I don't think I really understand what a fascist is.

The definitions of insidious and invidious - I've read them so many times, but it just won't stick in my head. See also egregious.

Egregious 🤣...I go into panic mode when I hear this after The League of Gentlemen....good or bad.....which one? 🤣🤣🤣

The difference between net & gross in terms of salary. Just can't get it to stick in my brain

Net is what's left in the net after things (tax etc) have drained out :)

Gross means big or fat, so that's with everything still in.

FluffyUnicorn84 · 04/08/2023 21:21

Why inflammable supposedly means the same as flammable not the opposite- DH goes on about some Latin thing?!

nopuppiesallowed · 04/08/2023 21:22

@LpPp
See, I'm a Christian and there's lots of things about God I don't understand, but one of the biggest mystery for me is how people can look at our amazing world and think it 'just happened'......

RhosynBach · 04/08/2023 21:23

I have an a level in maths but have never been taught, used or understood long division.

the word nonplussed sounds like not fussed and it confuses me that it means the opposite

not sure why I can see the moon in the afternoons sometimes as well as the sun. My kid asked me about it once and I said the moon was being silly because I had no idea why

nopuppiesallowed · 04/08/2023 21:26

And I know that there is such a thing as a just war, but it amazes me why leaders of countries don't put their wealth into solving world poverty, improving the lives of their people, cancer treatments etc instead of buying weapons. Just why?

The difference between net & gross in terms of salary. Just can't get it to stick in my brain

Think of gross as being large (the amount before tax etc) and net being what is left in the net after the deductions have fallen through the net (amount after deductions). That's what I have always done

Glitterandunicorns · 04/08/2023 21:42

for affect v effect: affect is the verb (to affect) and effect is the noun (the effect), so for example
The effect of the Barbie movie is pink clothes everywhere.
The Barbie movie has affected the colour of clothes in shops.
(I’m going to see the Barbie movie next week and I’m very excited!)

Ohhoho · 04/08/2023 21:55

I’m so glad I found this out not long ago : I wear a lot of wool and love my silk pillowcases…so I generally now use non bio
Biological detergents contain certain enzymes that are there to remove proteins from a garment. This is how they are effective at cleaning things such as egg from clothing. However, silk and wool are also made up of proteins. Biological detergent cannot differentiate between a bit of egg stain and a bit of silk so the enzymes will eat away at it…and will cause holes and weakening

Don't know which Gen I am.

Born in 1968. Too young to be a boomer but too old for Gen X?

DadDadDad · 04/08/2023 21:59

@RhosynBach - the Earth rotates on its axis once every 24 hours creating night and day, but that has nothing to do with what the Moon is doing, as it takes about 28 days to travel in its orbit round the Earth. So the two cycles aren't locked together, and the Moon could be in the sky above you in the morning, the afternoon, or during the night.

The phases of the Moon - ie how much of the part of the Moon facing us is also facing the Sun - naturally do depend on where it is in its orbit relative to where the Sun is, so that is why bright full moons occur at night (the Moon is above your head, the Sun is below your feet on the other side of the Earth so it shines fully on the part of the Moon you are looking at), but it's quite possible to see the Moon during the day.

The difference between jealousy and envy 🤷

For me , jealousy is "You have that, I don't want you to have that, as I want it"
Envy is "you have that, I would love to have it but I'm still happy for you".

When to use 'effect' and when to use 'affect'.

Effect is a noun, a name
Affect is a verb, a doing word

So you can affect something, or you can have an affect on something

Boomboom22 · 04/08/2023 22:25

Jesus died on good Friday, good because his death means salvation and forgiveness of all mankind's past and future sins. Theologically.

Or at least keep an open mind to all possibilities. Put simply no one knows, even the theories evolve and continue to evolve, science is not static. Much of what I was taught at school has since been shown to be wrong (Newtonian gravity missed relativity, the atom had electrons/protons/neutrons... they don't they are much more complex, and so on...)

Blueink · 04/08/2023 22:40

A couple of PP asked about Rock, Paper, Scissors:

Rock blunts scissors = rock wins against scissors
Paper covers rock = paper wins against rock
Scissors cut paper = scissors win against paper

HarrietPoole · 04/08/2023 23:06

What “meta” means.

Mallowfairy · 04/08/2023 23:23

I don't understand why gas and electricity are still going up in price when we are hearing about the huge profits these companies make. Sorry if this has been said, I don't have the energy yo look through 25 pages.

Nutterjacks · 04/08/2023 23:25

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 03/08/2023 13:10

When to use 'effect' and when to use 'affect'.

Affect is usually a verb, and it means to impact or change. Effect, on the other hand, is usually a noun that you would use to indicate the result of a change.

I don't understand why it's colder at the top of mountains if heat rises?

blueshoes · 04/08/2023 23:33

The scientific stuff can easily be googled, including children's explanations. The answer is out there if you really wanted to learn.

Cashback
Matched Betting.

I feel I would be richer if I understood either of them!

For cashback open an account with say Quidco
Every time you want to shop, let's say at Boots, go to the Quidco app and search boots. Click on it, it takes you to the boots website and you shop as usual. Gives you cashback in the Quidco account which you can then withdraw
You obviously only get cashback if the website is on Quidco and it usually tells you what percentage and works it out for you
Good to do when you're buying big things like car insurance or holidays etc

Matched betting - I started with this, and religiously followed every step. Eventually I was doing it while riding my horse Blush or at the supermarket

Bonfire23 · 04/08/2023 23:40

With cars - I'm trying to set up a drop in at the minute related to my job (I can answer some car questions!)

So you turn up between say 6pm - 8pm and you can ask anything even that you think is stupid like how do I put air in my tyres, when does it need a service, what does this button do, why can't I use this feature... etc
And we show you how it works or what to do

MdNdD · 04/08/2023 23:55

The serve needs to go over the net and land in the ‘service box’. If it hits the top of the net and still lands in the service box, it is a ‘let’. A ‘let’ means the server can take that serve again.

The server gets two attempts to serve for each point, if the first lands outside of the service box, it is a fault and they get a ‘second serve’.
If the first serve is a let, you might hear ‘take two’ or ‘first serve’ meaning the server has two serves left. If their second serve hits the net but still lands in the service box, then you might hear ‘second serve’ meaning they can take their second serve again.
So, with a let, unlike a ‘fault’, the server can have another serve. But with a fault, they lose one serve from their two serves. Two faults is called a double fault and they lose the point.
hope that makes sense!
