I don't think I really understand what a fascist is.

I don't know how to wire a plug. Or put oil in the car. Or check the tyre pressure. Or pump them up.

If dh runs away with another woman I'm fucked.

Most things come with moulded plugs now so it's rare to have to rewire them. The car things are really easy though! If someone can't show you, there must surely be YouTube videos.
One of my workmates said she didn't know how to change a wheel, so a couple of us gave her a training session in the car park!

BalloonSlayer · 03/08/2023 21:51

@FictionalCharacter they confused an adult teaching assistant as well! I was listening really carefully as I didn't believe it could "make anything" so was waiting for a disclaimer and it never came...

RoseslnTheHospital · 03/08/2023 21:51

The offside rule is simple, and if you can understand the rules of other sports and games then this is no different. It's used as a way of excluding women from talking about football and belittling them if they don't immediately get it right. It's another small example of sexist behaviour.

Of course if you're not interested in football then the offside rule would be of no interest too and therefore harder to understand and remember. Like the precise details of penalty shoot outs, or rules about substitutions, or extra time.

Biological washing powder has little enzymes in it - like hundreds of tiny pac-men chomping on the dirt in your clothes. If you wash them too hot they denature i.e. they become misshapen so their poor little mouths can't eat the dirt any more.

They're not actually alive, nor can they play video games.

Non-bio just cleans using chemicals. Much less fun.

I don't watch films, so a lot of cultural references bypass me. People think I'm weird if I say I don't know what they're talking about, so now I just smile and nod and try to change the subject.

I knew the difference but I love your explanation! 😂

I struggle with the words fascist/fascism/Marxist too so will be reading that link above.

Pensions. Deferred benefits and other terminologies. What/how do you decide how to collect a private pension. Buying of an annuity...who to trust Sad

Remember that female ref who was widely jeered at for getting the offside rule wrong? The irony was, she was right and the sneering men were wrong.

@NoraLuka if you hold your hands up in front of you. Your left hand finger and thumb makes the shape of the letter L.
if you’re right handed this works, you write with your right hand and the one that’s left is left! 🤣

Blow on your hand. Can you feel the pressure of the air?

Hold a small piece of paper above, but close to you mouth. Blow towards the paper, it move up. This is how wings work.

Wouldn't that mean that if there were no wind, the plane would fall out of the sky? Or is there permanent wind/air movement higher up?!

Ask him if he thinks it can make a hippopotamus, a lasagne with salad and garlic bread or a lawn 😁
He'd probably bluster and say he meant models of those things!

I don’t understand anything very much.

Yep me too

Another plane one...

Why do planes not just go up, wait for the earth the rotate and then come back down? The earth rotates far faster than any plan can fly!! It does a complete rotation in 24-hours, yet it takes more time than this to fly just half way around from the UK to Australia!?!?

By my calculations, it would take about 12 hours to fly from the UK to Australia using this method, as only a half rotation would be required for the opposite side of the planet to come around to the take-off point.

I'm guessing gravity has something to do with it... or maybe I'm onto something and should claim the patent ASAP 😂

I don't understand either, or the stock market in general. Isn't it just people making decisions? So when things go wrong and things crash, why don't they just reverse the decisions they made? Money is just made up numbers. It makes no sense to me.

The plane would have to be ridiculously high up....out in space in your example. It also likely wouldn't hold enough fuel, which is why planes always stop somewhere to refuel on the way from UK to Australia to refuel. The stopovers are what adds the time, if you could fly directly without stopping it would obviously be quicker.

Politics.

Liberal. Labour. Left wing. Right wing.
Democrats. Republicans.

NFI! (tbh, I've never tried to understand either).

RoseslnTheHospital · 03/08/2023 22:25

@Enoughnowbrandon planes need to be moving fast on the ground to take off. The forward movement of the plane is what creates the "wind" in that scenario. Rather than the air being blown onto the wing, the wing is being pushed through the air. But it has the same outcome.

And, strong winds can pick up planes, like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/comments/pvktqi/windcarriessawayaaparked_airplane/

Daftasabroom · 03/08/2023 22:28

Enoughnowbrandon · 03/08/2023 22:00

The aeroplanes engines make it move through the air. The same as your car's engine makes it move through the air.

Don't actually try this, but what would happen if you put your head out of the car window on a motorway on an otherwise windless day?

A simplification of the examples I gave which might help:

Effect - a result or resulted in (was effected)

Affect - have/had an influence upon
