What's one feature you would like MN to have?

I know MN is a clunky and simple forum and many love it for that reason, but I was wondering if you could add any feature what would it be?

Recently i've been using a forum with undo / redo buttons and it's such a useful addition that every time I delete a part of a post on MN I find myself wishing they had a similar feature.

Reaction options. Would be such a good way of seeing which way opinion is swinging. The poll often doesn't match the comments.

The bookmark overrides the comment. I don't know why. I bookmark threads I'm reading but don't want to comment on.

I guess it would come in handy on threads you don't comment on but it's a pain that the bookmark feature over rides the last viewed post as they obviously want us to use the bookmark feature given its prominence under each post. Also it's a hard habit to break once you've started bookmarking.

Whinge · 03/08/2023 19:52

Possibly I am The Only Mumsnetter Who Likes 'My Feed'.

I'm glad someone like it, but it seems odd to add features like my feed when it's not something that the community ever felt was missing or is needed to improve the site. It's the same with similar threads, it caused so many problems when it was first introduced, and now it's at the bottom of the page so no one ever uses it.

Edit within a minute or so A like button

These seem to be the most requested features so it's unlikely they'll be coming anytime soon. 🤣

Not so much nowadays as I hardly recognise anyone's username but in the past I would've liked a mute button where a message came up saying "X is blathering on again" instead of showing what they actually said.

I'm on a forum that does this and honestly, nobody uses the function because it's annoying. It doesn't just not show you blocked content, it shows a large box saying something like, "You can't see this content because you've chosen to ignore this user". It actually just makes you want to see the content rather than erasing the user from your experience. And then you see them when other posters quote them anyway.

It doesn't impact negatively on anyone's experience but yours. As one poster said when we were discussing it: "I don't need a button to do my ignoring for me."

Yarnorama · 03/08/2023 20:31

"Change name should be allowed, but have a cool down, would lessen sock puppeting. Could be small for first name change and increase over time. It's an unusual feature in the first place tbh."

You can no longer name-change mid-thread.

Dobbyismostaggrievedsir · 03/08/2023 20:41

I would like the old way of finding the page you want to return. When a thread is over thirty pages long it would be helpful to be able to type the page number I want to jump to instead of having to move through a page at a time.

justlass · 03/08/2023 20:49

I'd love an edit button, also a delete button. I can't see why this is such a big deal. We all make mistakes, typos, why shouldn't we be able to correct them or delete them?

You can. You just have to make an effort to do it.
That was a good change actually, to default to the username you used in the first post you made on the thread.

QuintessentiallyScottish · 03/08/2023 21:07

When I'm typing out a reply and new posts come in before I post it, clicking on them means I lose whatever I've typed out so I've learned to C&P what I've said and can edit my reply if necessary. It'd be handy not to have to.

EarringsandLipstick · 03/08/2023 21:13

No to 'like' or 'reaction' feature.

Yes, it seems like a useful feature but
a) you'll get the whole cliquey thing happening with certain posts being liked / otherwise excessively
b) it shuts down discussion

Yes many people only reply to say 'great post' but even that small effort prompts engagement & possibly leads to a longer reply sometimes.

EarringsandLipstick · 03/08/2023 21:15

Don't understand the bookmark confusion.

Just bookmark the last post you read, or your own if that's the last?

You'll return to that point then when you revisit the thread.

LindorDoubleChoc · 03/08/2023 21:18

I'd like a like button so we can do away with the endless quoting of the full OP (often paragraphs long) and then someone who feels the world needs to hear their voice just saying "this".

Agreed. I also don't want a "sub-comment/reply structure like reddit". If I wanted reddit I'd use reddit.
The fact it isn't like reddit is one of the things I love about MN.

Regarding the bookmarked/ your own comment thing, it would be useful if the bookmark was automatically removed when you commented.

SweetBirdsong · 03/08/2023 21:26

DEFINITELY an edit function. If only for say one minute. 45 seconds even. Just as a trial run!

gamerchick · 03/08/2023 21:33

I'd happily never have an edit button if it means never having a like button. It's a discussion forum, use your words. Or go to Facebook.

Reddit layout is bloody awful. Go there if you want it to look like that.

I'd also like to be able to report obvious spam posts so you dont have to scroll forever to get to the bottom though.

fancreek · 03/08/2023 21:35

When someone asks a question that gets asked at least weekly, MN AI can tell and the post button gets greyed out to prevent the thread

See:

  • what do you do if you wfh
  • what helps plantar fasciitis
  • why are men or non parents on here
  • how often do you change your sheets
  • where should I stay in New York

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/08/2023 18:49

A function that takes me to the point where I commented on someone else's post, so that I don't have to scroll through loads of pages to read comments made after mine.

It does

It's called bookmark

RenoDakota · 03/08/2023 21:58

Automatic detection and deletion of the phrase "use your words".

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/08/2023 22:02

Some kind of AI-powered (whatever they use for the 'similar threads' feature) thing that picks up certain words or phrases and asks if you are definite that you want to start ANOTHER thread asking the same question when they are already legion - maybe giving stats/dates when the same thread was last started and links to them as an alternative to starting the merry-go-round all over again.

Also a quick question as to whether or not you have RTFT before your post goes up. Then, whenever people answer No (maybe with a test about a random earlier post if they say Yes!) these posts could be shown in a pale colour and then permanently shoved to the very end of the thread; with priority of place always given to those engaging respectfully with the thread, rather than just wading straight in with their 'gem' that they expect everybody else to read, even though they haven't paid everybody else the same basic courtesy.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/08/2023 22:03

X-posted with fancreek!

NaughtyBoyGeorgeMichaelJacksonBrown · 03/08/2023 22:26

I've often wanted a 'like' button to really support a post, but overall, I think it would just turn it into a popularity contest. People would say what they knew would be popular to get likes - i know we think MN users would be above this, but I don't think so. It would also add credence to opinions which might not be helpful to the OP or readers. I think every reply being given equal weight is the right thing -no need to Reddit-ify!

You can report spam posts. Although it might be better if those ones disappeared completely without the deletion message since the users are rarely seen again.

The sub comment thing in reddit is dreadful. Makes the threads so hard to read.

Polling on topics other than AIBU.

Good idea!
