I don't think I really understand what a fascist is.

Thank you @RoseslnTheHospital that makes sense. Not impressed teacher didn't make this clear. If he said "it can make anything out of plastic," I'd have thought, ah, cool, but he genuinely was claiming it could make anything full stop.

Anyhoodaloo · 03/08/2023 20:35

Risk.

Some teachers aren't..... all that well informed. Saying things like that can really confuse kids.

The 18th century

Was this the 1700's or the 1800's??

Also, how bridges are built

The way I remember this is that I was born in the 1970s and high was in the 20th century. So the 20th century years begin with 19.

Pinkflamingopants · 03/08/2023 14:26

@VinEtFromage i have done that many times to try and work it out - the plane lands the opposite way to how it took off. Yes, the wheels are on the ground, but the plane itself and everything inside it is now the opposite way up to how it took off. I cannot understand it!

@Pinkflamingopants you'll have to try
it before taking illicit substances! 😂😂

CurlyhairedAssassin · 03/08/2023 20:58

I completely concur with the record one - how on earth can grooves on vinyl produce the varied and nuanced sounds that it does?! Mind-boggling.

Same with data (so the internet, TV, Radio etc.) - I know that it's all about light/sound/electricity/radio pulses or waves, but I just cannot get my head around how such intricate pictures/sounds etc. can be converted into something so intangible and then back into their original form.

Yeah, that's a really good one. It's like magic to me, that. How did they first discover that it was even possible?

beeonmybonnett · 03/08/2023 20:59

People who are colour blind. Is everything genuinely grey/white to them?

Lovecleansheets · 03/08/2023 21:00

To all those confused about affect and effect, this might help:

effect is usually a noun

thE Effect

That sometimes helps my pupils.

Edenvale · 03/08/2023 21:09

The Palestine/Israel thing - I have no clue at all who are the goodies/baddies

RoseslnTheHospital · 03/08/2023 21:13

beeonmybonnett · 03/08/2023 20:59

People who are colour blind. Is everything genuinely grey/white to them?

Not necessarily. Full colour blindness is very rare, where the person cannot see any colour at all. They would see in shades of grey. The most common colour blindness is red/green colourblindness, where those two colours appear to be the same shade. So red writing on a green background would look like a solid block of colour.

DueyCheatemAndHow · 03/08/2023 21:17

Pensions and tax. Literally no clue.

I’m irked by your reference to love island and your misunderstanding of its audience. I watch it but understand net and gross perfectly. You make a lot of good points in your post but it’s easy to overlook if you open with such an annoying comment.

Who ARE the audience for Love Island? I have no idea. I don't have anyone in my close circle or family who watches it because it just doesn't interest them, we all are of a similar opinion that it seems the contestants are quite attention-seeking, influcer types very much interested in surface appearances, and I have no interest or respect for such people, and can't understand their huge following. However I don't think I'm the target audience. I'm 50 and while I'm sure I may have found it vaguely interesting in my 20s when I was a similar age group to the contestents I doubt that I would have known as much as I do now about pensions and investments and tax etc, simply because that comes with life experience.

Perhaps I should have come at it from the age angle instead.

HRTQueen · 03/08/2023 21:26

instructions

I find them so confusing I often just look at the pictures guess and hope for the best. I’m very good at putting furniture together but usually only thing I follow from the instructions is counting the items

the plot of Star Wars

lots of things like how TV, Radio, How planes
fly, why boats don’t sink

anything with numbers written down but am very good at mental arithmetic. I can’t do long division as it’s taught but I can work it out in my own way (and more often than not quicker) the same with times tables. I usually work out the sum on countdown in time

HRTQueen · 03/08/2023 21:30

How did they build London Bridge. In the 1600’s it was full of buildings how did it stay up

yes I don’t get that the 20th century is the 1900’s

ssd · 03/08/2023 21:31

I don't know how to wire a plug. Or put oil in the car. Or check the tyre pressure. Or pump them up.

If dh runs away with another woman I'm fucked.

KnickerlessParsons · 03/08/2023 21:31

How to use Teams properly, and all its apps

I really hope I don't get grief & accusations of being homophobic from this as I genuinely am NOT! But one thing I truly don't understand, is why in many lesbian relationships, there is one who is very masculine and then with gay male couples, there's usually one who is very feminine in nature) Obviously I'm NOT saying I believe there's anything at all 'wrong' with it, I just wondered if there was something I wasn't understanding? Perhaps it's just coincidence as I'm not massively social so I don't get out very much! I've just never met or known it to be any other way. Whereas with heterosexual couples, femininity & masculinity seems to vary massively from couple to couple.

I don’t think this is as likely as it used to be- my wife and I are a butch/femme couple but 99% of other couples I have known have been various mixes of femme/andro/ butch etc.

There has been a real decline in butch culture in the last 10 years.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 03/08/2023 13:34

@Cantstaystuckforever So I'm ignorant because I don't know many homosexual couples? I'm a severely disabled, widowed parent to a child that hates the leaving the house! I'm not ignorant I'm just isolated!!! I'm trying to understand it better. That's all.

I've read the rest of your post 3 times and I still don't fully understand exactly what you're saying. I'm not stereotyping anyone, this isn't about wokeness or stereotyping. I simply asked if there was a reason for it.
OF COURSE there are heterosexual women who are happily married to men who are what you may describe as masculine in nature - I literally said that in my post! I said that masculinity & femininity seems to vary hugely amongst heterosexual couples!

I understand what your saying and didn't understand the answer either.

I think when you see a very butch lesbian women it means they are sending out a message that they aren't interested in men.

Sallysmate · 03/08/2023 21:43

Effect and affect - I’ll try to keep it topical.

Effect - as a noun means a result or an outcome,
e.g. The effect (result) of empty shelves in Wilko is that customers are leaving without purchases.
e.g. The effect of the weather is that I’m wearing extra layers tonight.

Effect as a verb means to bring about, to accomplish,
e.g. The sale of our house was effected (brought about) only after we reduced it in price.
(This is the one which catches people out.)

Affect - as a verb means to produce an effect on,
e.g. The mistake found in the student’s marks did not affect the final grade.
e.g. Advice on Mumsnet affected her decision to end her marriage.

Ladybird69 · 03/08/2023 21:44

@FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee me too! I’ve had it explained to me numerous times but I just can’t get my head around it.
also us! Humans animals flowers etc how do a bunch of cells talk and walk? How do flowers get their colours? How do animals know what to do to survive?
it fries my brain when I think about it.

Well, it won't be too long before we can make replacement organs on a fancy version of a 3D printer, I think.

Blackcloids · 03/08/2023 21:45

bookworm14 · 03/08/2023 13:30

The offside rule. It’s been explained to me numerous times but my brain just won’t retain the information.

Every time. I don't want to understand it I don't think. Subconsciously

girlfriend44 · 03/08/2023 21:45

How does a dj get the next song ready without a break in the music.

How do women get a bra fitting in prison How do they know they have the right size and do they share bras?

Plankingplanks · 03/08/2023 21:48

ChocHotolate · 03/08/2023 13:05

The difference between net & gross in terms of salary. Just can't get it to stick in my brain

I remember this by thinking that net is lower as it has taken out the gross bits
