do! They are good at saying the right stuff, but then not doing much...

OnSecondThoughts · 04/08/2023 20:07

The grooves of vinyl records actually only store a very 'reduced' version of the music, because if the groove was recorded onto the disc just as you hear it, it would vibrate too much and just wouldn't work. So a circuit removes pretty much all the bass tones before the groove is created, and then when the record is played, another circuit takes what comes out of the grooves and turns the bass right up again before it goes to the speakers.

Fax machines.

I know it’s outdated. But even more than the internet, emails, phones, I just don’t understand how that picture was zapped through and like, so long ago.

I don't understand how a crush I had on a celebrity 34 years ago (for about 4 years), suddenly resurrected itself when I saw them last year. Not complaining, I'm enjoying it. Presuming it's my hormones. Nobody else seems to fancy him :)

Right now....who's this then?!

LpPp · 04/08/2023 20:12

How Christian’s can believe in dinosaurs.

no dinosaurs went on the ark?
if god created the world in 7 days what world did the dinosaurs live on?
no mention of them in the bible… I haven’t actually read it… but I’m pretty sure they aren’t in it.

BeBopTallulah · 04/08/2023 20:21

The symbols for greater than and less than <> I never know which is which.

Annemaria · 04/08/2023 20:25

The off side rule in football; snooker; cricket. However many times they’re explained to me I just can’t get it. I’m not thick: I can do cryptic crosswords…

Also, when a plane takes off in the UK and lands in Australia, how come it doesn’t land upside down??

🤣🤣🤣

BoomBoom70 · 04/08/2023 20:40

So a verb is a ‘doing’ word and a noun is a name of something (concrete verb for example ‘table’ versus abstract verb such as ‘power’). I love grammar! An adverb helps describe the verb and ends in ‘ly’ do you drive carefully, speak properly, etc. 😊

MoonCharged · 04/08/2023 20:42

I have an English degree but don't know how to spell definitely. Definately? Who knows.

Also photographs. Magical things! How the heck do they work?!? It's magic... I swear.

BoomBoom70 · 04/08/2023 20:53

Sense of direction! When navigation tells me to ‘head north’ it assumes I know where north it. And when I read a map I have to have it the ‘right way up’. I have to retrace my steps and invariably I go the wrong way.

The symbols for greater than and less than <> I never know which is which.

The biggest end of the v means "more" the pointy end of the v means "less"

So 50p < £1 (50p is less than £1)
and £1 > 50p (£1 is greater than 50p)

timesaretight · 04/08/2023 20:55

Effect and affect, help.
