What's one feature you would like MN to have?

I know MN is a clunky and simple forum and many love it for that reason, but I was wondering if you could add any feature what would it be?

Recently i've been using a forum with undo / redo buttons and it's such a useful addition that every time I delete a part of a post on MN I find myself wishing they had a similar feature.

I'll get in there before everyone else but for the love of god I want the much promised time edit feature!

Those who signed up for premium years ago were lulled in by the mention of new features including editing, I suspected at the time it was a lie and low and behold somehow it's still not here...

Phineyj · 03/08/2023 10:27

Edit, spellcheck

Everyone always says a timed edit feature. We're never going to get one. I can't understand why, when so many of us have been begging for one for so very long.

Oh gosh yes, I wouldn't mind if MN never intended to introduce a feature, but the lack of explanation for the timed edit feature which Justine herself suggested is a bit of an odd one.

I would like to mute certain posters

DappledThings · 03/08/2023 10:56

The Reply option to actually do something. People use it thinking it replies to that post but it doesn't, it just creates a new post so there are threads full of comments which appear to be responding to another poster but without quoting them so it makes no sense.

Swoonworthy · 03/08/2023 11:04

A like button.

I’m not against an edit feature and see lots of people requesting this, but why are people so keen for it when can read your post to spot errors before you send it? Do people only read through their post once they’ve posted? I may be missing something as I know lots of other sites have it.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/08/2023 11:06

I'd like them to bring back the 'bulk select' option to unwatch threads. That disappeared and now you have to do them one at a time, which takes forever.

EvenlyDetermined · 03/08/2023 11:11

I’d like a timed edit too, I do read back through my posts but sometimes only notice an error as I hit Post, especially on my phone.

I’d also like an option to turn off the autoformatting that has started creeping in.

But most of all I want them to bring back the option of toggling between Show All Posts and your default of 50, 25 whatever posts per page, I used to use that a lot for searching back through threads (my default is 50 otherwise they take too long to load when using 4G or weak wifi).

exactly this.
so yeah a button that would say exactly this for us haha, or just like fb like, angry, care cry type of thing.

Londongent · 03/08/2023 11:13

A like button would be great.
Also a button to see one user's posts in a thread, in the same way you can just view all of the OP's posts.

Well said, and a like feature would also help prevent the repeated quoting of a well made post or comment which seems to happen a lot.

Have you never spotted a typing error after posting? I can read and reread my reply and still miss something that suddenly becomes glaringly obvious only after pressing the post button. It's also helpful to have a timed edit as sometime a post doesn't format theway you intended, for example missing a * when quoting, which then doesn't bold that part of a post.

I'd like them to bring back the 'bulk select' option to unwatch threads. That disappeared and now you have to do them one at a time, which takes forever.

Yes they seem to add random features that no one asks for, similar threads and my feed being two good examples, but remove helpful features like this.

The search function is pretty terrible, that could be much better at finding what you're looking for!

greyhairnomore · 03/08/2023 11:34

Edit and like button.

I actually think the search function is pretty good, at least compared to the mess it used to be. Other forums definitely do it better, but at least I can now find things via the MN search, whereas in the past it used to require googling with mumsnet at the end. Grin

Yes, of course I’ve made errors, quite often actually, that’s because I don’t always check my posts very well before posting or use the preview button. If people are bothered, I’d think they would check it more before.

I think the preview function shows how the post will look in terms of formatting but maybe that’s not available on the app? In which case I would understand people wanting an edit button more.

Anyway, it’s just a forum and I don’t usually put this much thought into it. If theres errors in my posts, it’s not like it’s an official legal document.
I’ve probably made errors in this post. 😬

Defiantlynot41 · 03/08/2023 13:13

Like function ✅
Edit button (maybe with a notification that the post has been edited to stop people manipulating the post?) ✅
Improve search - at least offer sorting by most recent/most relevant, but actually adding some functionality such as - to omit certain words or + to show word combinations ✅

N4ish · 03/08/2023 13:23

Defintely a like button.

Kingpin90 · 03/08/2023 13:25

A like button

Guineapigwoes · 03/08/2023 13:26

Like/love/sad/angry button

frazzlerazzle · 03/08/2023 13:26

I'd hate a like button 👎👎👎
I liked the ability to search for specific posters on a thread that was made premium only.

ilovemydogmore · 03/08/2023 13:28

A sub-comment/reply structure like reddit, so instead of typing the exact same thing with extra nuance someone can just add their additional thoughts underneath an existing comment.

Upvote/downvote - would remove all the additional comments just berating someone for saying something stupid, and give us all a better steer on where people fall in the debate.

Alighttouchonthetiller · 03/08/2023 13:29

I'd like a function whereby, after 9 pm, when you press 'Post' a little box pops up saying 'Are you sure?' And then when you click 'Yes' another box pops up saying, 'But are you really sure? You know what you're like after you've had a glass of wine.'

DinoRoar14 · 03/08/2023 13:30

I can't even filter OPs comments so I'd like that to be open to everyone
