What's one feature you would like MN to have?

Whinge · 03/08/2023 09:06

I know MN is a clunky and simple forum and many love it for that reason, but I was wondering if you could add any feature what would it be?

Recently i've been using a forum with undo / redo buttons and it's such a useful addition that every time I delete a part of a post on MN I find myself wishing they had a similar feature.

Maybe make more use of the Preview feature?

Preview post - if all looks good, hit send! If not, then edit.

Admittedly, I should take my own advice at times.

Tetchypants · 03/08/2023 13:33

I think they’re considering a like button, but so the likes are only visible to the posted. I filled in a survey about it a week or two ago - or did I dream that?

I'm sure I saw something similar but honestly I wouldn't put any stick into what they say. As I mentioned above when premium frost came about one of the things they mentioned was an edit feature, it was a good hook as they know so many people wanted it but it's still not made an appearance years later.

YourNameGoesHere · 03/08/2023 13:37

Ignore the errors, though they prove the above point about reading it and still not seeing them. I read through it twice and saw none of them probably because I read it as I thought I'd written it. I swear the minute you see it posted they all stand out like they are capitalised, bolded and flashing like a neon sign. 🤣

OhComeOnFFS · 03/08/2023 13:40

Not so much nowadays as I hardly recognise anyone's username but in the past I would've liked a mute button where a message came up saying "X is blathering on again" instead of showing what they actually said.

Yarnorama · 03/08/2023 13:46

It's a talk forum, no need for a like button, use your words!

I would probably use a hide poster option.

But, overall, I'd prefer fewer options tbh, not more, can do without quoting and gifs and non-MN emojis.

BlossomCloud · 03/08/2023 13:54

Being able to report an obvious spam post from the title alone, without having to click into it.

Like those ones about Asian call girls or whatever, obvious they just need reporting but you have to click into the post and scroll down to report.. why?!

SuperBurgers · 03/08/2023 13:55

The ability to block people.

SuperBurgers · 03/08/2023 13:56

Londongent · 03/08/2023 11:13

A like button would be great.
Also a button to see one user's posts in a thread, in the same way you can just view all of the OP's posts.

This would be handy. Also, making the username a link to their other posts, so you can see threads they've started or comments they've made elsewhere. I think this would make people more accountable.

Whinge · 03/08/2023 13:56

A like button seems like a popular choice, so I can't see MN implementing it any time soon. They don't seem to add things posters want. Again suggested threads and my feed being perfect example of this. Grin

A sub-comment/reply structure like reddit, so instead of typing the exact same thing with extra nuance someone can just add their additional thoughts underneath an existing comment.

This is a good idea and would help prevent threads from going off topic.

As I mentioned above when premium frost came about one of the things they mentioned was an edit feature, it was a good hook as they know so many people wanted it but it's still not made an appearance years later.

I wonder if we'll ever get an update from MNHQ on the edit feature.

But, overall, I'd prefer fewer options tbh, not more, can do without quoting and gifs and non-MN emojis.

I agree with you about GIFS, they add nothing to the discussion and take up a lot of space on a thread. However, whilst I don't think we need to add all the bells and whistles, basic features like quoting, emojis and editing have been around on forums for years and it's unusual for a forum to not have them.

I would hate that. If you want to follow a thread you can't keep.track of new comments if they are nested like that. It was shit when the Guardian moved to that style about 10 years ago and it would be shit if MN did it now.

Beenhereforever1978 · 03/08/2023 13:59

Some kind of signal that a thread had suddenly turned in a whole other direction. The amount of people who don't RTFT and then barge in on a discussion (for example) that started with a poorly kitten, bet after ten pages turns into a suspected murder next-door drives me nuts.

mybenot · 03/08/2023 14:02

Hide poster function. I would pay extra for that.

One particular vacant person who lives in Site Stuff, but occasionally spills out into the active threads. All fake-posh and bad SPAG.

Groutyonehereagain · 03/08/2023 14:03

Definitely an edit facility. It’s beyond tedious when auto correct changes your post and you only notice after posting.

A like button would also be good.

UsingChangeofName · 03/08/2023 14:31

Another here who would appreciate a "like" button when another poster has put a great post.

Not only does it clog up the thread, quoting them and saying "great post" , it also seems a bit like 'fawning' sometimes, so I do that less often than in my head I think that.

Whinge · 03/08/2023 15:45

You would think MNHQ would be interested in offering feature that users are willing to pay for, but I guess the edit button has shown that money doesn't talk.

Yes there seems to be quite a lot of threads where a poster says something a lot of others agree with, and because there's no way to acknowledge that you like and agree with the post, lots of posters end up quoting it just to say that. Other forums seem to manage to keep discussions going even with like buttons, or a way to agree with posts, so i'm not sure why some posters think it would stop people from replying.

SaleOfTwoTitties · 03/08/2023 15:55

I'd like to be able to press a button that makes a poster disappear and unable to comment for two weeks.

I realise that could backfire 😂

You can actually do this yourself if necessary.

Do the See All on the OP, and then change the username to the one you want to filter on.

SouthCountryGirl · 03/08/2023 16:07

Go to first unread post and everything else that has been mentioned pretty much!

That's really helpful, especially as MN have this as a premium perk.

Its super tedious isn't it! I honestly don't get the reluctance. I've used several other forums with the feature and the oft mentioned negative of it being abused to change the thread etc has literally never happened. Not once in all the time I've used the forums, people genuinely only really use it 99% of the time to correct mistakes or clarify a point.

As MNHQ themselves have said in the past it will be a feature albeit they intended it as a carrot to cultivate payments for premium, I don't see how we end up with features no one asked for like the similar threads box or the my feed page which no one ever asked for over it.

MrsMoastyToasty · 03/08/2023 18:49

A function that takes me to the point where I commented on someone else's post, so that I don't have to scroll through loads of pages to read comments made after mine.

Calistano · 03/08/2023 18:50

Please the ignore poster one. Dedicated derailers would cry. I also would like the much maligned like button, would surely stop the "stop the cheque" moments.

Change name should be allowed, but have a cool down, would lessen sock puppeting. Could be small for first name change and increase over time. It's an unusual feature in the first place tbh.

SpongeBob2022 · 03/08/2023 18:52

A 'like' function. They have this on Babycentre so you get a much better feel for what the general consensus is on a topic or an aibu etc.

Ability to edit.

Calistano · 03/08/2023 18:52

What is even the point of the my feed thing? Really weird.
